In .the particular embodimentl of ,the invention which we ,have selected for illustration, the door 'is `,provided with ,angordinary lock `of )the latcll bolt type, having a Afixed outer knob, and Whichthe latch ,bolt `is :adapted to Abe retracted from the outside by `,one or .more Akeys of .a :suit-able pin 'tumbler mechanism. It will thus .be .seennthat when the ldoo-ris ilocked, the .possessor of ,the emergency key may readily open it by pushing Sback lt'he latch bolt through the movable member associated with the strike, so that the bolt moves out of cooperation with the strike, and thereby access to the room can be gained, in case of emergency or accident. When the movable part of the strike is again released to its normalposition, the lock on the door -will act in the usual way. The featuresV spoken of above are not lessential in all as-Y pects of the invention, but they are mentioned to facilitate an understanding of the following description of the particular construction illustrated.

The lock C is illustrated as of the mortise type, but this is unessential. It has a latch bolt 20, adapted to be retracted by one or more keys iitted to a pin tumbler cylinder lock 2l, located in the usual manner on Ythe outer face of the door.
4 25 of the door frame is a U-shaped bracket 26, secured to the stud by means of screws 27a. This bracket 2G forms a support or carrier for'the auxiliary lock E which isf strike. This sleeve and the opening in the fit-ted within the intermediate part of the bracket, as shown in Figs. 4: and 5, and suitably secured to the bracket in such a position as to lie wholly within the notch, or other cutaway part in the stud. At its lower part, the bracket is provided with an extension 27 which may extend completely across the notch in the stud, as shown, and which serves as a carrier for the movable latch-operating member F. Preferably, the latchoperating member F is ofthe pivoted type,
being pivoted or swiveled to the extension 27 by means of the pivo-t pin 2S at a point below the auxiliary lock E. The lock E is provided with a bolt 29, which carries a depending pin 30, extending out of the lock case through a. slot 31 in the bottom thereof, and engaging an opening or socket 32,
. formed in the pivot member or arm F intermediate of the ends thereof. Thus, the movable member F being pivoted to the bracket at 28, and being operatively connected with the bolt 29 will assume an inoperative position with respect to the latch bolt 20, when the bolt 29 is in the position shown in Fig. 5, and will push the latch bolt clear of the strike D when the bolt 29 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 6. In other words, the bolt 29 of the auxiliary lock is adapted to hold the member F in an inoperative position with respect to the latch bolt, so that the latch bolt may take into the strike in the usual way; but when said bolt 29is`moved forward by its key 33, termed the emergency key, the member F will push f the latch back from the locking position shown in Fig. 2 to the unlocking position -shown in Fig. 3, so that the door may be opened from the outside merely by pushing` on the same.
The auxiliary lock E, as previously stated, is located within the notch in the stud, so that when the covering or casing members of the door frame are applied, it will be securely housed in the interior of the casing. In some cases, however, the emergency lock might be applied to the exterior of the casing. The outer casing member is shown at 34:, thD inner casing member at 35, and the intermediate casing member at 36, said last named casing member being provided with the usual stop bead 37. Preferably, the lower and upper ends of the U-shaped bracket 26 will be mortised in the outer face of the stud and secured thereto, so that the outer casing member 34 may then be applied in the usual manner.
By preference, the movable latch-operating member F will act on the latch bolt through the intermediary of a sliding pluny ger mounted in the pocket or box of the strike D. ln the form shown, a hole is boi-ed through the box part of the strike, andextending rearwardly from said hole or bore is a sleeve 38, suitably secured to the khead,'and permit said bolt to engage the strike 1n the usual way. It will be obvious,
moreover, that the head l-O limits the movement of the plunger in a rearward direction, that is, away from the head of the latch bolt. Movement of the plunger in an opposite direction is limited by a similar head 40? on the rear end thereof, adapted to abut th-e sleeve 38. A screw -llpasses completely i i through the plunger 4:0 and contacts at its rear end 41a with a flat coperating portion Y 4l of the actuating member F. rlhe screw 41 is provided with a nicked head, accessible 'from the face of the strike, so that by screwing it in orvout the throw of the plunger relative to the latch bolt may be suitably adj usted to a certain extent, as will be obvious.
A keyhole 42 for the auxiliary lock E passes through the outside casing member 34, and preferably a small escutcheon 42a will be applied to said casing member around the keyhole. When the emergency key 33 is introduced into the lock E and turned in the proper direction, it releases a plurality of tumblers 43 from engagement with the stump or fence 44 on the bolt 29, and moves said bolt forward in its casing, with the result that the member F will move Vthe plunger 39 forward, so that the latch Ybolt will be pressed back clear of the strike. The bolt 29 is normally held in its rearward position, corresponding to the inoperative position of the latch-actuating member F, by means of a spring 45. As the bolt 29 is moved forward, the stump or fence 44 passes into notches 46 of Vthe tumbler gatings, and immediately upon the release of the key 33, the bolt will spring back to its initial position, thereby returning the member F to the inoperative position, correspondinof to lthe locking position of the door. rlhe emergency key is preferably of the drill` pin type, as shown, and the key bit is prevented from making a full rotation in the keyhole by abutting a shoulder 47 on the bolt, so that the key cannot be turned to a position in which the bolt 29 is jammed back to hold the latch bolt out of the strike.
In Fig. 8, we have shown a key 48 adapted to the cylinder lock 21, and intended for use as a change key, or guest key. Thisv particular key is, of course, of an absolutely different type from the emergency key 33, but the diiference of type is not important so long as each key retains its own particular function. We have not shown an additional key or keys for the lock on the door, such for example, as a maids master key,
Ybut such additional key or keys will obviously be provided if desired.
The operation of the vimproved lock mechanism will be obvious for the most part from the foregoing description. Un-
der ordinary conditions, the strike actsv in the customary manner, the plunger 39 and the arm FV lying in the inoperative position shown in Fig. 2. Obviously, the latch bolt cannot be pressed back out of cooperation with the strike when the bolt member 29 is deadlocked by the tumblers 43 in the position shown in Fig. 5. Supposing, now, that the door ofthe hotel room is locked, with the guest inside, and the proprietor needs to gain access to the room, as in case of accident or emergency, he can immediately open the door by means of the emergency'key 33, even if thekey mechanism on the door has been deadlocked from the inside of the 'room (e. g., by a thumbV turn 22a),in vsuch a manner as to make the change, and other keys, inoperative on the latch .bolt from the outside. By simply inserting the emergency key into the keyhole in the casing, and giving it a slight turn,
.the latch bolt is pushed back out of engagement with the strike by means of the plunger 39, and the door can be opened at once by merely pushing on the same. On releasing spring 45, acting on the bolt 29,\will immediately carry the member F back toits initial position, so that when the door is again closed the latch bolt can readily push back the plunger `into an inoperative position, and can enter in the opening in the strike in the usual manner, wherebythe door Iis again locked. By our invention, both the lock on the door and the lock on the door frame can `be made lin the simplest form; thus in most cases the two locks can be produced at a cost not appreciably greater than the cost of a single lock providing all o-f their combined functions. The security factor isf very largely increased, because the emergency key has its own group of tumblers, to which it can be specially adapted in order to avoid all liability of picking the emergency lock, and because the simplicity of the lock on the door, and the relatively small numbers of keys adapted to said lock, tend to security and safety.
We have not attempted to illustrate and describe the various modifications in the details of the construction which may` be adopted within the scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
We do not claim broadly herein the combination of a lock on the door for locking,
the latter tothe frame, a key for operating said lock from the outsidel of the door, means for preventing the operation of' said lock by said key, a second key, and means on the door frame operable by said second key for releasing the door from the frame when said preventingmeans'is in operative condition, asV claimed in our application, Serial No. 877 37 5, nor do we claim other 'features broadly claimed in that application.

The combination With a door and door frame, of a lock on the door having a latch bolt, a strike plate fixed to said frame to receive said latch bolt, said frame having a keyhole therein, a key insertible into said keyhole, and means operative by said key for pushing said bolt clear'of said strike plate; substantially as described.

The combination With a door and door frame, of a lock on the door having a latch bolt, a strike plate on the iframe to receive said latch bolt, a change key operating in a keyhole in the door for retractingsaid latch bolt, a tumbler controlled member ,on the door frame for pushing said latch bolt out of the strike, and an emeroency key for operating said tumbler controlled member; substantially as described. The combination With a door and door frame, of a lock on the door having a latch bolt, key mechanism associated With said lock for retracting said latch bolt, a `strike on the door frame to receive said bolt, alock mounted on the frame and comprising a case, a bolt therein, and a tumbler for said bolt, a key to cooperate With said tumbler and actu` ate said last-named bolt, said key operating in a keyhole on the door frame, a lever connected with the bolt of said second lock to be shifted thereby, and means interposed between said lever and the latch bolt for pushing the latter out of the strike by the rotation of said key; substantially as described.

The combination With a door and door frame, of a lock on the door having a bolt, a strike or keeper on the frame to receive said bolt, a change key for withdrawing said bolt from said strike, said change key operating in a keyhole in the door, means for preventing the retraction of said bolt by means of said key, an emergency key, and means on the door frame operative by said emergency key for retracting saidbolt from said strike or keeper When said preventing means is in operative condition; substantially as described.
9. The combination with a door and door frame, of a lock on the door having a bolt,
a strike or keeper on the door frame to receive said bolt, a change key for retracting said bolt from said strike, said change key operating in a keyhole at the outside of the door, means for preventing the retraction of said bolt by said change key, an emergency key, a tumbler controlled member on the door frame operative by said emergency key, and means operative by said tumbler controlled member for moving said bolt out of the strike when said preventing means is in operative condition; substantially as described.

The combination with a door and door frame, of a lock on theA door having a bolt, a strike or keeper fixed to the frame for receiv ing said bolt, a change key for retracting said bolt from said strike or keeper, an emergency key insertiblein a keyhole in the door frame, a tumbler controlled bolt operative by said emergency key and housed Within the door frame, and a plunger for pushing said first-named bolt out of the strike or keeper operative by said tumbler controlled bolt; substantially as described.

The combination with a door and door casing, of a lock on the door having a latch bolt, a strike on the door casing to receive saidy latch bolt, a change key insertible in a keyhole on the door for rctracting said latch bolt, a lock mortised in the door casing adjacent said strike, and including a tumbler-controlled bolt, an emergency key insertible in a keyhole in the door casing .tor operating said tumbler-controlled bolt, a member connected With said ltumbler-controlled bolt to be shifted thereby, and a plunger in the strike for pushing the latch bolt out of the strike, adapted to be operated by said last-named member; substantially as described.

The combination With a door and door frame, of a lock on the door having a bolt, a strike or keeper fixed to the frame for receiving said bolt, a change key for retracting said bolt from said strike or keeper, an emergency key insertible in a keyhole in the door frame, a tumbler controlled bolt operative by said emergency key and houses Within the door frame, and a plunger for pushing said first-named bolt out of the strike or keeper operative by said tumbler controlled bolt, said plunger adjustable with respect to the bolt on the door; substantially as described.
13. r1`he combination With a door and door casing, of a lock on the door having a latch bolt, a strike on the door casing to receive said latch bolt, al change key insertible in a keyhole on the door for retracting said latch bolt, a lock mortised in the door casing adjacent said strike, and including a tumbler-controlled bolt, an emergency key insertible in a keyhole in the door casing for operating said tumbler-controlled bolt, a member conbolt-actuating membercoperating with saidl strike and lock, and connected With said lock to be shifted thereby; substantially as described.
15. An emergency attachment for locks, comprising a strike, a movable bolt-actuating member cooperating with said strike', a
lock operatively connected With said member, and a key for operating said lock; substantially as described.
16. An emergency attachment for locks, comprising a strike or keeper, a bolt-actuat ing plunger movable through said strike or keeper, a lock operatively connected With said plunger to move the same, and a key for operating said lock; substantially as described.
17. The combination With a doorhaving a latch bolt thereon, of a door frame having a notch therein, a lock mounted in said notch, casing members inclosing said lock, a key insertible into said lock through one of said casing members to actuate said lock, a
strike or keeper on the `doorframe to receive said latch bolt, and a member mounted in said strike or keeper and shiftable by the operationof said lock to push said bolt out of said strike or keeper substantially'as described. y

The combination With a door and door frame, of a bolt on the door for locking'the latter to the frame, a change key for operating said bolt from the outside of the door, means operable from the inside of the door for preventing the retraction of the bolt by means of said change key, an emergency key, and means on the door frame, operable by said emergency key, for pushing said bolt out of locking position with respect to said frame; substantially as described.

The combination with a door and door frame, of a lock on the door having a bolt, a strike on the frame adapted to be engaged by said bolt, a change key for operating said bolt from the outside of the door, means op-` erable from thev inside of the door for preventing the retraction of said bolt by said change key, anemergency key, and means on casing, a key for actuatingsaid lock, and means operable bysaid lock for pushing said bolt back into `an vinoperative position, said means adjustable inits throw, substantially asdescribed. v

The combination with a door and door frame, of a lock on the door having a bolt, a strike plate fixed on the frame to receive the bolt, a change key lto operate said bolt, an emergency key, and an emergency mechanism on the door frame, operable from the outside of the doorby said emergency key for withdrawing said bolt from said strike plate.
25. The combination With a door and door frame, of a bolt on the door, a keeper on the frame to receive said bolt, and tumbler controlled means operable from the outside of the door and located on the door frame for moving said bolt out of said keeper.

The combination With a door and door frame, of a bolt on the door, a keeper on the frame to receive said bolt, a change key operable in a key hole on the door for actuating said bolt, tumbler-controlled emergency mechanism mounted on the door frame for moving said bolt out of said keeper, and an emergency key operating in a key hole on the door frame at the outside of the room `for actuating said emergencymechanism.
