Sunr- TINGER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Two Rivers, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swinging-Sash Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for holding storm or screen sashes, or other pivotally mounted members at a desired variable inclination as to the window frame or other support.

A common inconvenience encountered in adjustable holding means of this nature heretofore provided is that when the swinging sash is held at only a slight angle to the window frame, the holding arms of the sash project inwardly of the path of movement of the sliding sashes of the window, to 'prevent closing the sliding sash without first manipulating the holding means. It is therefore primarily the object of my invention to provide a means whereby the swinging sash may be helcl in various desired positions without affecting the freedom of movement of the sliding` sash of the frame.

A further object resides in the provision of a sash holding device having its parts arranged for interchangeable association whereby the device may be disposed at either the right or left hand side of the window frame.

With the above and other` objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, arrangement and formation of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevational view of my improved sash holding device associated with a window frame and a swinging sash member.

Fig. 2 is a detail view showing my device arranged for holding the swinging sash in an intermediate position.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the keeper member and adjacent portion of the holding arm of my device.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates a window frame, having the usual sash retaining strip 6 secured to one side thereof, and 7 designates a swinging sash associated with the free end directed laterally to form. a finger piece 14, and which is provided in its top and bottom edges immediately inwardly of' thefinger piece with recesses 15, each adapted to receive an edge portion of the slot 10 of the keeper plate. It is noted that the width of the holding arm Sections is greater than the width of the reduced portion of the slot 10, whereby the holding arm is normally retained against lateral displacement from the keeper slot, and to facilitate engagement and disengagement of the arm and keeper plate when desired, the intermediate portion of the arm section 13 is cut away at 16. The pivotal connection of the arm sections comprises a bolt 17 passed through the adjacent ends of the Sections, and the end of the section 12 is reduced to form consequent upper and lower shoulders 18, while the end of the section 13 is provided with an outwardly offset projeetion 19 adapted to abut the uppermost shoulder 18 to limit downward pivotal movement of the ends of the sections. The lower shoulder 18 is adapted to abuttingly engage the lower edge of the slot 15 to hold the swinging sash 7 in an intermediate position, it being noted that the reduction of the end of the arm section 12 forms a recess in conjunction with the adj acent edge of the section 13.

By thus hinging the holding arm adj acent its intermediate keeper engaging portion, the free end of the arm may swing downwardly when not in use, as shown in Fig. 2, to permit free movement of the sliding sash 8, and it will be appreciated that any number of hinged sections and intermediate keeper engaging portions may be provided as desired.

By the provision of recesses 15 in both edges of the arm section 13, and by the provision of a pair of shoulders 18, both the right and left hand holding arms may be stamped by a single die, and the finger piece 14k and the end of the stop projection 19 may be Subsequently bent in either desired direction.

What is claimed is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a Section adapted for pivotal Securement to a Swinging saSh member and having one end reduoed to define consequent Shoulders, a Second Section pivoted to said end of the first Section, a projection on the Second section engaging one of the Shoulders to provide a limit of movement, and a keeper member for receiving the Sections, the other shoulder of the firSt section forming a recess with the second Section When partly folded and engaging Said keeper member Substantially as desoribed.

2. A device of the Character described comprising a Section adapted for pivotal securement to a swinging Sash member and having one end reduced to define consequent Shoulders, a second section pivoted to said end of the first section and provided With receSseS in its free end, a keeper member provided With a slot for receiving the sections, Said keeper engaging said receSSeS when the Sash member is in full extended position, and a. projection on the Second sec tion engaging one of the Shoulders to provide a limit of movement, Said othei` shoulder forming a receSS in conjunction With the Second section and adapted for engagement With Said keeper Whereby the sivinging saSh may be held in partly open position Without afizecting the freedom of movement of the Sliding,` SaSh of the frame to which the device iS attached substantially as described.
