ADJUSTABLE WRENCH.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDERS FEDER JENsEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at-Norrkping, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention refers to an adjustable wrench of the kind in which the movable jaw of the wrench is actuated by means of an eccentric device pivoted to the movable jaw and coperating with lugs on the shank of the rigid jaw.
The object of the invention is to provide an adjustable wrench of the said kind in which there is no lost motion and which may be rapidly and easily adjusted by a single manipulation and be securely tightened around nuts of very different sizes, besides which the wrench needs not be removed from the nut in order to be turned around the same, but when turned back the wrench automatically releases the nut and when turned forward it again automatically grips the nut. The present wrench is also arranged in such manner that it may lbe taken apart and assembled without having to detach or to secure any connecting part, that is to say that the taking apart and the assembling are simply effected by separating the parts from one another, or by arranging the parts in each other.
The invention is chiefly characterized by this that the eccentric is arranged on a handle pivoted to the movable jaw in such manner that the handle is movable in the plane of the shank and the jaws, so that the force to be exerted for turning the handle and closing the jaws will lie in the 'same plane as the force exerted for turning the wrench. The pivot pin of the handle in the movable jaw may suitably be on the same side of the shank of the rigid jaw as the working surface of the movable jaw, while the handle extends to the other side of the shank, by which it is attained that the force exerted on the movable jaw, becomes directed as nearly as possible at right angles to the working surfaces of the jaws and through the axis of the nut engaged by the jaws.
The accompanying drawing illustrates an embodiment of the present wrench, viewed from the side and partly in section in Figure l, and edgewise in Fig. 2.

The movable jaw 3 may slide along theV shank 2 and may be connected with the .shank by means of a sleeve 5 embracing the shank and secured to the jaw 3 by means of rivets fl. A handle 6 is rotatably connected with the movable jaw 3, which handle embraces the shank with two parallel lateral projections 7 which extend over the shank 2 and are connected on the side of the shank opposite the handle 6 by means of a pin 8 loosely introduced in a slot 9 in the movable jaw 3. The handle 6 is thus rotatably connected with the movable jaw 3 and at the same time securely held in its appointed position.
On both sides of the shank 2 there is a number of parallel notches l0 arranged above each otherin the longitudinal direction of the shank, and each of the lateral projections 7 on the rotatable handle 6 is provided with an edge ll eccentric in relation to the axis 8 of rotation of the handle. As will be seen from Fig. 2, the edges l1 of the projections 7 are bent inward against the shank 2 so that they will securely engage the notches 10.
The described adjustable wrench is used in the following manner: When the jaws l, 3 are to be adjusted for instance for a nut l2, the handle 6 is turned outward from the shank 2, until the eccentric edges ll leave, that is to say, become free from the notches l0. Only in this position of the handle 6 can the same and the movable jaw 3 be freely moved along the shank 2, such free movement being impossible while the said edges 1l engage the notches l0 (see Fig. 2). rlhe jaw 3 is then moved to a position which about corresponds to the size of the nut, and the wrench having been placed on the nut, the handle 6 is forced toward the shank 2. The eccentric edges 1l then enter the two nearest notches l0 and force the movable jaw against the nut, which is thus seized between the jaws. When a nut is to be drawn very tight, the force exerted on the handle 6 becomes correspondingly greater, and thus also the grip around the nut more powerful in a corresponding degree.
