IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,404, dated February 6, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Horseshoe, invented by THOMAS KING- HORN and ROBERT KINGHORN, of Morgan, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio.
Our invention consists of a horseshoe with joints about half-way between the heel and toe, and India rubber springs arranged to force the heels outward when attached to expand feet contracted at the heel.
Figure l is a plan of the bottom of our improved shoe and sponge-holder, and Fig. 2 is a section of the shoe on the line w .r of Fig. 1.

The two sides of the horseshoe are jointed at B so as to approach to or recede from each other at the heel, and provided with projections 0, having cavities adapted for holdinga spring, D, on each side, in such manner that, being contracted by moving the heels toward each other when the shoe is attached to the foot, will constantly tend to spread the foot at the heel by their action thereon, as will be clearly understood by inspection of the drawing. The projections O are so placed on the inner side of the bar forming the shoe as not to rise so high or extend so low as to interfere in any way with the wearing of the shoe. The sponge-holder consists of the piece of leather E, formed mainly in outline like the inner lining of the shoe, but a little larger, with a depression at F for the frog, and provided with the metal clips G, having an upper prong, I, and a lower one, H, which engage the inner edge of the shoe above and below, as shown, to hold the said piece E in position, one of said clips being near each heel, and another at the toe. The leather is sprung, to contract it when being introduced, and the clips are engaged with the shoe.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the springs D and lugs b, with the jointed shoe, substantially as speciiied.
