To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that l, Jonn l'lIUKi a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Calgary, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in GasBurners, of which the following is u flyecification.
I This invention relates to certain imprm'ements on my former epplicz-ition allowed January 9, 1917 and bearing Serial Noni ber 58,288. It is the object of this invention to provide a burner of the vertical type, primarily intended for use with gas furnaces, and which is exceedingly simple in construction and con'ipact, producing a heat of great intensity consistent with the consun'iption of a minimum amount of fuel.

A supply pipe 16 communicates with the hollow annulus, preferably having one extremity threaded through a boss 17 and the wall. of the body 10, this extremity of the pipe being also threaded into the outer wall of the annulus 1 L Supported by the body 10 at a suitable point in its circumference, is a set screw 18 which bears against the annulus ll and cooperates with the pipe 16 in supporting the annulus within the body 10. Depending from the lower edge of the body is a set screw 19 which supports a swingingly mounted shutter 20 which controls the admittance of air into the tube from the lower extremity thereof, the shutter being disposed to swing across this lower open end of the tube as shown.
Projecting inwardly from the inner wall oi the annulus at an appropriate point in its circumference, and also adjacent the lower end thereof, is horizontally disposed pipe 21 communicating; with the space between the concentrically .isposed walls of the annulus, and terminating to provide a vertically disposed portion 22. Detachably associated with the Vertical portion 22 of the pipe is a perforated cup 23, the perforations of which are disposed at an angle so that the stregnns of gas from these perforations will be directed upwardly and outwardly in a diagonal course, to strike against the inner wall of the annulus l-l.
In practice the valve 24 in the supply pipe 16 is open, and the gas passes therefrom into the hollow annulus 14, a portion of thisg'as passing therefrom through the openings 15 adjacent the upper 'edgeof the annulus, while a portion of the gas passes through the pipe 21, from which it passes in streams through the perforations of the cup 23, and directed in the manner above s :ated against the inner wall of the annulus.- lhe rush of gas through the hollow body 10 draws the air through the lower openend of the body to mix with the ingoing streams of gas to form a perfect combustible mixture It will be noted from the-disclosure that the streams of gestlxpzissing from the perforated cap 453 takes the-air with it, these streams striking the inner wall of the annulusapproximately one-fourth of an inch below the openings 15. The streams of gas and air from the perforated cap rebound from theinner wall of the annulus toward the center of the body 10, and smashes itself into a fine comlmstiblc mixture. Before this are can separate, it is taken up by the rotary motion of the gas passing into the body 19 through the openings 15 which are tangentially disposed with respect to the axis of the body for this purpose. The air and gas are thus held together while passing through the body 10 in a whirling motion to the point of ignition, thus making the most perfect combustible mixture 0btainable and producing a great heat intensity. it is manifest, that by reason of the construction and contemplated operation, that the burner at all times is completely filled, the result being the provision of a better flame and more speed than is obtainable in burners of this character.
In Fig. 2 1 have disclosed a modified form of the invention, which differs from the preferred form only in the respect that the air tube and mixing chamber is made up of the sections 25 and 26 respectively, which are slid together and held fixed relatively in any suitable manner, preferably by means of the threaded element 27. In this instance the'hollow annulus 28 is slightly wider than the space between the sections 25 and 26 at the point where these sectionsovcrlap, so
that the annulus forms a support for the,
section of thtg air tube and mixing chamber. The scetilgin 2-6 has integrally formed therewith a supporting leg 29, although this maybe separable, and detachably secured to the section 26 in the manner hereinabove described for connecting the leg' 12 to the body 10. In other respects this form of the invention, and the principle of operation is exactly the same as that bereinabove described in connection. with the preferred form of the invention. I
\Vhile l have shown and described what I consider the best forms of the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to this precise construction and arrangement of parts, :md that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
lVhat is claimed is i- 1. A gas burner comprising a hollow body open at bothends and constituting an air tube and mixing chamber, means for supporting said tube vertically, a hollow annulus fitted within said tube adjacent its lower end, said annulus having a circumferential series of openings adjacent the upper edge thereof, a gas supply pipe connected with said annulus, a valve in said pipe, a second pipe supported by the annulus and establishing connnunication between the annulus and said'tube, a perforated 'cap associated with said second mentioned pipe, and a valve for controlling the opening at one end of the tube.
2. A gas burner comprising a hollow body open at both ends and constituting an air tube and mixing chamber, means for supportingsaid tube vertically, a hollow an nnlus removably fitted within the tube adjacent its lower end, a gas supply pipe connected with said tube, means carried by'the tube and bearing against the annulus for supporting the annulus in said tube, said annulus having a circumferential series of openings, a second pipe supported by the.
annulus and establishing communication thercbetween and said tube, a perforated cap associated with the second mentioned pipe, and a valve for controlling the opening at one end of the tube.
A gas burner comprising a hollow body open at both ends and. constituting an air tube and mixing chamber, means for supporting said tube vertically, a hollow annnlus fitted within said tube adjacent its lower end, said annulus having a circumferential series of openings adjacent the upper edge thereof, a gas supply pipe connected with said annulus, a valve in said ,pipe, :1 /sccond pipe projecting horizontally from said annulus and having a vertically disposed portion, a perforated cap associated with said vertically disposed. portion with the perforations arranged to direct the streams of gas in said. pipe against the annulus below said openings therein, and a valf le for controlling the opening at one end of the tube.
