Description

Y which is ANNA SCI-IOLLENBRUCH, OF DUSSELDORF, GERMANY.
METHOD OF IMPROVING COKE AS FUEL FOR STOVES, HEARTHS, AND THE LIKE BY FILLING UP THE PORES THEREOF.

No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA SoHoLLEN- enner-r, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing in Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Method of Improving Coke as Fuel for Stoves, Hearths, and the like by Filling Up the Pores Thereof, of which the following is a statement.
The use of coke as a fuel in households meets With difficulties in so far as it develops its heating power too quickly and therefore produces a too intense heat, so that the stoves and hearths suffer therefrom and are soon destroyed thereby, in particular because a coke fire cannot be regulated or damped the same as a coal fire by closing the air supply as it requires a more ample supply of air, or would otherwise go out. Owing to the rapid combustion such coke fire furthermore calls for a more frequent filling up and a tedious attendance, so that the, economic advantages which might be derived from burning coke are lost again. The present invention relates to a method by which coke may, in a cheap manner, be improved in such a way, that it will become almost equivalent to mineral coal as regards its effect.
The method forming the subject of the present invention is as follows: The coke, preferably prepared of a medium or small size, is introduced into a liquid mass, which contains, mixed in water a mix ture of about 30 parts of loam. This mass is well stirred with the coal and is absorbed greedily by the highly porous coke, so that all pores thereof are filled with the mixture of coal and loam.
According to its size the coke is left from 12 to 24 hours in this bath, and
after it has been removed therefrom, it is treated with a mass, likewise composed of coal dust, loam and water, but is lessliquid than the said bath. The coal dust and loam may be employed in equal parts, and ma be mixed to a thick paste with the thick sediment of the previously used bath. Into this paste the coke is stirred with a shovel or by aid of a revolving drum until the mass has formed a complete coat on the coke.
Specification of Letters Patent.
parts of coal dust and 20' Thereupon the lumps of coke, after they have dried slightly, are preferably powdered with pure coal dust, in order to improve their appearance. The coal dust introduced into the coke and the coating will serve as a substitute for the fuel substances which have been removed from the coke, while the loam or some other non-combustible earth will prevent a too rapid combustion. If coal dust alone were to be used for filling up the pores and coating the coke, the latter would retain to the greater part its unfavorable properties which render it purpose stated.
he drying process is preferably performed in open, Warm air. Great heat should not be employed.
By the hereinbefore described treatment the coke will attain approximately the properties of mineral coal, it will burn slowly and produce a clean, sootless fire, which may also be treated the same as a coal fire. Nevertheless the fuel thus obtained has the advantage of being cheap. By the said treatment the coke will, furthermore, lose its property of crackling which is very annoying with a coke fire.
The new fuel obtained according to the present invention is very cheap, as the pro duction of coke is steadily increasing with the increasing production of gas products, and coke may be had at a comparatively cheap price, while .the ingreclients for the mixture, coal dust and loam, are almost worthless.
