I To all whom it may concern f Be it known that I, MEREDITH G. STAND- LEY, a citizen of the United States, and 1esiding at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State'of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Stamps, of which the following specification is a full disclosure. Y
This invention relates to a hand stamp embodying the general principles ofconstruction andy operation disclosed and claimed in the application of myself and Charles W. Gosnell, filed June 13, 1913, Serial No. 773,455, allowed May 17, 1916.
The object of the present invention relates to the structural improvement on or modification of the structural organization disclosed in said prior application, and more particularly in relation to an improved lmounting and arrangement of the record strip and inking ribbon rolls relative to one another and to the printing wheel. The operating mechanism may be of the character indicatedin said prior application, but it is not a portion of the invention herein to be disclosed.
The features of the invention will be more fully disclosedin the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view.

rlhe stamp is rectangular, of a convenient size to carry inthe pocket and consists of an inclosed housing body 1 and a platen plate 2 hinged thereto. The housing body 1 comprises a skeleton frame 3 havmg the upper shelves 4 slightly spaced from the top plate 5. The housing body is closed by means of a separable bottom plate 6 hinged relative to the 'skeleton frame and preferably the platen and said bottom plate are concentrically hinged relative to the skeleton frame by means of the hinge members 8, 9. The relative movement of the body and platen is spring controlled by means of the spring 10. The printing wheels 11 are rotatably mounted in the skeleton frame, the upper periphery portion-,passing between the ends of the shelf members 4 and the diametrically lower portion of said wheels passin through an aperture 13 in 'said bottom p ate 6. The wheels are operated by means of rack bars 14, slidably held between a shell:` member 4 and the top plate 5, and having knobs 15 projecting through slots 16 for operating the wheels, said rack bars having indicating characters on their upper surfaces, which are exposed, for indi;

On the bottom plate is a pair of pillow blocks 18, 18' in which are rotatable spools or journals 19, 19', for the inking ribbon 20. From the opposing portions of said pillow blocks 18, 18', are projected bearing brackets 21, 21', carrying spindles or trunnions 22, 22', for the record strip 23. Preferably the lug 24 is formed on the interior surface of the bottom xplate adjacent the aperture 13 for guiding the record strip to contact with the 'printing wheels. When the housing body is closed the printing wheels lie immediately between the` record strip journals, and the inking roll journals are outermost and the axes of these five members` are substantially along the medial plane of the housing body. 0f course, the under portion of the printing wheels project throughaperture 13 so as to be operatively projected in relation to the platen printing pad 25 on the platen plate 2. rlhe record strip passes tangentially over that portion of the wheels projecting through aperture 13, so that it Patented July 1t', 19017.

the printing characters are not brought into any direct contact with the inking surfaces, and the printing wheels can be freely rotated. The inking ribbon passes through apertures 28, 29, of the bottom plate and contactually passes over the record strip only at the place where the record strip contacts the-printing character in the printing position. The record strip is transpicuous, that is,.the record is readable by reading through the strip. The swinging end of the bottom plate may be normally secured to the end piece of the skeleton frame by a latch 30, thus completely inclosing the housinbody.
y this construction and arrangement the wheels may be kept entirely clean and oiled, readily renewed or readjusted, because when the bottom plate is separated from the skeleton frame or top portion of the housing body yall the record strip supports and inking ribbon supports, as well as the record strip and inking ribbon, of course, are completelyseparated from the printing wheels asA ica j iio I and their setting mechanism. Also, the fact of carrying these printing strip and inking ribbon supports both on this separable bottom plate enables very convenient access to thel stri and ribbon for renewal, or any other dresired purpose without any disturbance of the printing wheels.
In short, the structure and arrangement herein disclosed constitutes a greatly improved and more convenient embodiment of the invention than the .specific form disclosed in said prior application and I only claim the inventionherein as a different species of said prior invention.
Having described my invention, I claim: A stamp comprising a coacting housing body'and platen, the housing body comprisa printing wheel frame, and a separable bottom plate for said frame coextensively adjacent the platen,
