Be it known that I, GEORGE P. Ear-mun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Belt-Hole Guards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The inventlon is an improvement in the covers, casings, or curbs, known sometimes as belt-hole guards, which are applied to the floors of buildings inconnection with holes through which driving belts or bands of machinery stretch from one story to. another above or below, and which are designed to protect such holes and close them more or less completely while leaving passageway for the belts or bands. 3

The invention provides a belt-hole guard of novel construction having one or two cover-portions relatively adjustable so as to enable the lips of the opening or mouth occupicd by the belt oriband to" be spaced at the right distance apart. The adjustability provides for locating either or both of the said lips as close as may be desired to the belt or band. It provides for enabling the position of the lips and opening or mouth to be varied to suit that of the portion of belt or band which occupies the belt-hole and the said opening or mouth. I

The said embodiment comprises a shelllike body 1, a foot or flange 2, and opposite cover-

3, 3. The said cover-portions are mounted upon the body 1 at opposite sides of the position of the portion of belt or band a that stretches through the guard. The foot or flange 2 extends around the base of the body 1 and stands out therefrom, and is adapted to be placed upon or against the surface of the floor, wall, or casing in which is made the belt-hole that is to be covered and protected. The fastenings by which the guard is fixed in place will engage usually with the said foot or flange. The latter is furnished with

2, 2 to receive the said fastenings, which may be screws or bolts. The height of the body is to be suiiicient to meet the general requirements, as for instance to prevent water or dirt from the floor from entering the opening or mouth. of the guard, aswell as to prevent dirt from being swept upon the top of the guard and into the said opening or mouth. The two side-walls of the body which are parallel with the transverse surfaces of the belt are at a suitable distance from each other to allow for a reasonable range of variations in the relative position of the belt or band between them. The two cover-portions 3, 2-3, are connected with the upper part of the body adjacent the said two sidewalls, and project inward therefrom tmvard each other, with their rounded lips 3 3, approached more or less closely to the surfaces of the belt or band a. 5 or 5 at each end thereof. Each end-wing extends at an angle from the corresponding end of the coverportion, close alongside an end-wall of the body, and overlapping said end-wall.

The adjustability of the cover-portions is provided for by hinging the cover-portions to the body. The hinging is effected in the present instance by means of pivotal pins or pintles 6, 65, passing through the upper portion of the body at opposite sides of the opening or mouth for the belt or band, and also through holes in the end-wings of the cover-portions, as shown. The pivotal pins or pintles are held in placeby means of a head upon one end of each thereof outside the corresponding end-wing, and a washer 7 and cotter-pin 8 applied to the other end of each, outside of the corresponding endwing. The construction may if desired be varied in different minor respects, and other means of adjustment may'i'n some cases beemployed.

I claim as my invention 1. A belt-hole guard comprising a shellv like body through which a belt or band Copies of this patent may be obtained for passes, and a cover-portion provided with 'a lip constituting one side of an opening or mouth for the said belt or band, a pivotal mountingadapting the cover-portion to be swung to adjust the said lip toward or from the belt or band, and means for securing the cover-portion in adjusted position.

A belt-hole guard comprising a shelllike body through which a belt or band passes, opposite cover-portions each provided with a lip constituting one side of an opening or mouth for the said belt or band, pivotal mountings adapting the cover-portions respectively to be swung to adjust the said lipstoward or from each other and the belt or band, and to adjust the opening or mouth to one side orvthe other, and means for securing the cover-portions in adjusted position. v

A belt-hole guard comprising a shelllike body through which a belt or band passes, cover-portions provided with lips constituting opposite sides of an opening or mouth for the said belt or band, the said cover-portions provided with end-wings overlapping the ends of the body, pivotal mountings adapting the said cover-portions to be swung to adjust therespeetive lips toward or from the belt or band and each other and also so as to vary the position of the opening or mouth, and means engaging with end-wings for securing the cover-portions in adjusted position.

A belt-hole guard comprising a body portion through which a belt or band passes, a cover-portion provided with a lip constituting one side of an opening or mouth for the said belt or band and also provided with end-wings overlapping the ends of said body-portion, one of the overlapping parts having a. curved slot therein, a pivotal mounting adapting the cover-portion to be swung to adjust the said lip toward and from the belt or band, and a bolt working in said slot and serving to secure the coverportion in adjusted position.

6. A belt-hole guard comprising a bodyportion through which a belt or band passes, cover-portions provided with lips constitut- 'ing opposite sides of an openmgor mouth for the belt or band, and with end-wings overlapping the ends of the body-portion, pivotal mountings adapting the said cover portions to be swung to adjust the respective lips toward or from the belt or band and each other and also so as to vary the )osition of the opening or mouth, one o' the GEORGE P.
