null-1W 2 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO MUELLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR F ON E-I-IALF T0 WILLIAM DAVID HAMER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
WIRE CLAMP AND HANGER.
Application filed July 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTTO MUELLER, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Wire Clamps and Hang ers, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective wire clamp and hanger for holding and support-- ing wires, such as trolley wires, and the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device whereby the wire is held firmly between the clamping jaws, with means for tightening the jaws at any time after the device has been erected. And still another object, for convenience of construction, is the assemblage of the parts in a single entity to prevent disassociation of said parts and to contribute to the ease and celerity of installation.
Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a central transverse section of the clamp and hanger. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of one of the clamps.
In all the views the same reference characters are employed to indicate similar parts.
In the selected illustrative embodiment of my invention an insulating hanger 5 is provided with a base flange 6, having four arms 7, S, 9 and 10, by any two of which the device may be secured to any suitable support by means of screws or bolts taking through the notches 11 provided in each end of the respective arms. A petticoat, or metal shield 12, preferably an integral part with the base 6 contains a mass of insulating material 13, such as rubber or the like, in which is embedded a bolt 14 provided with a head 15 and screw threaded at its lower end, as at 16. The lower end of the bolt, or stud 14, is preferably squared, as at 17. The wire clamps, or jaws 18, are preferably stamped in a single piece from sheet metal and formed up, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4. Near the upper ends they are each provided with attaching ears 19 and 20, perforated as at 21. There are two such clamps, which are substantially duplicates of each Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 40,186.
other, for each device, one to be contained on each side of a trolley wire 22. For a trolley wire, of the character shown in the drawing in which there is a longitudinally entendmg groove, one on each side of a vertical plane, a bead 23 is formed on the inner surface of each ofthe clamps to enterthe grooves in the wire, as shown in Fig. 1. The conical portion 25 of the clamp carries the ears 19 and 20, is bent inwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, when the two clamps are hinged together, and to the bolt or stud 14, as by means of the rivet 26, they jointly form a substantial cone. A nut 27 has threaded engagement with the stud 14 and is conically counter bored, as at 28, the counter.
bore being of substantially the same taper as the cone provided by the parts 2525 of the clamp members. The clamp members 18-18 are substantial duplicates and are hinged to the squared end 17 of the stud 14; one of the ears 19 or 20 of each of the clamps being adjacent the stud and the other overlying the ear of the-companion clamp so that the ears 19 and 20, of each of the clamps, are the same distances apart. This facilitates and cheapens the construction of the clamp.
The parts are assembled, as shown in Fig. 2, and are thus sent to the work ready for installation.
Inasmuch as the clamps 18-18 are not rotatively secured to the stud 14, or to the hanger 6, the device may be secured in place by bolts or screws passing through the flanges 8 and 10, or it may be turned at an angle and the bolts or screws passed through the flanges 7 and 9, depending on the relative alinement of the trolley wires.
To apply the device, the nut 27 is screwed up on the stud 14 to a position near the petticoat 12 when the clamps 18 18 may be ap plied to the wire 22, after which the nut may be screwed down toward the clamps and until it engages the tapered portions 25 of the clamps whereby further movement of the nut, in the same direction, will force the clamps toward each other, and into solid engagement with the wire. In the event that the clamps should become loosened, incident to the severe usage to which they are subjected, the nut 27 may be screwed down farther upon the stud 14 and the clamps thereby tightened.
The clamping operation tends to hold the parts together, as the strain imposed upon them, by the operation of the nut '27 is to force them together and not to separate them. The nut 27 furthermore provides a canopy, or covering for the joints between the clamps and the lower ends of the stud 14, thereby protecting" these parts from the effect of weather.
hile I have herein shown a single embodiment of my invention for the purpose of clear disclosure it is manifest that I am not to be limited to the specific showing as departure may be made therefrom, without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
A trolley wire clamp and hanger comprising an insulated threaded stud; a pair of duplicate wire clamping jaws each having a flat body part with a longitudinal edge for engaging a trolley wire and a semi-conical projection on the opposite longitudinal edge with forked ends extending from the upper edges of the semi-conical projection to overlie the stud end for pivoted connection therewith; and a nut threaded on the stud above the jaws and provided with a taper counter-bore to engage the cone formed by the associated semi-conical projections on said jaws.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OTTO MUELLER. In the presence of Foniin BAIN, MARY F. ALLEN.
