SELF-PROPELLING BED-FAN.

To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SYLvEsTsR F. W11.- soN and AUGUST L. WAGNER, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Propelling Bed-Fans, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in self-propelling bed-fans; and the objects of our improvements are, to provide a fan which will operate automatically by the weight of the person using the bed; to suspend the spring of a bed within the frame of the bed by a cable, cord, chain, or other suitable means, so as to operate amechanism attached to the spring; to provide a suitable number of gears assembled in a frame which is attached to the spring of a bed so as to be put in motion by the weight of a person using the bed causing a rotation of the fan connected with the gearing; the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of our device.

The spring 1 of a bed is suspended within the bed frame 2 by a cable, cord, chain, or other suitable means 3 and 4, see Fig. 2. The cable 3 is secured to the bed frame as indicated at 5 at one end and the other end of the cable is secured to an operating pulley 6, the connection being indicated at 7. The cable at is secured to the bed frame at 8 and to the operating pulley 6 at 9. The small pulleys 10 and 11 are provided to prevent the bed spring from tipping, holdlng the spring in balanced horizontal position. The small pulleys 10 and 11 are turnably secured to the spring. The operating pulley 6 is secured to a shaft 12, longitudinally disposed below the spring and journaled in the sup porting plates 13 and 14:, which are secured to the bed spring. Between the supporting plate 13 and another plate 15, a suitable number of gears 16 are mounted to receive and transmit the turning motion of the shaft 12. A pair of bevel gears 1'? transmit this motion to the vertical shaft 18, and another parts pair of bevel gears transmits the motion to a short horizontal shaft 19, to which fan 20 is secured.
The turning motion of the shaft 12 is caused by the weight of a person using the y bed, the weight of the person acting on the unless a certain Weight is put on the bed spring.
The bed spring is raised to a position high enough to allow an unwinding of the cables from the operating pulley 6. The cables are rewound by turning one of the shafts in the gears raising at the same time the bed spring. For the purpose of rewindin-g the cables, one of the shafts is provided with a crank, or a square for a crank or key, not shown in the drawing but which will easily be understood as possible. The shaft 21, see Fig. 2, is indicated as preferable for this urpose.

In combination with a bed having a frame and a spring, said spring suspended wlthin the frame, a fan mounted above the bed spring, operating mechanism mounted below the bed spring being connected with the fan above the bed spring, and suspendlng means secured to the bed frame and operating mechanism serving as support for the bed spring.
2. In combination with a bed having. a frame and a spring suspended within the frame, a fan mounted on the bed spring, operating mechanism secured to the bed spring in connection with the fan, and suspended means connecting the bed frame with the operating mechanism supporting the bed spring.
3.
