M. J. ROBINSON.
BUCKLE. APPLICATION FILED 0m. 30. ms.

Witn eases Inventor I. W Attorneys 111W TTE MAJOR J. ROBTNSON, OF LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
BUCKLE.
Application filed October 30, 1916.
17 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAJOR J. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to buckles, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character adapted especially for use upon arctics 'or overshoes, altl'iough useful for various other purposes.
It is the object of the invention to provide a buckle, the two parts or members of which are provided with novel interengageable means, whereby the parts can be readily attached and detached and adjusted relative to one another, the device being extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as ornate and compact, and also being thoroughly practical, efficient and convenient in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing fromthe spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front view of the buckle.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Fig. 8 is a cross section taken on the line 3-8 of Fig. 1.
The buckle embodies a pair of members or parts, each of which can be stamped from sheet metal or otherwise manufactured in a simple and inexpensive manner.
One member 1 is in the form of a rectangular plate curved longitudinally to fit an article of foot wear when the buckle is so used, although the member or plate 1 can be flat or other shape, according to the use to which the buckle is put. The plate or memher 1 is provided at one end with a transverse slot 2 for attaching said end of the plate to the article of foot wear, straps or other object, and the plate has alongitudinal thickened portion 3 extending from the slot to the other end of the plate 1. The thickened portion 3 is provided with a longitudinal series of transverse slots 4 having the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1917.
Serial No. 128,533.
undercut or beveled ends 5, said slots lbeing of clove-tailed shape for the locking engagement of the other member or part of the buckle.
The second member or part of the buckle, designated (3, is of open rectangular form, and as illustrated, is curved longitudinally to lit the plate or member 1 which it overlaps. That end 7 of the member (3 remote from the plate or member 1 is adapted for attachment to the article of foot wear, strap or other object, it being noted that the remote ends of the two members areprovided with attaching means, while the adjacent ends of the members are adapted to be overlapped, the side portions of the member 6 overlapping the edge portions of the plate or member 1, while the thickened portion 3 is receivable in the opening of the member 6.
The side portions of the member 6 are arched or curved at the overlapped end of said member, to provide the finger pieces or portions 8, which can be conveniently pressed together by the thumb and finger. Projecting from the inner edges of the finger pieces 8 are tongues 9 projecting toward one another in alinement transversely of the buckle, the end of one tongue 9 being provided with an open slot 10' slidably receiving the reduced extension 11 projecting from the end of the other tongue, whereby to guide the tongues for sliding movement toward and away from one another. The member 6 is resilient, and normally tends to expand whereby to separate the tongues 9 and finger pieces 8, the tongues 9 forming that end of the member 6 remote from the cross bar 7. The finger pieces 8 have lugs 12 projecting therefrom to bear upon the edge portions of the plate or member 1 as seen in Fig. 3, whereby to support the tongues 9, and to assist in holding the two parts or members in proper relation. The free ends of the tongues 9 are provided with dove-tailed lugs 13 which are normally separated under the tension of the member 6.
When the finger pieces 8 are pressed toward one another, this moves the lugs 13 against one another, so that they can be readily inserted into or withdrawn from one of the slots 4: to close or open the buckle respectively. When the lugs 18 are inserted in one of the slots 4:, and the member 6 re leased, the side portions of said member will be separated, together with the linger pieces 8 and lugs 13, and. said lugs will therefore be engaged with the undercut ends of the slots 4, as seen in Fig. 3, to lock the parts together in overlapping relation. It will be noted that the lugs 13' are engageable with the various slots 4 for purpose of adjustment. The buckle embodies two parts as above described, and is convenient and effectlve 1n use upon overshoes and other articles.
. Having thus described the invention,
' what is claimed as new is:
' 1. A buckle embodying a sheet metal member having a slot provided wlth undercut ends, and a second sheet metal member havin g 'an opening and divided at one end, the
second mentioned member being bent adjacent to said end to provide arched finger pieces, the second mentioned member having portions projecting toward one another from said finger pieces, and said portions having lugs projecting therefrom engageable in said slot.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for jecting therefrom to enter said slot and engage the ends thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MAJOR J. ROBINSON.
