IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS..

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 113,239, dated January 30, 1872.

Specification describing a new Improvement in Garpet-Strctchers, invented by WILLIAM P. D. GLAYBROOK, of Palmyra, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri.

This invention relates to an improved device for stretching carpets and for holding the same in position while being fastened and it consists in the peculiar construction and coinbin ation ot' parts to forni a simple and convenient device, which is adapted for operation in rooms of various sizes, as will be hereinafter fully described.

In the drawing, A represents a longitudinal bar, on both sides of which are arranged vcrtical projections B. C are grooves or notches of a V-shaped form, formed between said projections. D is a longitudinal channel, which is formed by the projections at the sides and by the upper surface ot' the bar D. Eis a detachable pla-te or strip, which accomplishes the object hereinatter explained, and is placed, when the device is in operation, into either ot' the notches in the bar A. F represents an adjustable leverar1n, the lower or rear end of which is provided with a head, G, that is adapted to slide freely in the channel formed in the bar A. H is a slotted or bit'urcated arm, having a cross-head, I, at its outer or front end, which carries a series of downwardly-proiecting prongs or points, J. The lever-arm F tits in the slot in the arm H, and both parts are made adjustable in length upon each other by means of said slot in connection with a series of holes, K, and a fastening-pin, L, which is passed transversely through the holes.

Ihe operation of the device is as follows, viz The rear end of the bar A is placed against the washboard or other suitable support located in a portion ofthe room opposite to that in which the carpet is being stretched. The detachable plate E is then placed cdgewise into either ot' the notches in the projections to form a bearing-surface for the head G on the leverarm F. Said plate forms a longitudinal support for the lever-arm while the channel and side projections form vertical and lateral supporting-surfaces for the same. The various parts being' arranged as above-described, the prongs on the cross-head are inserted into the carpet, when, by applying a downward pressure upon the leverarni, the cross-head and its attached arm are forced forward together with the carpet. To hold the carpet in position when )fastening it to the Hoor it is only necessary to insert a su pplementary pin, M, through the two arms, F. H, which serves to hold the operative parts in a ixed position to prevent the carpet from movine'.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the bar A, when constructed as described, with the detachable plate E, leverarm F, slotted arm H, pin L, crosshead I, and prongs J, as herein shown and described.
