Description
GEORGEBRODIE` improvement in Band Tightehers.
Patent-edlan.'30,1872.
@55261195632 www NYM/vwd GEORGE BRODIE, OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAND-TIGHTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,228, dated January 30, 1872; antcdated January 20, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BRoDrn, of J ett'erson county, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Tighteners; a-nd I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and the letters ot' reference marked thereon making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my apparatus. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the clamping'- jaws.
My improvement relates to apparatus or devicesoi'or facilitating the securing or connect ing of the ends of iiat metal bands or straps surrounding bales of cotton and other mate, rial. The nature of my invention consists ot' a lever having secured or hinged toit, a short distance from its lower end, a flat bar, upon which the clampingjaws, between which the straps or bands are held, slide, and may be adjusted, as occasion requires. The object of my invention is to obtain a cheap, durable, and powerful apparatus, by which the ends ot' the bands or straps used for surrounding bales of cotton and other material may be drrwn together and more readily secured.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a hand-lever, to which is secured an eye, (l, a short distance from its lower end. To this eye is pivoted or hinged a iiat bar, l, having upon its outer end a number of small holes for adjusting the clamping-jaws.
These clamping-jaws are of a peculiar con struction, being made in two parts, O l), fastened together by a rivet, o. The part C, provided with the open or split end O1, is secured to the bar B by a rivet or screw, b, and has its lower end, C2, ilatt-ened. The other part, D, has a slot, d, in its upper end, which slides upon the bar B, thereby openingand closing the lower end, having a projecting lip, E, which passes over the end ot' the part O, and between which the band or straps are placed and, by drawing back upon the hand-lever A, clamped tightly. The hand-lever A, being placed upon one end ot' the band, holds it, while by the motion of the hand-lever the jaws G I) are drawn toward said end, holding the free end between them, when the ends may be easily secured in any of thev usual well-known manners by buckles, rivets, &c. A
The mode ot' operation will be very readily understood, and needs no further description.
Having thus described myinvention,\vhat I claim therein as new, and desire to s c1re by Let-ters Patent ot' the United States, is-
The cotton-tie stretcher herein described, consisting ofthe hand-lever A, hinged bar B, pivoted jaw U with 11a-t end C2, and jaw D having slot cl at one end, and lip E at the other, when constructed for operation as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specifica-tion in the presence ot'two subscribing witnesses.
