DRIVING MECHANISM FOR TYPOGRPAHICAL MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism for Typographical Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawing.
My invention relatesto typographical machines, as for instance linotype machines of the general organization set forth in U. S. Letters Patent to O. Mergenthaler, No. 436,532, wherein the matrices as they are released from the magazine pass to assem bling devices, such as the assembler belt and star wheel, whereby in turn they are delivered to the further assembling mechanism. More particularly, it relates to the means for driving or actuating the said assembling devices, the construction and mode of operation of the improvements being described in the following specification and finallypointed out in the claims. ,In the accompanying drawings, I have shown my invention only in preferred form and by way of example, and as applied to a particular style of machine, but obviously many changes and variations may be made therein, and in its mode of application, which will still be comprised within its spirit. Similarly, it may be applied to other forms of typographical machines, such as typesetters, typecasters and the like, which are designed to handle type or dies, instead of matrices. Generally speaking, I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to any specific form or embodiment, except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims;

Both are driven by suitable connections from the shaft B, which is provided with the fast and loose pulleys B to which motion is imparted by the endless belt C, the latter being under the control of the belt shifter B The parts so far described and their mode of operation, eXcept'as hereinafter set forth, are or may be of any approved or desired form, and in themselves constitute no part of my present invention.
The belt C is actuated from the power shaft D and grooved pulley E thereon, and
one of the principal features of my invcntion is the arrangement of the guide pulleys etc. between the pulleys E and B and their mode of mounting. The opposite stretches of the belt toward and'from the pulley E pass respectively around the upper and lower guide pulleys F and Gr, which are located in substantially the same vertical plane with the pulley E. These two belt stretches between the pulleys F and G and the pulley B pass in opposite directions around a single idle or guide pulley arrangement H, the latter being located in the same plane with the pulley B and at substan tially right angles to the plane of the pulleys E, F, G.
It will be noted ment H is formed with two circumferential grooves II to receive the respective stretches and hold them out of contact at their point of crossing. This feature is of importance in that it eliminates the friction and wear due to the contact of the crossed belt in previous constructions, and also the objectionable slipping and running of the belt off the pulleys is substantially prevented. It will similarly be noted that the journals of all the pulleys are not horizontal, thereby minimizing the liability to escape of the lubricant. These and other advantages are inherent in the improved construction. It will be understood, of course, that the pul ley arrangement I-I might be made up of two independently rotatable sections instead of their being joined together as an integral structure as shown in the drawings, the idea. ofthe invention in this respect being to provide a. pulley arrangement having two grooves in which the opposite stretches of the belt engage, as before described.
As a convenient means of mounting the pulleys F, G, and H, which are intermediate that the pulley arrangethe driven pulley B and the driving pulley E, I preferably support them on the detachable bracket J, which is formed.- with a journal J for the pulley H, and with two rearwardly-extending arms J 2 and- J 3 provided with journals J and J for the pulleys F and: G respectively. The bracket J is also formed with therearwardly projecting member or arbor J, which may be readily engaged in or disengaged from the corresponding socket or recess in the main frame.
As previously stated, I have shown my invention only in preferred form and by way of example, and as applied to the par ticula'r form of assembling devices noted. However, many modifications and alterations therein, and in its mode of application, will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, without departure from its scope,
Having thus described my invention, its
construction and mode of operation, what I.
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:

tem of guiding pulleys also rotating about horlzontal axes and acting to maintain the stretches of the belt separated from each.

7. The combination of a movable member, and driving'means therefor, the said. means comprising a driving'pulley, a driven pul ley, a belt connecting said pulleys, an intermediate idle pulley arrangement H and.
guiding pulleys F, G, together with the sup porting bracket J for the pulleys F, Gr, H, and having the member J adapted to be detachably secured in the framework.
8. The combination of a movable device, with driving meanstherefor, the said means comprising a driving pulley, a' driven pulley, a belt connecting said pulleys, an intermediate idle pulley arrangement H and guiding pulleys F, G, together with. a supporting'bracket J carrying the idle pulley and formed with rearwardly extending arms J J upon which the guiding pulleys F, G, are respectively mounted.
9. The combination of a movable device, with driving means therefor, the said means comprising a driving pulley, a driven pulley, a belt connecting said pulleys, an intermediate idle pulley arrangement H and! guiding pulleys F, G, together with a supporting bracket J carrying the idle pulley H and formed with rearwardly extending arms J J upon which the guiding pulleys F,.G, are mounted, and formed further with a rearwardly extending arbor J 4 by which said bracket is secured to the framework.
10. The combination of a movable memher, and driving means therefor, the said means comprising-the driving pulley E,the driven pulley B arranged to rotate in a plane at right angles to that of the pulley E, a belt connecting said pulleys, and the'system of intermediate pulleys F, G andpulley arrangement H about which the belt travels, the pulley arrangement having two grooves wherein the opposite stretches of the connecting belt engage and being arranged to rotate in the plane of the driven pulley B and the pulleys F and G being arranged to rotate in the plane of the driving pulley E.
11. The combination of a movable member and driving means therefor, the said means comprising a driving pulley, a driven pulley, a belt connecting said pulleys, and a system of intermediate grooved guiding pulleys F and G and pulley arrangement H, the pulley arrangement I-I having two grooves wherein the opposite stretches of the belt engage, and the pulleys F and G being disposed at right angles to the pulley arrangement H and located on opposite sides there-- of and in such position that the portions of the belt passing between the several pulleys will travel in substantially vertical parallel lines situated in the planes of the respective grooves of the pulley arrangement H.
