To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GRANVILLE HU'roHIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Assembler-Clutch Mechanism for Line-Casting Machines, of which the following-is a specification.
The invention relates to .such improvements and consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in front elevation of a broken-away part of a line-casting machine showing the assemblermechanism to which my invention more particularly relates. Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of the assembler-plate and mechanism mounted thereon detached from the rest of the machine. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the broken line 3-3 in Fig. 2 through the axis of the assembler-belt-driving shaft. Fig. 1 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the same taken on the broken line 44 in Fig. 2 through the axis of the assemblor-belt-driving shaft, partly broken away and showing only parts which are in rear of the assembler-plate.
In the operation of line-casting machines, trouble is at times experienced due to the matrices becoming clogged or jammed in the assembler, so that the assembler star-wheel cannot feed them out from the assembler. lVhen this occurs, it is necessary to stop the operation of the assembler, while the operator removes the accumulated matrices.
The principal objects of the invention are to prevent jamming the matrices in the assembler and to enable the operator to easily,
' quickly and safely stop and start the assembler-mechanism at will.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is the assembler-belt upon which matrices are deposited by the feed-chutes, 2. The assembler-mechanism is moiinted upon a plate, 3, termed the assembler-plate, which plate is attached by screws, 4;. to the body or frame, 5, of the machine. The assembler-belt, 1, is driven by a pulley, 6, over which the belt passes, which pulley is fixed upon a sleeve, 7

rotatively mounted in a bearing in the assembler-plate, 3. The assembler-belt-driving pulley, 6, is thus fixed upon the sleeve, 7, in front of the assembler-plate, 3, and a pinion, 8, is fixed upon said sleeve in rear of the assembler-plate, which pinion serves to drive the assembler-star-wheel-pinion, 9, through the medium of an intermediate gear, 10. which carries the assembler-star-wheel, 12.
The rear end of the sleeve, 7, is formed with an enlargement or head, 13; and a beltdriven pulley, 14, is rotatively mounted upon the sleeve, 7, between the head, 13, thereof 8, in rear of the plate, 3. The web of the driven pulley, 14;, has formed upon its rear side a pair of clutch-members in the form of lugs or abutments, 15. A shaft, 16, is mounted to reciprocate longitudinally within the sleeve, 7, while caused to rotate therewith by means of a T-head, 17 on the shaft, which is adapted to play in a transverse slot, 18, formed in the head, 13, of the sleeve. 17, project beyond the head, 13, of the sleeve and form clutch-members engageable with the clutch-members, 15, on the driven pulley, 14, when the shaft, 16, is drawn toward the front of the machine, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. When said members are so engaged, the sleeve, 7, pinion, 8, and assembler-belt-driving pulley, 6, are caused to rotate in unison with the belt-driven pulley, 14, which is continuously driven by the belt 31. By rearward movement of the shaft, 7, the T-head 17, can be disengaged from the clutch-members, 15, of the pulley, 14, as shown in Fig. 4, permitting the pulley, 14, to run as an idle pulley, and stopping the operation of the sleeve, 7, and the assembler-mechanism connected therewith, and also stopping the operation of the starwheel 12. A hand-wheel, 19, is loosely mounted upon the front end of the shaft, 16, between a head, 20, on the front end of the shaft and a nut, 21, fitting a screwthreaded portion of the shaft. The handwheel, 19, can thus be safely grasped by the operator, while the assembler is in operation, and the operator can, without danger, reciprocate the shaft, 16, in disconnecting and connecting the assembler-belt-driving mechanism and star-wheel-driving mechanism with the driven-pulley, 14. To prevent an accidental rearward movement of The ends of the T-head,
