IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,179, dated January 30, 1872.
Nature and Objects of the Iowcntzoa.
vOur invention consists in the combination and arrangement of a vertical slide and key pivoted thereto, and slotted stationary plate, with the shutter and with a catch-lever for holding it in position in such a manner. that, by turning the key partly around, a projection of the same, by turning over an incline in the slot of said stationary plate, forces the slide upward. in such a manner as to disengage the catch from a socket connected with the win-l dow-frame, for the movement of the shutter to its closed or open position. And when the shutter has been brought to its outer position to be fastened, by bringing the key in the opposite direction its projection is brought to bear against the upper edge of the slot, so as to give a reverse motion to said sliding plate, and
thereby to hold the catch-lever securely, so as to lock the shutter, in addition to the ordinary mode of holding it with a spring, so as to make the locking doubly sure and prevent the disengagement of the catch by the action of the Wind or other cause.

Figure 1 is an elevation of a window-frame and shutter, B, with the improved fastening attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at the line x w of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a front view of the stationary plate G, having in connection the slide H and key I. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 5 is a reverse view of the plate G, slide H, and key I from that shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a side view of the key I detached. Fig. 7 is a face view of the plate G. Fig. 8 is an isometrical view of the fulcrumplate C.

General Description. A is the window-frame. B is one of the shutters. C is a plate sunk into the outside of the shutter, and fastened by means of screws. It has a slot, a, as seen in Fig. 2, for the reception of the double lever-catch I), and a fulcrum, b, on which the notch c of the lever rests, as seen in Fig. 2. rlhe lever is held down, as seen in said figure, by means of Jthe gum spring E, in the socket d of the plate C. W' hen the shutter is closed, as seen in Fig. 2, the catch I ot' the lever D is engaged with the stationary slotted plate F; and when it is turned open against the wall of the building the catch 2 on the opposite end of the lever engages with a pla-te or socket, of any convenient construction, secured to a projecting end of the window-sill or to the wall. The spring E, in either case, holds the lever in the position shown in Fig. 2, to maintain its connection with the fixed plate or socket under ordin ary circumstances; but, to prevent the opening of the shutter from the outside by evil-disposed persons by means of the projecting end 2 of the lever D, and to prevent the unfastening of the shutter when opened by the action of the wind upon it, or by other causes, we connect with the shutter and lever-catch a device constructed as follows: The device consists of the stationary plate G, which is sunk into the shutter and conii ned by screws j', the vertical slide H, and the key I. The pieces are shown in connection detached from the shutter in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. The key I is shown separate in Fig. 6, and the stationary plate G in Fig. 7.
The plate G has a slot, g, at its lower end, into which the inner end of the catch-leverD has a free up-and-down movement. `The slide H has a slot, li, in its lower end, which fits on the lever, and is thereby held in its lateral position as well as vertically. The vertical position of the slide is maintained by means of the lugs "i i on the inside of the stationary plate G. The key I is pivoted to the lower end ofthe slide H, so as to admit of a free turning of the same. The plate G is provided with a slot, j, with which the key I is connected, there being a downward projection, k, ofthe slot, which admits of the wide part l of the key passing' freely through in connecting the slide H with the plate. The slotj has an inclined lower edge, m, against which the projection n of the key is turned to give an upward movement of the inner end of the lever D, to disengage the catch l from the slotted plate F. .The same movement of the key disengages the catch 2 on the other end of the lever from its connection when the shutter is in its backward posit-ion. When the shutter is in its position to be locked, either shut or open, by turning the key in a reverse direction, so as to bring its projection a against the upper edge o of the siotj, as seen in Fig'. 2, the catch-lever D is held securely in position so as to prevent the disarrangement of the catch l or 2, as the case may be, and thus to effectually lock the shutter in either position.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the plate G, having a slot, j, constructed as fiescribed, the slide H, and key I, having a projection, n, with the shutter B and catchviever D, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
