EVENER-BOARD FOR BOOKBIN DIN G-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 191%.
Application filed April 27, 1914. Serial No. 834,587.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MOBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Athens, county of Athens, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Evener-Boards for Bookbinding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to binding machines of the class in which loose sheets placed, evened, and perforated and in this manner prepared for the binding process which is also perfected before the sheets are removed from the machine.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable evener board for binding] machines so that the perforations to be made in the sheets to be bound may be placed at such a distance from the edge of the sheets as may be desired.
My invention consists of certain details of construction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure I shows a perspective view of a part of a biniding machine fitted out with my device; an
Fig. II shows a sectional view of the same.
Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference numerals 10 and 11 are used to indicate the forward standards of a bind ing machine and the numeral 12 the pressure bar designed for upward and clownward movement therein. The numeral 13 indicates the slot in the pressure bar designed as a guide for a bit (not shown) by means of Which perforations are bored through the sheets 14, to be bound. The sheets rest on the base plate 15, and the eX tension removable base 16.
The foregoing references relate to old constructions of binding machines and are only shown and described herein to form a basis for my invention.
y invention consists of an evener board 17 designed to, when in place, constitute a wall against which the sheets are forced for evening the edges thereof. The construction of the evener board must be such that it can be removed so as to be out of the way while the binding process is going on. Also it is often desirable to have the perforations farther from the forward edge of the sheets than is ordinarily done. My device provides are for both of these objects by the following construction The numerals 18 and 19 indicate like bars mounted in advance of, and parallel to, the standards 10 and 11, respectively, a space being left between each bar and its respective standard. The lower end of each bar is provided with a lug which extends through a longitudinal slot in its respective base members 20 and 21, and is held in any desired position in the slot by means of a set screw 22. To the upper extremity of each bar is secured a right angular, rearwardly extending arm, 23 and 24, respectively, each arm provided with a longitudinal slot through which a set screw 25 passes and is secured in. its respective standard. By this construe tion it is obvious that the bars 18 and 19 may be set at any desired distance from the standards, within the scope determined by the length of the slots in the arms and the base. The upper extremity of each bar is provided with a recess 26 and 27, respectively, designed as seats for lugs 28 and 29, respectively, secured as shown, on the evener board 17.
The numerals 30 and 31 indicate lugs or trunnions, extending outwardly, one from each lower end of the evener board, said lugs being designed to engage in their respective slots between the standards 11 and 12 and the bars 18 and 19 respectively, and to travel upwardly and downwardly therein. When the evener board is in place operating to even the sheets placed in the binding machine the lugs 28 and 29 are resting in their seats 26 and 27 respectively, obviously the evener board being suspended therefrom.
en it is desired to remove the evener board it is raised upwardly until the lugs 28 and 29 are released, the upper end then pulled outwardly and the board then moves downward of its own weight, the lugs 30 and 31, traveling in their respective slots, until the board assumes the position shown in the drawings.
When it is desired to have the perforations to be made in the sheets farther than the ordinary distance the bars 18 and 19 are moved outwardly to the desired point and there secured in the manner hereinbefore described. It is obvious this operation will secure the desired result.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A book binding machine comprising a frame including a base plate and supporting standards extending above and below the plate, a vertical bar secured to each standard in spaced relation thereto to provide a vertical space extending above and below the base plate, and an evener board having trunnions slidably engaged in the vertical spaces provided between the standards and bars to permit of sliding and pivotal movement of the evener board, and means on the latter to engage the bars and support the board in cooperating relation with the base plate.
2. A. book binding machine comprising a pair of base members having slots, standards secured to the members, a base plate carried by the standards, a vertical bar adjustably secured in the slot of each base member for movement toward and from adjacent standard, and an evener board having parts engaged between the bars and standards whereby said evener board may be moved to and from a position adjacent the base plate.
3. A book binding machine comprising a pair of base members each having a h0rizontal slot, a standard rising from each member, abar for each base member adjustably secured at its lower end in the slot of sail member, means adjustably securing the upper end of each bar to the adjacent standard, an evener board slidably and pivotally engaged with the bars, a base plate supported by the standards, and-means for holding the evener board on the bars against movement and in cooperative relation with the base plate. 7
4. A book bindingmachine comprising a base plate, standards adjacent the plate, vertical bars arranged in advance of the standards, adjustable connections between the standards and bars whereby the spacing of the bars from the standards may be varied, the upper ends of the bars beingprovided with seats, an evener board provided with trunnions slidably engaging the bars, adapted to engage in to support the evener base plate.
