Patented June 26, 1917.
Application filed April 11, 191 Serial No. 90,428.
0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BERT H. SMITH and VVILLTAM A. INwoon, citizens of .the United States of America, residing at Fairbnry, in the county of Jefferson and :State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oiling Devices, ,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in oiling devices and more particularly to oiling'devi'ces for-reciprocating pistons and valve stems in steam, oil, and air engines and pumps andtheprimary object is to provide a means for applying hard oil, commonly known pin grease, thereto.
Still another object ofthe invention resides in providing a casting formedof two sections and adaptedto bese'cu-red to the piston removably, the casting being provided with an annular passage forlgreasewhichis designed to flow radiallyto the-pistonnor stem on which the :device is applied.
A .still further objectresides' in providing a device which: is simpleand durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very. eflicient and useful in operation.
With these and :otherobjects in View, our invention consists in the novel ofeatures of construction, combination .and arrangement of pa-rts'as will be hereinafter .referredto and more particularlypointed out in the specification and claims. H
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:? 7
Figure 1.is a side elevation of aidevice constructed in accordance with my invention;
F i 2 is a plan view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a section as seen on the line 83 of Fig. 2.
In describing the invention we shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 and 2 designate semi-annular sections of a metallic casting, the latter being annular and designed to fit closely on a piston, valve stem or other movable shaft of like character, the inner periphery of the same being concaved as shown at 2 in the drawing.
The sections of the casting are provided at their ends with lateral lugs 3 which afford means whereby bolts 4 may be engaged therewith to secure the sections together and formed integral with the casting and pro jecting radially therefrom are the lugs or tongues 5 in which are provided openings for guide purposes or which afford means whereby the castings may be secured in place, if desired.
The sections 1 and 2 of the casting are each provided with a channel or passage way 6 which is formed centrally thereof and when said sections are secured together a complete annular channel or'passage way is formed which provides a grease channel in the casting. Extending transversely throughithe sections of the casting are a pluralityof radial channels or passage ways-7 which afford communication between the passage or channel 6 and the concavedinner periphery of the casting. It may behere statedthat this concaved portion 2 is only arranged about centrally ofthe'inner periphery so as to form an annular channel or socket around the piston, upon which the device is. applied.
ormed integral with the section 2 of the casting. and projecting radially therefrom is acylindrical socket member 8 which is internally threaded and. the interior of said socket member is adapted for communication with the annular channel or passagefi through themedium of a channel or passage way 9. The socket 8 forms a reservoir for the greaseor hard oil and the latter is adapt ed-to be forced through the channel 9v into the. annular passage 6 by means of a plug 10 whichiis threaded lnto engagement with the threaded, socket 8. The plug 10 has a squared socket 11 in its outer end whereby :the same may be engaged with an instrumentfor the operation of said plug and it is obvious that the grease may be forced into the passage 6 by forcing inwardly on the plug. In this manner the piston or valve stem may be perfectly lubricated at all times.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and eflicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particu larly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in the form, proportion and in the minor details of construc tion may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described our invention, what ent is 1. A lubricating device including an an-.
nulu's provided with an inclosed annular grease passage therein, the inner periphery of the annulus being provided with an annular groove and means for feeding the contents of the passage to the groove.
2. In a lubricating device, an annular member provided with an inclosed annular passage therein and having the inner periphery concave, said member being also provided with a plurality of radial channels affording communication between the passage and the inner surface and means for feeding grease to the passage and said concave inner periphery.
3. In a lubricating device, an annular member having an annular passage therein and having its inner periphery provided with an annular groove, said passage communicating at various points with the annular groove in said member, a grease reservoir formed on said member and communicating with said passage, and means for feeding the contents of said reservoir to said passage and correspondingly to the groove in the inner periphery.
4. In a lubricating device, an annular member provided with an annular groove in its inner surface and further provided with an annular passage within the same, said passage having communication at various points with the groove, a socket member formed integral with the outer periphery of said member and having communication with said passage, and means for feeding the contents of the socket to the passage and correspondingly to said groove.
5. In a lubricating device, an annular member formed of sections removably secured together and having the inner periphery thereof provided with an annular groove, said member being also provided with an internal annular passage having communication at various points with the groove, a socket member formed integral with and projecting from the outer periphery of said member, said socket member being internally threaded and having communication with said passage, and aplug movably engaged with said socket for feeding the contents of the latter to said passage and correspondingly to said groove.
6. A lubricating device for piston rods and the like comprising a ring provided with an annular grease-containing passage Within the body thereof between its inner and outer periphery, the inner periphery of said ring being provided with an annular groove communicating with said passage, said ring having an exteriorly open grease containing chamber communicating with said passage and means in said chamber for forcing grease into the passage and into said groove.
7. A lubricating device for piston rods and the like comprising a sectional ring having an annular grease-containing passage within the body thereof between its inner and outer periphery and having an annular groove in its inner periphery communicating with said passage, means for securing said ring in position, and means on said ring for forcing grease into said passage and said groove.
8.'A lubricating device for piston rods and the like comprising a sectional ring having an annular grease-containing passage within the body thereof between its I inner and outer periphery and having an annular groove in its inner periphery communicating with said passage, said ring having integral attaching lugs and means on said ring for forcing grease into said passage and said groove.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
