Description

.Feb.'20', .1923.
J-' J. w. McNAMARA.
SWAB.
FILED JUNE 26.1920.
2 SHEETS-SHEET l- INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS:
JOHN w, IVIQNAMABA, earn U, INDIANA.
Application flatt ns 26; 1920. Serial No. 392,064.
To all whom it marl concern? Be it known that I, Jonn W. MONAMARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Swabs, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relatesto means forlubrieating reciprocating rods such as piston rods and valve stem rods, the principal object of the invention being to provide'a'ringvlike container for the lubricant which surrounds the rod and is provided with openings in its inner-periphery forpermitting the lubricant to pass to the rod as the same'is reciprocated throughthe container. 7
The purpose of invention is to do away with the old styleswab and oil cups which are now used to lubricate the rods and packing.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. I
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several 1 views, and in'which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing my invention applied to a piston rod.
Figure 2 is an end view with parts broken away of a slightly different form of the invention.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig ure 2.
Figure t is an end view with parts broken away, of another form-of the invention.
Figure 5 is asection on line 5-5 of Figure 4:. l
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a modification. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one half of the sleeve.
Referring to Figure 1 the rod to be lubri (rated is shown at 1 and 2 indicates the ring like container for the lubricant which surrounds the rod. This container is suitably secured 'to a stationary part, such as the packing gland of a piston rod, so asto be immovable as the rod reciprocates through it. The inner periphery of the container snugly fits the rod, though loose enough to prevent undue friction. The inner wall? i of" the container is provided with afnum: ber of inclined holes 4 which connect the interior of the container with the inner space in which the rod is locatedso'that the lubricant may pass from the" contamer on to the rod. The container is p'r'ovided with a screw cap 5 by which it may be replenished with lubricant. The screw threaded opening in this cap engages the, v screw threads formed on the outer endof the innerflwall 3 which is extended beyond 9 the outer wally-6 of the container and said cap'is formed with a thickened inner part which fits between the inner'and outer walls and forms a tight joint between thec'ap and container.
It will thus be seen'thatas the rod is re ciprocated the lubricant will'be'drawn from the container through the holes-AL and will spread over the rod so as to thoroughly lu bricate the same and will be carried b'y' the rod into-the packing-gland and keep the packing lubricated.
In the form shown in Figures 2 and 3, the outer wall 7 is formed separate from the bottom 8 and the inner wall 9, this bot 1 tom and inner wall being formed integrally and the bottom being screw threaded to the outer wall 7. The part of the container consisting of the inner and bottom parts is divided into two parts so that these parts may be placed on the rod without having to slip them over the endof the rod. In this case the large outer wall is placed over the piston rod and the two halves forming the inner wall and the bottomflare'placed in position surrounding the piston and then.
the parts brought together and the bottom screwed to the'cuter wall, Then the cap" 10 is placed in position, this cap being similar to that shown in the first form. This construction is detachable where the piston rod has enlarged'parts which would prevent "the form shown in Figure 1 from passing over them. a c .1
In the form shown in Figures 4: and 5,the'
container including the inner and outer walls and the bottomis divided into two halves, each half having a pair of end walls 11, the end walls of each pair abutting the 1 other end walls when the container isplaced aroundthe rod. The cap 12 in this form,
its outer edge to receive the edge of the outer wall of the container. The two parts of the cap are held together by means 01 the spring semi-circular member 14- which is provided with a groove 15 to receive the outer periphery of the cap. This form of the device is more particularly adapted for air pump rods and rods where it is impossible or undesirable to pass the container over an end of the rod.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel "features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes tall within the scope of the appended claims.
' What I claim is 1. A lubricator for rechprocating rods comprising an attaching base presenting a bore for the said rod, a perforated sleeve surrounding the bore, flange encircling the sleeve and spaced therefrom to provide an intervening space for hibricant, and. a clo sure cap threaded on the outer end of the said sleeve and movable thereon into contact with the said flange to close the said space, said cap having a thickened portion fitting between the sleeve and flange and providing a tight joint.
2. A lubricator for reciprocating rods comprising a pair of complemental sections presenting perforated sleeve-sections between which the rod is accommodated and a lubricant chamber surrounding the sleeve, the said sleeve having its outer end threaded, and a cap adjustable on the said sleeve for closing the said chamber, said cap having a threaded opening in which the threaded end of the sleeve is confined, whereby the said complemental sections are vheld together.
3. A lubricator for reciprocating rods comprising a ring insertable over a rod and threaded at one end, a sectional closure rne1nher for the threaded end of the ring, said member presenting attaching portions and integral perforated sleeve sections engageable around the rod and threaded shoulder sections having threaded engagement with the threaded end of? the said ring, said ring and sleeve sections being relatively spaced to provide a space therebetween for lubricant said sleeve sections presenting a threaded end beyond the said space, and a closure cap having threaded engagement with the threaded end of the sleeve sections and being adjustable thereon for engaging the said ring to close the said space, said ring and said cap serving to hold the sections of the said closure together.
In testimony whereof I atfix mv signature.
JOHN W. MONAMARA.
