LYMAN PETTIGREW, OF GARDNER, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT lN WRITING-TABLETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 123,045, dated January 23, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN PE'rTIGRnw, of Gardiner, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Portable Writing-Tablets, and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a face view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
This invention has relation to writing-tablets; and the novelty consists in the hereinafter-described construction of an article consisting oi' a stiff board covered or partly-covered with velvet, and provided with a pocket.
The tablet is intended as a substitute for a desk or Writing-table, and the pocket for the purpose of containing a quantity of Writingpaper, as Well as serving as a guard to prevent the paper, when being written on, from being soiled by the hand.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a board or tablet, made of any convenient size, and of a rectangular form. A designates a cushion, consisting of a piece of velvet attached to and covering or partly covering the face of the tablet A. 0n said cushion is laid the sheet of paper to be written upon. B represents a piece of oil-cloth, leather, or other suitable material stretched across the face of the tablet and fastened at the sides, and, if
necessary. at the lower edge. This piece constitutes a pocket to contain a quantity of writing-paper and envelopes. 1t will be seen that it does not extend to the upper end of the tablet, but leaves the greater part of the cover exposed.
In using the tablet the sheet of paper is drawn out of the pocket gradually, according as the page becomes filled, the hand resting on the outside of the pocket, which thus forms a guard to prevent the sheet from being soiled.
The tablet A may be more readily made of tin than oi' any other suitable and durable material. When tin is used the pieces Al and B may be cut to the proper size and laid on the tablet, aft-er which its edges are bent over, as shown at b, so as to secure all the parts together.
The tablet is especially designed to be carried in the pocket, and hence the back should be sti' and rm to prevent the paper from being crumpled or curled.
I claim as my invention- The improved Writing-tablet herein described, consisting of the metallic back A bent over at the edges to secure the velvet cushion A', said cushion covering` the lower portion of the back, and a pocket, B, substantially' as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: LYMAN- PETTIGREW.
