Description

PETER MARTIN;
Improvement in Step La'dd'ers.
NO. 123,032. Patented Jam 23, 1872.
' jay],
- UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
PETER MARTIN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEP-LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,032, dated January 23, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PETER MARTIN, 0f Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step-Ladder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of iron brackets for supporting the top of a step-ladder, and from which brackets extend arms on either side, upon which the legs are suspended, said arms thus taking the place of hinges, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a rear elevation of the upper end of a step-ladder with my brackets attached thereto.
A represents the truss, B the top, and G O the legs of a step-ladder. D D represent the brackets, constructed as shown in Fig. 1, and
placed one on each side on the rear of the ladder. The upper end of each bracket is secured on the under side of the top B by ascrew, while the lower end is in a similar manner secured to the truss A, a lug extending on the inner side thus holding the bracket firmly in its place. The brackets D D thus form a firm and secure support for the top of the step-ladder. From the outer side, or, if desired, from the inner side, of each bracket, near the lower end, extends an arm, G, upon which the leg 0 is suspended by means of a strap, a, attached to its upper end. These arms andstraps obviate the necessity of using hinges, and is simple and cheap, yet durable. I
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The brackets D D, with arms G Gr,'all constructed and applied to the ladder, substantiall; as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER MARTIN.
Witnesses HENRY E. J EPSON, THOMAs H. HAGGERTY.
