ROBERT HOPE-JONES, OF NORTH ToNawnNnA,
NEW YORK; CECIL HOPE-JONES TEM- PORARY ADMINISTRATOR OF THE PERSONAL ESTATE OF SAID ROBERT HOPE-JONES,
DEOEASED.
SHUTTER FOR ORGAN SWELL-BOXES.
Application filed February l2, 1914.
To @ZZ 'zo/wm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT HOPE-JONES, of North Tonawanda, in the county of N iagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutters for Organ Swell-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to improvements in sound proof walls for chambers or rooms such as, swell boxes for pipe organs, telephone booths or other inclosed spaces from which it is desired to prevent or regulate the transmission of sound to the exterior thereof, and it has for its special object to provide a movable section or shutter in such wall that will be light in weight, and consequently easy to set into motion, and whose position may be easily regulated to entirely cut off or permit -to any desired degree, the escape of sound to the exterior of the chamber. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a sectional view through a wall of a chamber in which a shutter constructed in accordance with my invention is mounted, the shutter being shown in end elevation, and
Fig. 2 is a top View thereof.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate the same parts.
In the construction of shutters for organ swell boxes it has heretofore been the practice to build them of solid wood which not only transmitted sound therethrough to some extent, but in addition resulted in shutters which on account of their weight required considerable energy to operate them quickly. These disadvantages are obviated by my present invention, of which I have shown one embodiment in which the shutter is constructed of a plurality of fiat plates l secured in xed spaced relation to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 19, 1917. Serial No. 818,195.
each other by spacing members 2 extending longitudinally of the shutter and interposed between the central portions of the plates, or in other words, arranged remote from their outer or lateral edges. rIhe outer edges of the plates are disconnected, as shown, producing a comparatively light structure. The members 2 together with the portion of one of the plates included between them afford a support for the reception of ball bearings 3 about which the shutter may swing. rlhe shutter is adapted to close the edge at of the opening in a wall 5 of an organ swell box, and in order to facilitate its operation the shutter is preferably in out-line in the form of a rhomboid, and the separating strips 2 are of rectangular cross section and located opposite each other approximately in the geometrical center, enabling the bearings 3 to be located at the center of gravity of the shutter, as shown in F ig. l.
The projecting portions of the several plates at the same side of the strips 2 extend different distances from said strips. F or example, the projecting portions A to the right of the spacing members 2 are progressively longer from the top downward, and on the left the portions B are gradually shorter from the top downward. On account of being of different dimensions the adjacent plates have different vibration frequencies, therefore vibrations imparted to the inner plate are unable to set up sympathetic vibrations in the next plate.
The plates may also be prevented from vibrating synchronously by making some of them of greater weight than others for example by applying to the surface of some a layer 6 of felt or other material.
The blades are preferably constructed of wood laminations and are usually made from five to seven ply according to the strength and weight desired.
It will be seen that extremely strong, light and easily manipulated shutter, and at the same time one that is practically impervious to sound.
I claim as my invention:
l. A shutter for sound proof boxes, consisting of a plurality of spaced plates, connected together at their central portions and I have provided an disconnected at their lateral edges, the adjacent pla-tes having dierent Vibration frequencies.
2. A shutter for sound proof boxes, conl sisting of a plurality of plates, and spacing members interposed between adjacent plates and secured thereto, said spacing members together with the included portion of a plate'alording a bearing support.
3. A shutter for sound proof boxes, consisting of a plurality of plates and spacing members interposed between the plates remote from the lateral edges thereof, -the plates being disconnected at their lateral edges and lthe portions of adjacent plates Copies of this patent maybe obtained for bers extending longitudinally ofk the plates remote from the lateral edges, and secured thereto, said spacing members together with the included portion of a plate affording a 20 bearing support.
