IMPROVEMENT IN TRUCKS FOR LOADING WAGONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,015, dated January 23, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN WM. HARMOUNT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Portable lagon-Loaders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which is illustrated a perspective view of my improved portable wagon-loader.

This invention has reference to that class of devices which are employed in loading or unloading' wagons or vehicles; and the nature thereof' consists of the combination and arrangement of its constituent parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

In the annexed drawing, A A refer to the bottom horizontal supports or bars, between and to the front ends of which is suitably journaled an axle, a, having two wheels or trucks, al a1, which allow of the machine being transported from place to place, thereby rendering it portable. These supports or bars are connected and braced together by the transverse bars a2 a3, and supplied near and at their rear extremities with a platform, a4, upon which the operator of the machine may stand. B B represent two uprights or vertical supports, which are mortised into and otherwise firmly secured to the upper sides of the front ends Of the bars A A, and connected together at their upper ends by the cross-bar b. These uprights are further secured to the bars A A by the diagonal braces C C, as plainly seen in the drawing. D D designate two handles, which are fastened to the braces G O and the uprights B B in any suitable manner and by any desired or suitable means, their rear ends being reduced and curved with a rounding surface, to permit of their being conveniently and easily grasped when it is desired to move the machine. E refers to a beam, which is secured within and at a right angle to the crossbar b. The beam E is so inclined as to throw its inner end down below its projecting or outer end, and the said inner end is caused to occupy the furthest distance from its supporting-bar b, for the purpose of strengthening the said projecting portion of the beam E. Fis an upright, fastened to the bar a2 of the supports A A, and to the inner end of the beam E for supporting that part of the latter. e e are pulleys or shives, one of which is located in each end of the beam E, and over which the hoisting-rope G passes. H refers to a cylinder or drum, the axle of which has its bear ings iu plates h h, one of which is fastened to the inner side of one of the handles D D, and the other to the upright F and a stud, f, fastened to bar a3 of the supports A A. Around this cylinder or drum is wound the rope G. I is a cogged wheel, which is attached to the projecting part of the axle of the cylinder H, and is for imparting motion to the latter, the said wheel receiving motion from the pinion fi, which is located upon the shaft of and revolved by the crank K. J is the shaft of the crank K, having itslbearings upon or within the plates h h, and carrying the ratchet i1.V A pawl, t2, engages with the ratchet i1, for the purpose of preventing the crank-shaft J from being revolved when it is desired. L represents a pair of barrel-hooks, which are attached to the rope G, although a pair of cant-hooks may be substituted in their place when boxes and the like are to be raised.

As has been already stated, the object of this invention is to load and unload wagons or vehicles, the operation of which is too obvious for explanation, still it may be used with advantage in setting up boxes and barrels in tiers in stores and warehouses, &c. Further, it may be used in removing heavy stones from quarries, or for lifting any heavy bodies.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the supports A A, having the trucks or wheels al al, and platform a4, of the handles D D, uprights B B b, beam E, and support F, all arranged substantiallyY as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. An improved portable wagon-loader, consisting of the truck A A a1 D D, cylinder H, signed my neme this 9th day of December, A. eog'ged Wheel I, crank K, shaft J ratchet il, D. 18717 in presence of two subscribing witpawl i2, pinion i, hoisting-rope G, uprights B nesses.
