TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming pare of Letters :Patent No. 577,471, dated February 23, 1897.
l Application filed September 25, 1896. Serial No. 606,968. (No model.)
T all whom, it mmf concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mound City, in the county of Linn and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trucks, yof which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which. similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to trucks, and to that class thereof usually employed for moving freight, baggage, and other heavy articles from one point to another; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class whereby various articles may be quickly and easily moved from one point to another and loaded onto a car or other vehicle and as quickly and easily removed therefrom.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol-v lowing specication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which FigureY 1 is a side view of my improved truck; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section thereof; Fig. 3, a plan view of a movable frame which I employ in connection therewith; Fig. 4, a plan view of the truck with the frame removed.
In the practice of my invention I provide a truck which comprises a main frame 5, which is provided with the usual axles 6, on which are mounted the usual Wheels 7, and the main frame 5 of the truck maybe of any desired form and construction, and secured to or formed on the upper side of saidmain frame and centrally thereof is a wheel 8, which forms a bearin g for the supplemental revoluble frame,
hereinafter described. I also provide a supplemental oblong frame 9, which is composed of al bottom or bottom frame'lO and vertical side strips 11, and secured to or formed on the under side of the body of the supplemental frame is a bearing-ring 12, which is of the same form as the ring 8 and which rests thereon, and the bottom 10 of the supplemental frame 9 is provided with a pin or bolt 13, which passes centrally through said rings and through a cross plate or bar 14, which f orms a part of the main frame, and
- as thus constructed the supplementalA frame 9 is free to revolve or to be turned ou the main frame, as will be readily understood. I also provide a lock for the supplemental frame and to prevent the revolution thereof, which consists of a rod 15, mounted in keepers 16 at the side of the main frame 5, and one end of said rod is provided with a head or handle 17 and the other is pivotally connected with a weighted crank-lever 18, which is connected with the main frame 5 of the truck at 19, and the other arm 2O of said crank-lever is adapted to operate in a longitudinal slot 21 in the bottom of the supplemental frame, and each end of said supplemental frame is provided with one of the slots 21, and by means of this device it will be seen that by simply operating the rod when the supplemental frame is turned in line with the main frame 5 the said supplemental frame may be locked in position and cannot be turned on the main frame of the truck. I also provide an auX- iliary sliding frame 22, which consists of side bars 23 and bars 24 and a body portion, which consists of longitudinal plates or bars 25, which are connected with each other and with the side bars 23 by cross-rods 26.
The auxiliary sliding frame 22 is provided at each end with a handle 27, and the side bars 23 thereof are provided with a plurality of rollers 28, any desired number of which may be employed, and said auxiliary frame is adapted to fit within the side walls or iianges 11 of the supplemental frame, and in this position it rests on the rollers 28 and is free to be moved back and forth over said supplemental frame, and I also provide sliding bars 29, which are mounted at one end of the sliding frame in suitable keepers 30 and with each of which is connected a sliding rod 3l, mounted in keepers 32, and in practice the truck is preferably made sufficiently high to allow the bars 29 to be projected so as to rest on a cariloor, in order to prevent the depression of the end of the truck-frame 2l while the sliding frame is being loaded, and I also prefer to provide a number of the sliding frames, and in this event one of these frames may be moved into a car and left, while the truck is returned and another frame placed thereon and locked, and by this means the truck may be kept constantly in use, as will be readily understood.
IOO
In practice the freight, baggage, or other articles are placed on the auxiliary frame 22 and may be transported to any desired point, and whenever it is desired to load the same into a car the truck is run up adjacent to the side thereof, the su pplem ental fram e is turned in the main frame of the truck until it is at right angles to the door, and the auxiliary frame is then moved along the main frame in the direction of the door, and if the height of the truck is suflicient the auxiliary frame may be run into the car, or so that one end thereof will rest on the floor of the car and the other on the truck, or the sliding frame may be run into the car, as described.
It will be apparent that a car may be unloaded in the same manner, and the truck maybe similarly employed for loading wagons and other vehicles and for unloading the same.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A truck, comprisingamain fra-ine, which is supported on wheels in the usual manner, a supplemental frame mounted thereon and pivotally connected therewith, centrally thereof, and adapted to turn thereon, and an auxiliary frame mounted on said supplemental frame, and adapted to slide thereon, and means for locking said frames together, substantially as shown and described.
2. A truck, comprisinga main frame, which is supported on wheels in the usual manner, a supplemental frame mounted thereon and pivotally connected therewith, centrally thereof, and adapted to turn thereon, and an auxiliary framemounted on said supplemental frame, and adapted to slide thereon, and
means for locking said frames together, said supplemental frame being also provided with vertical side strips between which the auxiliary frame is adapted to move and said auxiliary frame being provided with revoluble rollers or supports at each side thereof, substantially as shown and described.
3. A truck, comprising a main frame which is supported on wheels in the usual manner, a supplemental frame revolubly mounted on the main frame and pi votally connected therewith centrally thereof, and said supplemental frame being provided with vertical side Walls or strips and an auxiliary frame which is longitudinally movable in said supplemental frame, substantially as shown and described.
4. A truck, comprising a main frame which is supported on wheels in the usual manner, a supplemental frame revolubly mounted on the main frame and pivotally connected therewith centrally thereof, and said supplemental frame being provided with vertical side walls or strips and an auxiliary frame which is longitudinally movable on said su pplemental frame, and devices for locking the supplem ental frame tothe main frame, and the auxiliary frame to the supplemental frame, said devices being adapted to be operated from either end of the truck, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of September, 1896.
WILLIAM Il. VARD.
