T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MORRIE BRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Wall-Bed, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a vertically swinging Wall bed, and one object of the invention is to improve the cam which controls the movement of the bed as the same is swung downwardly and forwardly. Another object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the vertically swinging framework of the bed may be assembled with certain relatively fixed parts of the structure.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of constructure hereinafter described and claimed, it being. understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows the structure in top plan, the bed being lowered;
Fig. 2 shows the device in longitudinal section, the bed being lowered;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the bed frame and attendant parts;
Fig. 4 is a fragmental perspective showing certain of the working parts of the device, the bed frame being swung upwardly into a substantially vertical position;
Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken through the guide;
Fig. 6 is a perspective of the guide;
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the structure which may be used for cushioning the downward movement of the bed.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the wall of a room or apartment having a recess 2, the floor being indicated at 3. Since the bed forming the subject matter of this application can be mounted in a cabinet, if desired, the parts 1, 2 and 3 will be referred to hereinafter as a support.

cated at 9 in Fig.2, the foot 7 abuts against one end of the bed frame 4 when the latter is lowered, outward swinging movement of the foot 7 thus being prevented.
Mounted on the floor 3' adjacent the recess 2 are bearings 10 in which is mounted for rocking movement a shaft 11 having arms 12 pivoted as shown at 14 to the side portions of the frame 4 of the bed. Attached to the side walls of the recess 2 are guides 15, each including a rear wall 16 merging into a curved top '17, each guide 15 including an upper front flange 19 and a lower front flange 20, the latter element being disposed opposite to the lower end of the rear wall 16, as will be understood readily when Fig. 6 is examined. By means of a pivot element 21, a cam 22 is movably assembled with the guide 15 near to the upper front flange 19, the cam being equipped in its rear end with a seat 28. Mounted in the rear portion of the bed frame 4 is a shaft 24 carrying rollers 25 adapted to move between the parts 20 and 16 of the guide 15, and to be received in the seat 23 of the cam 22 under circumstances which will be pointed out hereinafter. When the bed frame 4 is turned upwardly into the substantially vertical position shown in Fig. 4, the free end of the cam 22 rests on the upper end of the flange 20.
A longitudinally extensible member may be provided, for the purpose of cushioning thedownward swinging movement of the bed frame 4 from the position of Fig. 4 into the position of Fig. 2. This part of the invention may comprise a socket 27 united by a securing element 26 with one wall of the recess 2. Slidable within the socket 27 is a socket 28 merging into an arm 29 provided-witha hook 30, a slot 31 being formed in the arm 29. A guide pin 32 passes through the slot 81 and is mounted in the side wall of the recess 2. Located within the sockets 27 and 28 is a retractile spring 33, one end of which is attached as shown at 34 to the socket 27, the other end of which is attached as shown at 35 to the socket 28.
Suppose that the frame 4 lies within the recess 2 and is in the substantially vertical position of Fig. 4. Then the operation of the device is as follows When the frame 4 is swung downwardly, the same is supported by the arms 12 on the shaft 11. the shaft 11 rocking in the bearings 10.- As the. frame 4 is swung downwardly,
the rollers 25 move upwardly between the parts 20 and 16 of the guide and ultimately engage in the seat 23 of the cam 22, the latter being supported on the flange 20 of the guide 15 as clearly shown in Fig. 4. It is to be noted that the seat 23 in the cam 22 forms, as shown in Fig. 4, an upper edge 22" and a lower edge 22". The roller clears the edge 22 and engages the edge 22 and consequently the cam is swung upwardly by the roller. As the rear end of the bed frame 4 continues to move upwardly and forwardly, the rear or inner end of the cam 22 rises also, and ultimately, the cam 22 assumes a substantially vertical position and abuts against the flange 19 of the guide 15 at the time the pivotally mounted foot 7 comes into "contact with the floor 3. Thus, the head end of the bed is adequately supported. As the head end of the bed rises and moves forwardly, when the bed is lowered, the shaft 24 engages with the hook 30 of the longitudinally extensible cushioning member shown in Fig. 7, and, when this operation takes place, the sockets 27 and 28 move longitudinally with respect to each other, the spring 33 being put under tension.
When the bed frame 4 is raised into the vertical position of Fig. 4, the roller 25 ultimately leaves the cam '22 and the latter comes to rest on the upper end of the flange 20, as shown in Fig. 4. During this opera tion, eonsi'sting of a raising of the bed frame 4 into a vertical position, the shaft 24 will leave the hook 30,'wher'eupon the spring 23 contracts the longitudinally extensible cushi'oning member of Fig. 7.
Owing to the provision of the arms 12, a raising and lowering of the bed frame 4 is facilitated since, as the frame 4 is raised, the center of gravity of the frame moves rearwardly and the moment of the frame 4 becomes less, the labor incident to raising the frame being deereased accordingly. The arms 12, further coact with the supporting cam 30 since the arms tend to give the bed frame 4 a forward movement as it is lowered, thereby causing the rollers 25 on the bed frame or, more specifically, on the shaft 24 to coact properly within the cams 22.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:-
l. In a device of the class described, a support; an arm pivoted to the support; a bed frame movable for raising and lowering, the arm being pivoted to the intermediate portion of the bed frame; a cam pivoted to the support; a projection on the frame; and means for supporting the cam in the path of the projection when the frame is lowered, the cam being adapted to swing upwardly in engagement with the projection, when the frame is lowered, thereby to aeta's a means for upholding the frame during the movement of the frame, and when the frame is in a lowered position.
2. In a 'devioe of the class described, a support; a guide attziched to the support and having an opening onits lower side, the guide including a front flange and a rear wall merging into a top; a bed frame; an arm pivoted at one end to the support and pivoted at'its other end to the frame intermediate the ends of the frame; a cam disposed above the opening, one end of the cam resting on the front flange; means for pivetauy supporting the other end of the cam; a projection on the frame and adapted to be inserted into the guide through the opening, the barn being'liftable to permit the insertion of theproje'ct'ion through the opening, the projection being adapted to move vertically between the flange and the rear wall, the Henge-supported end of the cam lying in'the path of the projection as the projection moves upwardly when the bed is lov've'red, whereby the will sustain the rear end of the frame;
