APPLICATION FILED AuG.7. IsI.

FRANKLIN I. STBER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TRAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June l2, i917.
Application led August 7, 1916. Serial No. 113,543.
To all who/m, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN I. S'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trays, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the acompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trays, the object being to provide a tray which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, and one in which the corners are secured together by dowels in order to form a curved joint which is verystrong and durable.
Another object of my invention is to provide a joint composed of a pair of abutting curved ends of molding strips secured together by a dowel having its upper and lower faces disposed in parallel horizontal planes, one end of said dowel having its edges disposed in parallel horizontal planes, and the other end of said dowel having its edges formed on convened lines in order to produce a strong joint.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof delined by the appended claims.
l/Vith these objects in view,
Figure l is a perspective view constructed in accordance with tion.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one the corners thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail outside perspective view.
VFig. 4 is a vertical section through the join Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In carrying out my invention I employ a laminated bottom 1, on the marginal edges of which are secured molding strips 3, 4, 5, and 6, which are provided with curved abutting ends forming rounded corners. The rounded abutting ends of the molding are provided with horizontally disposed notches in which are seated dowels 7 provided with parallel horizontally disposed upper and lower faces, the outer end of said dowel having its upper and lower edges disposed in parallel horizontal planes and provided with a convexed end corresponding to the curvature of the outer face of the molding.
of a tray my invenrlhe inner end of the dowel is formed with a convexed outline as clearly shown, and the face thereof is concaved corresponding to the curve of the inner face of the molding when the series of molding strips 3, 4, 5, and 6 are arranged in position upon a laminated bottom, and secured together by a dowel and adhesive material a very strong and durable tray is formed which has many advantages over trays of this kind in use as the same can be manufactured very cheaply.
In completing the tray, the edge of the laminated bottom is rounded as clearly shown in the sectional view to eliminate any sharp corners, and by the construction above described, I am able to form a tray of wood composed of a bottom and four strips of molding having curved abutting ends which are secured together by a peculiar construction of dowel whereby I am able to construct the complete tray of wood without the use of fastening members of any kind.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a wooden tray is provided having its sides formed of molding strips provided with curved abutting ends to produce rounded corners which are secured together by dowels of such a constructionthat the joint is strengthened at this point and the molding is held in its proper position on the laminated bottom without the use of fastening members other than the dowel.
I claim:
l. A tray composed of a laminated bottom having sides formed of molding strips, each molding strip being provided with a curved end portion abutting against the curved end portion of the adjacent strip, the abutting ends of the molding strips being transversely notched, and horizontally disposed dowels arranged within the said notches having outer end portions of a greater width than the inner end portions, the end of said dowels being flush with the inner and outer faces of said molding strips.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a tray composed of a bottom having side and end molding strips secured upon the marginal edges thereof, each molding strip being provided with a curved end portion abutting against the adjacent molding strip, the curved ends of said molding strip being' transversely notched, and horizontally disposed dowels secured within said notches provided with parallel horizontally disposed upper und lower faces, the outer end of each dowel having its edges disposed in parallel horizontal planes and the inner end of said doWel having its upper and lower edges formed on Convexed or curved lines, the outer end of said dovvel being convexed and the inner end conoaved to conform to the curva-ture of the inner and outer faces of the molding` at the joint l@ thereof.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN I. STBER.
Witnesses:
