To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, THOMAS P. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazel Green, in the county of Grant, State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Pad-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the art of copy holders and the like, and more especially to improved holder for keeping postoffice money-order pads, bank draft pads, express order pads, counter retail order pads, and calendar pads, and also for holding circular letters and postal cards.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved holder of this kind for keeping such pads on the level with the hand and fore arm, while making out the order, etc., or addressing the letters, postcards or the like.
Heretofore, such order pads when lirst being used are higher than the surface of the desk; therefore the hand and forearm are not on the level with the pad.
Hence it is another' object of the invention to provide an improved holder having a movable support for the pad, which may be intermittentlyv adjusted as the sheets are diminished and the pad becoming thinner, in orderv to keep the pad continually on the level with the hand and the forearm.
In practical iields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

1 designates the body of the holder, which is hollow, and is constructed of any suitable sheet metal. This body comprises the end. pieces 2 and 3, and the bottom and side pieces 4 and 5, and the top piece 6, which is disposed on an inclination from the end piece 2 to the end piece 3. All of said pieces are integrally connected as shown. The top piece 6 is provided with an opening 7 ,which may be any suitable shape, size or dimension, for instance, just so long as the opening T is slightly larger than the size of the pad or the like to be used, and through which opening the pad may be inserted to be supported on the support S. In other words, when it is desired to arrange the pad, the same is iuserted through the opening 7, so as to rest upon the support S and then as the pad diminishes the support is adjusted to keep on a level with the upper face of the holder. The body is provided with a partition 11 on its interior, in order to divide off a com'- partment 12 for the support and the pad thereon. The longitudinal edge portions of the support are provided with downwardlj7 extending flanges 13 and 14. Adjacent the end piece 2 under the part 9 of the top piece a compartment 15 is constructed, by provision of the partition wall 1G, which is of the shape clearly shown in Figs. 4, 5 and G. The flanges 13 and 14 of the clamping sup port engage the partition walls 11 and 16, which partition wall 16 is provided with a vertical slot 17. Fastened at 18 to the bottom piece of the body is the central part of a bowed leafspring 19, the free curved ends of which ride in the U-shaped guide member 20, which is secured in any suitable manner to the under face'of vthe support adjacent the flange 14. Pivoted upon the pin 21 in the compartment 15 is a bell crank lever F22. the arm Q3 of which is provided with a pin 24. which extends through the slot 17 and is fixed to the flange 14 and the flanges of the U-shaped guide member 20 of the support 8. The arm Q5 of the bell crank lever extends through a slot 2G of the part 9 of the top piece 6, and fits loosely in an opening 27 of a slide 28, and the extremity of the arm 25 terminates in a thumb piece Q9. Formed in any suitable manner upon the part 9 of the top piece is an arched housing 30 having the guide ribs 31 and 32, between which and the part 9 of the top piece G the side portions 33 of the slide engage, to guide the slide in its movement. rlhe upper face of the slide 28 ward', the pad protruding through the opening inthe holder. Therefore as the pad diminishes in thickness, it is'held substantially flush with the upper surface' of the holder. Therefore in this case the shank of the thumb screw may be brought in contact with the inclined' cam, thereby holdingthe clamping support' insuchposition; It is to be noted, however, that when the sheets of the pad' diminish the thumb screw may be intermittently uiisci-ewed, thereby allowing` the slide to intermittently move toward the right in Fig. 6, in whichca'se, under tension of the leaf springlv), the support will gradually and intermittently be raised. How ever, thev thumb screw may be dispensedI with, or in other words, need not be operated, in which case the support will automatically rise as'th'e' pad decreases in thickness incident to the sheets thereof being utilized, thereby always maintaining the'pad on the level with the hand and the forearm.
Then the thumb screw is dispensed with, it is-understoodthat the pad to be used shall be ofthe width of the platform` S'. The edges-ofthe pad will then abut the edges of the parts 6 and 9 which project over the platform S. vWhile the face of the pad will then'not be exactly level with G, it will be near enough for all practical purposes. rThe spring tensioning' means will always keep the pad abutting these projecticns asfast as its individual sheets are removed. Of' course it is understood that the padE will have to be bent slightly when it is first in-- serted upon the'platforml S and in removing individual sheets it will be necessary to witlidiaw them from underneath the projections referredv to.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
l. In a pad holder, the combination of a hollow body having an opening in its upper wall and a compartment below the opening, of aA pad support in said compartment to support the pad through and in registration with the opening, spring tensioning mea-ns to causethe support to rise as the pad diminishes in thickness, said spring tensioning means includingl al Usha'ped` guide on the under face' of thel support, inwhich the free ends of the spring tensioning means are guided, al bell' crank lever pivotally mounted' in one end of the bldy and having one arm pivotally connected tothe support,
a housing on' the top of the body having' guides, a slideinounted in said` guides-and having a slot connection with `the other arm of said'lever, andprovided with an inclined cam, and a thumb screw engaging said cam and designed to be intermittently unscrewed, to permit the action of the spring means to elevate the clampingV support as' the pad diminishes in thickness'.
