To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. Vorerrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Lifting-Jack, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to jacks, and aims to provide a novel and improved operating mechanism for jacks of the screw type.
It is the object of the invention to provide a jack adapted especially for jacking up the axles of automobiles, wagons, and the like, although useful for many other purposes, which jack is operated by the oscillation of a handle or lever, and the reversal of movement of the screw being readily accomplished simply by shifting the lever longitudinally, whereby it is not necessary to reach under the vehicle for setting any pawls or like devices when it is desired to reverse the jack.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a jack having the improved features above noted, and which, at the same time is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, it is not apt to get out of order, and is thoroughly practical and eiiicacious in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved jack, portions being broken away.

standard and projects from the upper end thereof. The upper end of the screw 3 is provided with an axle seat or head at to support the object which is raised by the jack. A nut 5 is threaded upon the screw and seats upon the upper end of the stand.- ard 1 to support the screw, and said nut forms the hub of a bevel gear 6. The standard l is provided adjacent its upper end with an outstanding pintle 7 upon which is journaled for rotation a bevel gear 8 meshing with the gear 6. The gear 8 rotates about a horizontal axis, while the gear (3 rotates about a vertical axis, and this provides convenient means for transmitting the motion from the operating member or lever to the nut 5.
The gear 8 is provided with an outstanding annular rim 9 having upon its periphery the teeth or lugs 10. A lever or handle 11 disposed in approximate horizontal position, has a longitudinal slot 12 receiving the pintle 7, whereby the lever can be oscillated and shifted longitudinally upon the pintle. The outer side of the lever 11 has an elongated recess 13 adjacent the slot 12 and within which recess is disposed a washer 14 which is fitted upon the pintle 7,'said washer 14 being held in place by means of a cotter pin or retaining element 15 engaged with the pintle. Thus, the lever 11 is held upon the pintle, and said lever holds the gear 8 in place. The pintle 7 acts as a fulcrum for the lever, as well as acting as a pinion for the gear 8, and the lever has a short arm projecting to the right of the pintle 7, as seen in Fig. 1, and a long arm projecting to the left in said figure. Said long arm can be of any suitable length for providing the desired leverage or purchase. The short arm of the lever has an arcuate lip 16 spaced from the periphery of the rim 9 and provided with inwardly projecting ratchet teeth 17. The other arm of the lever 11 is provided with a lip or portion 18 opposite the lip 16 and provided with inwardly projecting ratchet teeth 19. The teeth 17 and 19 are alternately'engageable with the teeth 10 when the lever 11 is shifted longitudinally of itself.
When it is desired to elevate the screw 8, the lever 11 is shifted longitudinally to the right, as seen in Fig. 1, so that the teeth 19 thereof engage the teeth 10 of the gear 8, and then by oscillating the lever up and down, the gear 8 will be rotated step-bystep, to rotate the gear 6 in such a direction as to move the screw 8 upwardly. WVhen the lever moved downwardly, the teeth 19 catch the teeth 10 and rotate the gear 8 with the lever, and when the lever is raised, the teeth 19, move idly past the teeth 10 to get a new hold on the gear. 'To reverse the jack, so that the screw is lowered when the lever is oscillated, the lever is shifted to the left, as seen in Fig. 1, so that the teeth 19 are moved from the teeth 10, while the teeth 17 are brought into engagement with the teeth 10. Then, when the lever is oscillated, the gear 8 will be rotated in the opposite direction, due to the opposite arrangement of the teeth 17 relative to the teeth 19. It is therefore only necessary to shift the lever longitudinally, for reversing the jack, and it is unnecessary to make any adjustments other than this. versed without the necessity of changing pawls or other devices, and it is not necessary to reach under the vehicle or object which is being jacked to reverse the jack. The jack can be conveniently operated in either direction.
In the variation illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the outstanding rim 9 of the gear 8 has external ratchet teeth 10 and internal ratchet teeth 10", and the horizontally projectin'g lever 11 has a slotted portion 12 engaging the pintle 7 and held thereon by the washer 1d. The lever 11 has a portion 16 within the rim 9 and provided with ratchet teeth 17 coiiperable with the ratchet teeth 10". Said lever 11 has a port-ion 18 outside of the rim 9 and provided'with ratchet teeth 19 eooperable'with the ratchet teeth 10. The ratchet teeth 10 and 10 are in reversed arrangement, which is also true of the ratchet teeth 17 and 19. When the lever 11 is shifted longitudinally in one direction, the teeth 19 are engageable with the teeth 10 for rotating the gears in one direction to raise the screw, and when the lever is shifted longitudinally in the opposite direction, the teeth 17 are engageable with the teeth 10 for rotating the gears in the opposite direction so that the screw is lowered.

1. In a jack, a standard, a screw movable vertically relative thereto, a nut threaded upon the screw and seating upon the standard, said nut having a gear, the standard having an outstanding pintle, a gear rotatable upon the pintle and meshing with the aforesaid gear, and a lever fulcrumed and slidable longitudinally upon said pintle, the lever having portions alternately engageable with the second mentioned gear when the lever is shifted longitudinally, in order that the second mentioned gear can be rotated in either direction when the lever is oscillated.
In a jack, a standard, a screw movable vertically relative thereto, a gear threaded upon the screw and seating upon the stand ard, the standard having an outstanding pintle, a gear rotatable upon the pintle and meshing with the aforesaid gear, the second mentioned gear having an outstanding rim provided with teeth, and a lever having a longitudinal slot engaging the pintle, the lever having teeth alternately engageable with the aforesaid teeth when the lever is shifted longitudinally, whereby the second mentioned gear can be rotated in either direction by the oscillation of the lever.
