To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. KERN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 8A2 Ellicott Square, Buffalo, New York, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im1' )rovements in Towel-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to towel dispensers.

One object is to provide a simple, strong and easily manufactured device designed to support a roll of toweling material in such a manner as to dispense towels of definite length.

Another object resides in the provision of a towel dispensing device having a roll support that may be used with any form of holder, and embodying means to rotatably support a roll of toweling material so that towels of definite length be dispensed and also embodying means whereby the roll of toweling material is prevented from slipping on the supporting means during opera tion of the same. I

A still further object resides in the provision of a towel dispenser embodying means adapted to rotatably support the toweling material in such manner that towels of definite length may be dispensed under the influence of a pull of the web of toweling material to thereby rotate the roll of toweling material and the supporting means therefor to a given degree in combination with means to automatically return the supported roll of toweling material to normal position.

Vith the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it'beingv understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the'spirit or sacrifi 0- ing any of theadvantages of the invention.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the character 1 indicates a shaft provided with suitable end bearings 2 and 3. These bearings permit the shaft to be readily introduced into and easily removed from the slots 4 at each end of the holder 5, in which slots the shaft is held against rotation. Any suitable form of holder may be employed.

A pin 6 extends laterally from the said shaft, being located at a suitable point between the ends of the shaft.

A plate 7 is rotatably mounted on the shaft and preferably made of sheet metal and provided with slots 8 adjacent the ends of said plate. The metal of the plate 7 on the opposite sides of each slot 8 is bent in opposite directions, as indicated at 9 and 10, to provide hearings to receive the shaft 1. At the center of the said plate is an elongated aperture 11 having a notch 12 therein.

A coiled spring 13 surrounds the shaft 1, one of its ends being attached to said shaft, as indicated at 14, its other end being attached to the plate 7, as indicated at 15. Suitable washers 16 are interposed between the holder 5 and the plate 7 to prevent friction between the parts.

In practice, the roll of toweling material is mounted on the plate 7, against slipping thereon, and the plate lies normally in contact with the pin 6 on the shaft 1. A pull on the free end of the toweling material causes the roll of paper and the said plate to rotate together, the plate moving away from the pin 6 on the shaft 1 against the tension of the spring 13, the notch 12 in the plate 7 permittirig the plate'to clear the pin 6 and continue to rotate untilthe opposite side of the plate contacts with the pin 6 on the shaft 1, resulting in substantially a complete revolution of said plate. At this point the plate is at the limit of its rotary movement and a predetermined length of toweling is unwound from the roll and may be disconnected from the web. Upon disconnection of the towel of predetermined length, the spring 13 will return the plate and the roll of paper to normal position, the notch 17 permitting the plate to clear the pin 6 on the shaft 1. The device is then in position for another operation as describedabove.

What I claim is In a towel dispensing device, a holder, a shaft fixedly mounted in said holder, a

- stamped sheet metal plate rotatably mounted on said shaft and adapted to support a roll of toweling material, said platehaving a central aperture with a notch leading into said aperture, a pin on the shaft, one side of said plate being normally in contact with one side of said pin, means for rotating said plate, the said notch permitting the pin to clear the said plate and permit the said plate to rotate until the opposite side of the plate Copies of this patent maybe obtained for contacts with the other side of said pin, thereby permitting a single revolution of said plate and allowing a predetermined length of toweling to be unwound from said roll, a spring having one end attached to said shaft and its other end attached to the said plate, whereby the plate is returned to its normal position upon the severing of the unwound material from the roll.
