Be it known that I, ANDREW LAITSCH, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Pittsburgh. in the County of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ingot- Molds, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to inprovements in ingot molds.
The object of my invention is to prevent breakage in ingot molds provided with What is called a hot head. Heretofore, so far as I am aware nolds of this type Were provided with. at the upper end, a portion the diameter ot' which was greatly in excess of the lower portion and enabled the use of what is called a hot head; that is, a chamber for the reception of fuel for the purpose ot' maintaining a high temperature at that portion of the ingot nold which is called the sink head. The portion of the mold immediately below this extended upper portion was nuch thinner than the remaining 'part of the mold and When it was necessary described` reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which:

Referring to said drawings, 1 is a mold having lugs 2 cast thereon, preferably some distance below the thinnest portion of the mold. The said mold may be provided With a rib 3, extending between said lugs. The upper end of said mold is surrounded by a detachable casting 4, which constitutes the outer wall of a fuel chamber 5. The upper end of said mold is provided With an extension 6, formed of refractory material, the outer Wall of said extension serving as the inner wall of the chamber 5. The outer wall of the casting 4 is provided with orifices 7 Specification of Letters Patent.

Combustion of the fuel contained in the chamber maintains a high temperature at a point coincident with the portion called the sink head,,and prevents what is terned piping in the ingot formed in the mold. Frequent breakage occurs in the use of the ordinary mold of this type, in 'releasing the ingot therefrom, and this breakage occurs at the thinnest portion of the ingot moldimmediately below the enlarged top portion thereof. By making the upper end of the mold detachable, I avoid the danger of breakage, and avoid also the danger of having to chisel or remove overfiow metal which frequently occurs in the ordinary type of hot head molds.
Over the upper end of the mold, I preferably insert a ring 9, formed of any nonconducting material, such as magnesium or asbestos fiber.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A mold tapering toward the top and thinner at the upper end than at the lower end having lugs near the uppcr end, in conbination with an auxiliary casting, con stituting a combustion chamber surrounding the upper end of said mold, in conbination with an extension to said mold formed of refractory material, the said space between the said extension and the walls of said auxiliary; casting torning a chamber for the reception of fueL for the purpose of maintaining a high temperature at the upper end of the mold, whereby piping is prevented.
