TAN PUCHALSKI AND PAT/VEL KIELKGWICZ, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SCRUBBING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 5, 1191*?.
Application led March 24, 1917. Serial No. 157,129.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JAN PUCHALSKI and liwnn lmmrowioz, citizens of Russia, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Scrubbing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
rl'his invention relates to scrubbing devices and has special reference to a combined scrubber and mop.
@ne important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
second important object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which can be readily changed to perform either scrubbing or mopping 0perations.
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved changeable scrubbing and mopping device wherein means of an improved character are used for wringing excess moisture from the mop portion when desired.
lVith the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device, a part of the handle being broken away to show the remainder more clearly, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal median section through a portion of the device, parts being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device partly broken away.
Fig. 4: is a front view of the device partly broken away.
Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a detail section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there has been provided a frame which consists of a pair of bars having parallel portions 10, the bars being bent toward each other at their upper and rear ends as at 11 and then bent again into parallelism as at 12 so that the lower end 13 of a handle may be received between the bar portions 12 and there secured by suitable bolts 14. Connecting the lower and forward ends of the portions 10 are transverse inverted U- shaped members 15 the logs of which are securely riveted to the bars l0, said legs projecting downward below these bars and carrying on their lower ends inverted U- shaped frame members 16 provided at the ends of their legs with feet 17 to which are secured the backs of brushes 18. Journaled between the lower ends of the bar portions 10 and the frame members 16 are rollers 19 which are preferably covered with compressible rubber sleeves 20, the rollers being located so close together' that the sleeves act as wringer elements as will be hereinafter set forth. Journaled between the upper ends of the portions 10 is a shaft 21 and on one end of this shaft is a crank 22 having a handle 23. Between the bar portions 10 the shaft 21 is provided with a pair of* grooved wheels 2li to which are fastened the upper ends of iiexible bands 25. These bands have their lower ends secured to a cross bar 26 provided with guide members 27 at its ends, the guide members fitting over the bar portions 10 so that the cross bar may be slid up and down these portions 10. Now, it will be obvious that by rotating the handle 23 the bands '25 are wound on the pulleys 2tlso that the cross bar 26 will be pulled upward, it being understood that the cross bar, at the beginning of the winding operation is in its lowered position, as shown in Fig. 3.
Secured to the cross bar 26 is a bar 28 which passes between the folds of a mop 29 formed of a plurality of endless layers of suitable fabric. This mop 29 is led between the wringer rollers so that when the handle 23 is rotated in the proper direction and the cross bar 26 drawn upward, excess moisture in the mop, caused by dipping the same into water or a detergent solution, will be eX- pelled.
Now, if the cross bar 26 is in its upper position and the handle is rotated so as to loosen or unwind the bands 25 provision must be made for the passage of the mop downward between the rollers 19 and to this end one of the roller shafts as 30 has fixed on one end a sprocket wheel 31 which is connected by means of a sprocket chain 32 with the sprocket wheel 33 fixed on the shaft 21. Now by this means one of the rollers 19 will be positively rotated by the rotation of the shaft 21 and in a direction 19 will be positively driven by the chain and sprocket connection while the other roller will be frictionally driven. Thus when the bands Q5 are wound up on their grooved pulleys 24; the rollers 19 will be rotated in such direction as to assist in the passage of the mop 29 upward between the rollers while, when the handle 23 is rotated to unwind the bands 25, the rotation of the'rollers 19 will pull the mop downward between them.
ln using the device when it is desired simply to perform the operation of scrubbing, the handle 23 is rotated to draw the mop upward and the brushes 18 can then be used as an ordinary handled brush is used. lf it is desired to use the mop the handle .23 is rotated to cause the mop to pass downward between the rollers 19. The mop may then be dipped in water or a de tergent solution and either left wet or wrung out by proper rotation of the handle 23, being again lowered after the wringing operation and the device is then used with the lower part of the mop held beneath one or the other of the brushes 1S as shown in l.
There has thus been provided a. simple and eliicient device of the kind described and' for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. it is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is Y 1. The combination with a frame, of spaced mop applying means secured beneath said'frame, wringing rollers positioned on said frame above and between said means, a mop extending between said wringing rollers and movable therebetween, the lower end of said mop being arranged for position beneath eitherv of said means and for position above and between said means,
manually operable means for moving said mop up and down between the wringing rollers, a handle 0n said frame including spaced parallel bars, a cross bar slidable on the handle bars and having the upper end of the mop attached thereto, and meansv to move said cross bar upward on said handle bars.
2. The combination with a frame, of spaced mop applying means secured beneath said frame, wringing rollers positioned on said frame above and between said means, a mop extending between said wringing rollers and movable therebetween, the lower end of said mop being arranged for position beneathv either of said means and for posi# tion above and between said means, manually operable means for moving said mop up and down between the wringing rollers, a handle on said frame including spaced aarallel bars, a cross bar slidable on the handle bars and having the upper end of the mop attached thereto, means to move said cross bar upward on said handle bars, said means comprising a shaft extending between said handle bars, a handled crank on said shaft, winding drums fixed on said shaft, and flexible connections between said drums and cross bars.
3. In a device of the kind described, a frame, spaced handle bars secured to said frame and projecting upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, spaced mop applying means connected beneath and extending transversely of said frame, wringer rollers liournaled in said frame, one of said rollers being provided with a sprocket, a. cross bar slidable on the rear ends of the handle bars, a mop connected to said cross bar and extending beneath said wringer rollers, a shaft gournaled at the Lipper ends of said tures.
