CLAUS ALEXANDERSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HORSE-BRUSHING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,902, dated December 18, 1888.
Application filed June 25, 1888. Serial No. 278,134. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLAUS ALEXANDERSON, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Brushing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, especially, to brushes employed for brushing and cleaning animals-such as horses and cattleand has for its object the production of a device wherein many of the parts heretofore necessary in articles of this class may be dispensed with, rendering the brush much cheaper and more effective in operation than those heretofore employed.
The invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of myhand-power horse-brushing machine. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of brush with comb in position. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the device, showing the relative arrangement of the brush and the comb.
The frame carrying the parts is composed of a light metal strip or plate, A, the upper ends of which are bent at nearly right angles to form journals or bearings B B for the blush-carrying spindle or axle, while the lower end is bent to form a loop, C. Between the arms which form the loop C is placed a grooved wheel or pulley, D, having its bearing in the said arms. To the face plates of the metal frame is connected the small grooved rollers or pulleys a, a (0 ,1), 0, and (1. Both ends of the spindle carrying the rotating brush are also provided with fixed grooved pulleys E. An endless cord, F, passes under the grooved wheel D, one part of which extends upward along one arm of the loop of the frame and over the small roller (1? and under the pulley a, and from thence over the fixed grooved pulley at that end of the brush and back again under the roller a across the opening of the loop, and from thence under the roller I), up and over the pulley at the opposite end of the rotating brush and back again over the roller 0, and from thence down the rear edge of that arm of the loop to the grooved wheel I).
The machine is driven by handpower through the medium of the crank-arm S, applied to the end of the spindle or axle of the grooved wheel D upon. both sides, and so as to make the crank interchangeable for the right or left hand of the operator.
A suitable curved or bent plate, II, is riveted to the base of the loop, provided with sustaining and steadying braces, also riveted to the arm of the loop 0.
Over the horizontal arms of the frame is fixed a comb, I, which covers the cords and pulleys and projects a little distance forward or beyond the periphery of the rotating brush to lift the hair of the animal for the brush to act upon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with a rotating brush suitably mounted upon a frame and operated by a hand-wheel over intermediate pulleys by means of an endless cord, of a comb fixed to the frame, the teeth of which are a little in advance of the periphery of the brush, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
OLAUS ALEXANDERSON.
