IINiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND S"ORCH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN MESS, OF SAME PLAGE.
MACHINE FOR SMOOTHING LEATHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,821, dated February 12, 1889. Application filed November 20, 1883. Serial No. 291,341. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern; f Be it known that I, FERDINAND STORCH, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain i new and useful Improvements in Machines for Smoothing; Leather, of which the following is a specification.
The obj ectof my invention is to provide a new and improved machine of simple con.-
struction for smoothing leather effectively and rapidly.
The invention consists in the combination, with a roller having a right and left hand screw-thread, of a rubber roller mounted to I 5 move toward and from the threaded roller, a
trough below the rubber roller, and a scraper on said trough resting on the said roller.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of my improved leather-smoothing machine, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, parts being broken out. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-seetional view of parts on the line :r a, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corres pondin g parts.
The shafts A and I are supported parallel with each other by the end standards, the shaft A being above the shaft B. 011 the upper shaft, A, a steel roller, A, is mounted, which is covered with bronze to prevent rusting. This roller is provided with a right and left hand raised screw-thread, D, extending from the center to the ends. A belt-pulley,v E, is rigidly mounted on one end of the shaft A. The shaft 3 carries a rubber roller, F, and below the same a trough, G, is provided for catching the water pressed from the leather passing through the machine, said trough being supported by bars G from the standards 0. The trough is provided with a i scraper, H, the edge of which is pressed upon the surface of the rubber roller F. The shaft B of the roller F is journa'led in the journal-boxes J, mounted to slide vertically between the guides C on the end standards, C. Said journal-boxes rest upon the cam-levers K, rigidly mounted on the ends of a rock-shaft, L, journaled in the end standards, C, and provided with cranks L, which are connected by rods M with the treadle M.
On the end of the shaft B a Worm-wheel, N, 5 5 is mounted, which can engage a worm, N, on one end of which is mounted a bevelcogwheel, 0, engaging a bevel cog-wheel, O, on one end of the shaft A. A sprocket-wheel, P, on the shaft drives a chain, P, which in turn drives a roller, R, over which and a like roller, R, an endless belt, S, passes for carrying off the smoothed leather.
The wet or moistened leather is placed upon the table IV and upon the roller E, which is now lowered, and a short distance from the roller A. The treadle M is then pressed down, whereby the .roller F is raised and the wormwheel N engaged with the worm N. Both rollers are now rotated, and the leather is drawn in between them and is smoothed by the right and left hand screw-threads D. The water pressed out of the leather then accumulates in the trough Gandis drawn off through the cock G The roller F is then lowered, a fresh piece of leather inserted, and the above operation is repeated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent- In a machine for smoothing leather, the So combination, with the threaded roller A, of the rubber roller F, the vertically-adjustable boxes .I, the rock-shaft L, the cams K on the same, the cranks L on said shaft L, the connecting-rods M, and the treadle M, substan tially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FERDINAND STORCH.
