Description

il? FICE" CLARENCE BESA'W, 0F HAMMOND, NEW YORK.
CURTAIN -HANGEIEL Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 5, 191 7 Application filed August 30, 1916. Serial No. 117,760.
T0 all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, CLARENCE BnsAw, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of St. Lawrence, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Curtain-Hanger; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a curtain pole and supporting means therefor, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel fea tures of construction whereby it can Abe readily applied to a window casing without marring or injuring the same.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a curtain hanger which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be adjusted to fit different sizes of window casings, ywhich can be. easily placed in position or removed therefrom, without injuring the window casing, and which will support the curtain in proper position.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanyingdrawing, in Which:-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a curtain pole constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same as applied to a window casing.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the saine.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of one end of the curtain pole, portions being broken away and shown in section.
Fig. fl is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a slight modification.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the
numeral l designates a curtain pole which is of a proper length to extend across the front of a window casing A, and of a suitable size to receive the usual rings of a curtain. The ends of the pole l are threaded to receive the knobs 3 which are adjustable thereon, the inner ends of the knobs bearing againstsquare outer faces 4in of blocks 4L which are slidable upon the curtain pole. These blocks 4 yare formed with openings which loosely receive the curtain pole, and are enlarged at their inner ends where they terminate in the square faces 4b, said faces being of a suiiiciently extended area to engage the edges of the curtains and hold them in proper position.
Projecting rearwardly from each of the blocks 4L is an outwardly and inwardly curved arm 5, said arms terminating in elongated vertical jaws 6 which are adapted to engage the sides of the window casing A. The gripping faces of the jaws 6 are elongated so as to extend over a comparatively large area, and are preferably rounded so that there will be no sharp corners t0 bite into the window casing and permanently deface the same. The curved arms 5 may either be integral with the blocks 4:, as shown by Fig. l, or pivotally connected to the blocks and engaged by strong springs 7, as indicated by Fig. A, said springs serving to hold the jaws in position, and being of assistance when mounting the device upon the window casing.
In order to apply the curtain hanger to the window casing, the blocks i are assembled upon the pole 1 and the jaws 6 placed in engagement with the sides of the window casing. The knobs 3 are ,then screwed tightly against the blocks 4, thereby sliding the same inwardly upon the curtain pole and causing the jaws 6 to forcibly grip the window casing. Owing to the fact that the jaws are elongated vertically and cover an lextended area they may be caused to grip the window casing with suliicient force to hold the device in position and support the curtain, without danger of permanently marring or injuring the window casing. l/Vhere the arms 5 are pivoted to the blocks, the springs 7 will assist in holding the device in position while tightening the knobs 3, although before the knobs are iinally screwed home, the arms 5 preferably engage shoulders 8, thereby obtaining a rigid clamping action when the device is finally mounted in position.
Having thus described the invention,r
` what I claim 'as new and desire to secure by knobs threaded upon the ends of the our tain pole and engaging the'rounded outer ends of the blocks, horizontally disposed inwardly curved arms projecting rearwardly from the blocks, and vertically elongated jaws carried by the endsof the curved arms Y for engagement with the sides of a window casing to support the polein operative position.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for 2. A curtain hanger including a pole, blocks .applied to the ends of the pole, one of the blocks being slidable thereon, means for forcibly moving the said Vslidable block t0- yward the opposite block, rearwardly projecting arms pivotally connected to the blocks, vertically elongated jaws carried by the arms and adapted to engage opposite sides of a. window casing, and springs act- Y ing upon the jaws tol hold them in operative position. l Y
' ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Y CLARENCE unitsiiw.
