nENTAI. DIE-PUNCH.
`Specification of Letters IPatent.
Patented June 5, 1917.
`Application,tiled February 8, 1917. Serial No. 147,4{J:'7.A
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, AXEL EDMUND STIG- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of 262 Fiftyirst street, in theborough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, and CHARLES BEGH- ToLD, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of 41:34 Himrod street,in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Die-Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to punches and dies and especially to that class wherein the receiving plate contains a die beneath 'the plunger and is shiftable.
One advantage of this invention is to provide a punch wherein the plunger presses a cut piece of metal against a nameplate die in the same operation in which it cuts said piece.
Another advantage is to have a shiftable receiving plate by the shifting of which, pieces cut by the plunger may be immediately removed.
Another advantage is to have the nameplate die in the receiving plate to facilitate its removal or replacement.
Another advantage is to have a shiftable receiving plate which returns to normal position upon releasing the same.
Another advantage is to have a stripping plate above the die to remove the stock from the plunger.
Further advantages and possibilities will become apparent as the specification proceeds. e
With the aforesaid advantages in view, the invention comprises the improvements hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, the same letter or numeral refers to the same parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a top view of an apparatus embodying this invention with the punch frame and plunger omitted. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a part of Fig. 1. Fig, 3 is -a vertical central sectional view of the left half of Fig. 1 when in position for operation. Fig. 4 is a vertical, longitudinal secdoneby cutting or stamping out pieces of soft metal as 9 of the desired shape and then placing they same in a mold into which iiuid rubber or similar material vwas to be" poured.
If it was desired to have the name of the `maker appear in the linal product, it has heretofore been necessary to previously stamp this into the piece of soft metal by a separate operation, sometimes by a loose die.
Upon hardeningl of the rubber, as 12 on Fig. 5, the same was removed from the mold and the piece of formed metal 9 picked out. This latter operation would provide a hollow chamber in the rubber 9.
It is intended to combine two steps in the above process by means of the present invention, namely the cutting out of the metal and the stamping of the name thereon.
A sheet of soft metal 9 is placed in posil tion on ring die 2 and plunger 13 in frame 14 caused to descend. This will primarily cut a piece of the metal 9 of the shape shown in Fig. 5, and secondly, press the same down through 'space e vupon die 3.
Plunger 13, when being withdrawn from space e, would ordinarily lift the sheet 9 from die 2, and to prevent this, stripping plate 4 has been provided.
If receiving plate 1 is then pushed to the position indicated at 1', the metal 9 and die 3 will assume the position indicated at 3 and 9. The screw 10 is a backstop for 9, 'to positively carry 9 out to the dotted position, where the meta-l is easily picked oif.
The receiving plate, which is slidably guided inbase plate 5 has an arm 8 to which is attached spring 6, the latter being secured to screw 7 lin 5. This will tend plate 1 and arm 8 to return to normal position 'if released when first drawn to position 1 and 8', plate 1 being rearwardly limited in movement by screw 11.
. The counterbored seat c receives name die 3, and contains aperture to facilitate removal or exchange of the die. The pin a is provided to make the die 3 fit in but one position, and aids in securing the saine in plate 1.
When the `metal 9 comes from plate 1 ,it is indented by the die 3 on the underside, but When 9 is pressed into soft receptive material as at 12in Fig. 6, the final kproduct is a name in relief, shoWnin cross section.
Various modiications and -uses of this invention are possible Within its scope and spirit other than the specific .use hereindescribed.
.Having thus fully described .our invention, We claim 1. A punch including a slidable receiving plate arrangedrto reciprocate in a baseplate, a rearward limit .upon said plateadapted to abut saidbase plate, andaydie mounted upon the same, a stop behind said die adapted kto retain in position Aproducts pressed upon said die during the reciprocation of said slidable plate, a reciprocating die adapted to coperate` with .thedie upon said receivdie.
2. A `punch including in combination a base plate housing a slidable plate, a die lmounted upon said slidable plate, a ring die mounted across said plate uponsaid base plate, a reciprocating die adapted to pass through said ring die and coperate With the die upon saidslidable plate, and .resilient means :retaining'said slidable plate and 'the die Ithereupon `mounted in operative relation with .said ,reciprocating die.
