BURGLAR-ALARM AND LA'r'oH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1917.
Application filed November 6, 1916. 3 Serial No. 129,778.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS J. BRUNE, V a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Algiers, in the parish of Orleans and 5 State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar- Alarms and Latches, of whichthe following is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in burglar alarms and the like, having as its primary object the provision of a novel and effective type of burglar alarm for detachable association with windows, doors and the like to warn against unauthorized entrance by intruders.
Another object of my invention is to provide an alarm of the class described which may be readily attached to any existing sliding window or sliding door without altering the construction of the door or window to which the device is applied.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which will both lock the window and deliver an alarm, the device permitting a window to be raised-slightly but at the same time limiting the distance to which the same may be raised, and when repeated attempts are made to raise the window a succession of alarms is given.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a latch and alarm actuating device of the class described which may be used in connection with any type of alarm either mechanical or electrical.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved burglar alarm and window latch will appear from the following detailed description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, partly broken away showing a window frame and sashes and my invention applied in opera- 45 tive position;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line- 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the catch member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, designates the window sill, 11 one of the side portions of a window frame and 12 a window sash slidable in said.
The locking device comprises a circular plate 13 rotatably mounted on a screw 14, said screw'being driven into the side member 11 as best shown in Figs. 1' and 2. A pair of lugs 15 and 15 are carried by the plate 13,
said lugs'extending from the exposed face thereof to form guides for a sliding bolt 16', said bolt 16 having a lateral tapered enlargement 17 on one free end thereof. A coil spring 18 encircles the bolt 16, said coil spring being interposed between the guide- 15 and a pin 19 carried by said bolt whereby To maintain the bolt 16 against the action of the spring 18 I provide a hook 20 ofi'set at 21 and pivotally mounted on the screw 14 as indicated at 22 in Fig. 2. 1
The hook 20 is arranged above the bolt16 when the plate is applied in operative position, said hook 20 being moved into engagement with the free end of the bolt to maintain the same against movement. A portion of the peripheral edge of the to normally tend to maintain the bolt in the outermost position.
plate 13 is recessed as at 23 to accommodate the free end of a stop-block 24, said block being secured to the side 11 of the window frame by means of screws 25 or the like. A catch member 26 is carried by the sash and secured thereto by means of a screw or the like, said catch member having a tapered extension 27 to engage the tapered extension 17 on the bolt to maintain the window against upward movement.
A lug 28 extends radially from the plat 13, said lug being formed with an aperture 29 to receive the free end of a rod, cable or the like-30, the upper free end of the cable being connected to the hammer 31 of a bell 32.
To look the window the bolt is permitted to assume the position shown in Fig. l and when an attempt is made to raise the window the catch member 26 will engage with the bolt, partially rotating the plate. This movement will actuate the hammer 31 of the bell 32 giving an alarm, When the block suchchanges may be made in said 'struc- 2.0 cure by'Letters Patent, 1s:-
normal closed position. The device may be readily attached to any of the existing types of window frames "ov'ithoutaltering the construction of the Window frame or sash;
The device will also be readily applicable for use in connection with sliding doors and the like,
' From the above description taken in. con- I nection, with the accompanying drawings,
ture as do not departfrom the spirit and scope'of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se- 1. In a window catch and alarm, the combinationwith a Window frame and a sash slidablei therein, of a catch. member carried by he sash, a plate rotatably mounted on the frame, a; lever sli'da'bly carried by the plate and having a lateral lug to engage the catch member, said lever being connected to ee's nee,
an alarm, and a hook carried by the plate to retain the lever, at times, from engagement withthe catch. i
2. In a window latch and alarm, the combination with a window frame and a sash slidable therein, of a plate rotatably mounted on said frame, means to limit the movement of said plate, a spring actuated arm diametrically arranged on said plate, said arm having a lateral extension on the free end thereof, said plate being connected with an alarm device, a hook for restraining said slidable member, and a catch member on the window sash to engage said slidable member.
.3. In a window latch and alarm, the combination with a Window frame and sash, of a plate rotatably mounted in the frame,
a sliding bolt carried by the plate, a spring to maintain the bolt in outermost position,
a hook to retain thebolt, a catch member to engage one free end of the bolt, and an alarm connected with said plate to be actuated by rotation of the same.
In testimony whereof, 'I aflix my signature hereto-v LOUIS J. BRUNE.
