SILO CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2%), 15917.
Application filed January 22, 1915. Serial No. 3,682.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Des Moines, county of Polk, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silo Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in silo constructions, and has for its object the provision of a construction of this character which is capable of economical manufacture, and is highly eflicient in use.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in Figure l is a rear view of a silo construction embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, an enlarged perspective view of one of the blocks or stave members employed in the construction, I
Fig. 3, a different perspective view of the same,
Fig. 4, an enlarged horizontal section taken through a portion of the walls of said construction,
Fig. 5, an enlarged vertical section taken through a portion of the walls of said construction,
Fig. 6, an enlarged vertical section illustrating a dowel connection employed in the construction,
Fig. 7 a view illustrating the positions assumed by blocks or stave members employed in the construction when a larger construction is made, and
Fig. 8, a similar view when a smaller construction is made.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a substantially cylindrical hollow body 9, the side walls of which are made up of a plurality of substantially rectangular blocks or stave members 10, each of said blocks being provided at its top with a groove 11 and at its bottom with a tongue 12 fitting within said groove, the adjoining edges of said blocks being secured together by mortar in the usual manner. The outer adjoining corner edges of each of the blocks 10 is rounded as at 13 to facilitate the rolling thereof on each other, as indicated in 'Fig. 7, and the sides of said blocks are recessed at 14: to provid a space for the reception of mortar in building, and the inner corner edges of the blocks are arranged to pivot upon each other when the blocks are employed in making a smaller construction, as illustrated in Fig. 8. At each side of each end, each of the blocks 10 is provided with a triangular recess or slot '15 positioned in the rounded portion 13 thereof and arranged to register with the corresponding slot or recess in the adjacent member 10 above or below. At each side, intermediate the ends, each of the blocks 10 is provided with a substantially triangular recess 16 positioned to register with the corresponding recesses 15 so as to form there with a substantially diamond shaped pocket adapted to receive a substantially diamond shaped dowel 17, as indicated in the drawmgs.
In building the silo, the first row of blocks or stave members is set upon a suitable foundation, every other one, however, being a half block or stave so as to cause overlapping of the joints of the staves, and thus breaking of the horizontal joints therebetween. The arrangement is such that the recesses 15, in the upper corners of the half blocks or staves register with the recesses 16 in the sides of the adjoining full blocks or staves, thus forming pockets into which the dowel members 17 may be dropped. Then the different joints are filled with mortar and the blocks or stave members set on top of the half blocks or stave members, completely inclosing the dowel members in a pocket and forming a rigid and secure connection between the different blocks or stave members. Then the full blocks or stave members are set in the spaces between the last set of blocks or stave members in the same manner until the desired height is reached when half blocks or stave members are again employed to provide an even top to the side walls. By rounding the outer corner edges 13 of the diflerent blocks or stave members, and by locating the recesses in or adjacent the rounded outer corners 13, the construction of different sized silos is facilitated.
After the Walls have thus been built up, they are reinforced by bands or hoops 18 and a suitable cover 19 is placed thereon thus completing the construction, it being understood, of course, that sultable doors are provided for access to the interior of the silo in my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself-of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A curvilinear construction having side walls made up of separate members set edge to edge, adjoining outer corner edges of said members being conveXly rounded, and fastening means connecting said edges substantially as described.
2. A curvilinear construction having side walls made up of separate members set edge to edge, adjoining corner edges of said members being convexly rounded, there being registering recesses in said members adjacent said rounded edges; and dowels in said recesses, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, a wall formed of a plurality of separate members arranged edge to edge, the outer portion of the adjoining corner edges of said members being c onvexly rounded and the inner portion being concavely rounded, there being registering recesses in the conveXly rounded portions, and dowels in said recesses, substantially as described.
l. In a device of the class described, a wall formed of a plurality of separate members arranged edge to edge, the outer portion of the adjoining corner edges of said members being conveXly rounded and the inner portion being concavely rounded, there being registering recesses in the convexly rounded portions, dowels in said recesses, and adhesive material securing said dowels in said recesses, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, a wall formed'of a plurality of separate members arranged edge to edge, the outer por tion of the vertical edges of all of said members being conveXly rounded and the inner portions of said edges being concavely rounded, the outer portions of the horizontal edges being fiat and the inner portions thereof being of tongue and groove construction, there being registering recesses in the outer portions of said edges, and dowels in said recesses, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, a wall formed of a plurality of separate members ar 'anged edge to edge, the outer portion of the vertical edges of all of said members being conveXly rounded and the inner portions of said edges being concavely rounded, the outer portions of the horizontal edges being flat and the inner portions thereof being of tongue and groove construction, there being registering recesses I in the outer portions of said edges, dowelsin said recesses, and adhesive material securing said dowels in said recesses, substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J. PERKINS.
