Description
` L, HULL.
Lamp Extension Supporter.
Patented 1an. i6, i872.
LIVERUS HULL, OF CHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN LAMP-EXTENSION SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,767, dated January 416, 1872.
To allpersous to whom these presents may come:
Be it known that I, LIvERUs HULL, of Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or Improved Lamp-Extension Supporter or Apparatus 5 and do hereby declare the saine to be fully described in the following specication and represented in the accompanyingdrawing, of which- Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of it.
In such drawing, A is an inverted arched bar formed as shown, and provided at its middle with a projecting screw, a., for the support of a kerosene or other lamp, which, when in use, is to be supposed to be screwed upon such projection. From the ends of the said arched bar two rods, B B, are extended parallel to each other, and through friction-clamps G C, and into two tubes, D D, the said friction-clamps being fastened to the lower ends of such tubes, and such tubes at their upper ends being connected to a` cross-bar, E, furnished at its iniddle with a hook, b, to carry a smoke bell, and and also' with an eye, c, for supporting the apparatusyon a hook extending from the ceiling or other proper part of an apartment. Grooved Wheelsd d, arranged in the bar E, and with respect to the tubes D D in manner as shown, are to revolve freely within the bar and support two chains, F F, which, fastened to the upper ends of the rods B B, extend over the superiory halves of the wheels and down, and are fastened to two balance-weights, G G, arranged to slide freely'on the tubes D D. Each weight has a tubular sleeve, e, fastened to its side or cast in one piece with the weight, and arranged as shown, the sleeve receiving one ofthe tubes, all being arranged in other respects as shown in the drawing.
The friction-clamps co-operating with the balance-weights serve to adjust the balance of the lamp and the support-bar and its rods, as the oil in the 'lamp may be diminished or increased. Besides being useful t0 overcome the tendencyY of the weights to raise the lamp-supporter as the oil may be consumed, the friction-clamps answer to ei'ectually clamp the supporter when down-in its lowest or other position, so as to prevent it from being drawn up accidentally by the weights after the oil may have been more or less consumed.
I claim as my invention.-
The lamp-supportin g bar A, its rods'B B, the cross-head or bell-sustainer E "and its tubes D D, the friction-clamps C C and the chains F F, wheels d d and weights G G, combined and arranged in manner substantially as explained and represented.
LIVERUS HULL.
