DRINKING-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1917.
Applieation fileafiune 23,1916. serial No. 105,482. v
To all whom t may concern? Be it known that we, FRANK GLAsNnR and GEORGE ELLIsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Hinton, in the county of Plymouth and Stateof Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drinking-k Cups, of which the following is a speciication.
The present invention relates to an improvement in `foldable sanitary drinking cups, and an object of the inventionmis to produce an article of this class which shall be extremely simple, cheap to manufacture,
as well as ornamental and whereby the cup,
when not in use, tected.
Another object of the invention is to produce a foldable Ydrinking cup which may be folded or collapsed 'to such a size as to be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user or which may be provided with a suitable cap and attached to the said pocket and occupy only a small space upon theclothing of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to produce a collapsible drinking cup wherein the cup proper is constructed of some textile water-proof material and arranged in a suitable tube having means for pro jecting the same partly from one end of the tube, and when in such projected condition the textile body will automatically move to produce a substantially cone-shaped cu It is a still further object of the invention to produce 'a foldable cup ofv this character including a textile body having spring means for normally expanding the same to a cup-shape and which is adapted to be partially folded within the tube when the cup is not in use and adapted, during the process ofsuch folding, to be subjected to a wiping process,` to remove all moisture from the cup, and still further to'provide the same with a protective casingrhaving means arranged thereon, in the nature of will be effectively proa cap, whereby the same may be effectivelyv suspended fromthe of the user.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specication and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
pocket of the clothing In the drawing: y
Figurev 1 isa perspective view of the improvement in its folded or collapsed position,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the" arrangement of parts when the textilebody is moved longitudinally of the tool to produce a drinking cup, j y,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same,
j Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the arrange ment of parts when the textilebody has been moved inwardly of the tube to collapse the same, and previouse to the turning of the body upon the tube to wring the same,
. and
i Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view showing the body partially received within the tube, as when the protective plied. w
In carryingout our improvement weemploy a tubular member l which is provided -with three angularly disposed slits 2 2 which enter from one of the ends of the tube and which terminate a suitable distance from the other end. yThe tube is further provided diametrically opposite the central slit 2,V with a slot or opening 3 extending through the entire length ofthe tube.
Within the tube` 1 we position a slidable member 4 having a projecting stud 5 which is adapted to play through the slot or opening 3 in the tube. This member 4 is round in plan and is of a length so that the same will. not be entirely withdrawn from the tube when moved in one direction. The member 4 upon its inner face has secured thereto a pair of right angularly arranged substantially V-shaped springs 6 and 7 respectively and secured to the arms of these springs is the textile body of the cup 8. By sliding the member-4 longitudinally of the tube to project the textile body through one end of the said tube,'it will be apparent that thearms of the springs 6 and 7 will yexpand and consequently moveA the .textile body to provide a cup which is approximately of a hollow yfrusto-pyramidal formation, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. It
will be noted that the slits 2 as well as the the said member 4 is brought out ofthe slotI 3 the member 4 is adapted to be rotated 'sleeve is to bel ap-` around the tube 1 so that the opposite edges of the slits as Well as the. slot 3 Will engage With the projecting portions of the textile body and so rinse the moisture therefrom. By reference to Fig. 4 it Will be noted that portions of the body Will lap upon the extethe tube l, and when the device is in this position the protective sleeve 9 is arranged over the lapped edges of the textile body and 4over the tube l, this sleeve being slit to provide the same with a cap 10 Which may be inserted over the edge of the pocket of the user.
While the body 8 has been described as of a textile nature it is to be understood that the same is to be constructed of rubberized sill: or any other suitable flexible Waterproof material.
From the above description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as Well as the advantages thereof Will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to Which such invention appertains Without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, What we claim is:
1. In a device for the purpose set forth, a tube Which is slitted from one of its ends to adjacent its other end and Which is provided Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, ID. C.
With a slot extending longitudinally therethrough and disposed diametrically opposite one of the slits, a member Within the tube having a stud normally arranged in the slot, substantially V-shaped springs arranged one at aright angle to the other and connected at their central portions to the said member, and a textile body secured to the arms of the springs and to the movable member, all as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a slitted tube, a member movable Within the tube, a textile body secured to the member, spring means connected with the member and With the body and adapted When the movable member is slid longitudinally of the tube in one direction, to permit of the expansion of the springs and to bring the textile body to cup formation, the said body adapted to be received in the slits of the tube when the movable member is moved in an opposite direction to bring the body Within the tube, said movable member being rotatable upon the tube, and a protective sleeve for the body and for the tube, and said sleeve having a spring clip. y
In testimony whereof We affix our signap tures.
