UNITE JOSIAH BURNHAM ANDERSON, OF WAKEFIELD; MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 122,694, dated January 16, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osIAH BURNHAM AN- DERSON, of Wakefield, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Gombined Envelope and Letter-Sheet; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an outline of the blank entirely unfolded and flat. Fig. 2 shows the front leaf folded overionto the back leaf of the paper, the flaps remaining unfolded. Fig. 3 shows the side and end back flaps folded into place, the stamp-flap remaining unfolded. Fig. 4 shows the address side or front of the envelope, with the stamp-flap folded down, as when the letter is ready for the post.
The same part is marked by the same letter in all the figures.
The nature of the invention consists in the peculiar manner, herein described, of combining with a letter or note sheet the flaps required to form a complete envelope for the sheet and receive the postage-stamp.
In the drawing A marks the front leaf of the sheet; B, the back leaf; 0, the stamp-flap; D, the side back flap E, the end back flap; F,
the front or address side of the letter when folded. a a shows the line of fold of the stamp flap; to b, the line of fold between the front and back leaves; 0 c, the line of fold of flap E; 0 cl and e f, the lines on which the sheet is folded previous to being closed for mailing.
The order of folding is as follows: The leaf A is folded onto leaf B flap D is then folded, and then'flap E, which is held down by mucilage in the ordinary way. Stamp-flap G is then folded over onto the address side of the letter and held there by mucilage, when the operation is completed and the letter ready for addressing and posting.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The writing-sheet A B provided with the flaps O, D, and E, which form an envelope for the sheet by being folded and fastened in the manner specified.
The above specification of my invention signed and witnessed at Wakefield, Massachusetts, this 5th day of September, A. D. 1871.
JOSIAH BURNHAM ANDERSON.
