Michigan, have invented certain new and useful, Improvements in Miter-Clamps, of
which the following is'a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in miter clamps. I i -The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved miter clamp in which all the clamping aws are simultaneously adjusted to clamp the work.
Second, to provide an improved miter clamp having these features which may be adjusted to work of different dimensions.
Third, to provide an improved miter clamp in which all the clamping members are simultaneously adjusted and in which the clamping stress is uniform on all of the clamping jaws.
Fourth, to provide an improved miter clamp which is capable of very rapid manipulation or adjustment to clamp or release the work and readily adjusted to work of different dimensions. Y j
Fifth, to provide an improved miter clamp having these advantages which is comparatively simple, economical and durable in structure.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplishthe objects of myinvention by the devices and means. described in thefollowing specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which-is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustratedin the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several. views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, thesupporting frame in the structure illustrated comprises side members 1, and end members 2 and 3.
The bed or table members 4 and 5 are mounted on the rails 6 fixed to the frame.
- The bed or table member 4: of the structure illustrated is secured in a fixed position on the rails while the bed member 5 is adjustable thereon as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. I. i To secure rigidity and facilitate adjust ment the;bed-member 5 is provided with slides 7 having dovetailed recesses 8 in their under sides engaging dovetailed portions 9 on the rails (see Fig. VII).
Set screws -10Iare' provided forsecuring the bed .member 5 in-its adjusted positions. The 'meansby which the adjustment of the bed member 5 is accomplishedwill'be described later. a
Each bed member is designed to carry a pair of clamping jaws llfiprovided with slides 12 disposed in ways-13, theways of each bed member being arranged at right angles to each other to diverge outwardly. These ways are preferably in theform of grooves or channels 14 in the upper sides of the bed members and corresponding grooves or channels 14 in the under sides of the bed members (see Fig. V). In these channels 1 1 are pivot plates 15 connected to the jaw slides 12 by means of the bolts 16 disposed through the longitudinal slots 17 The bolts are provided with sleeves 18 to prevent the clamp ng of th ja s ides When the bolts are tightened. The pivot plates 15 are narrower than the way channels 14: (see Fig. II) so as to permit a limited oscillation thereof.
The jaws are actuated from the eccentrics 19 supported on the stub shafts 20 (see Fig. V).
I provide eccentric straps 21 coacting with the eccentrics 19 and threaded eccentric rods 22 having a swivel connection 23 within the straps. These rods 22 are threaded through the arms 2 1 on the plates 15. The eccentrics 1 9 are provided with pinions 25 arranged to mesh with the actuating members 26 and 27, disposed between the pairs of pinions and provided with racks coacting therewith as clearly shown in Figs. II and III. In using the term pinions in the specification and claims I desire to be understood as contemplating segments.
The jaws having threaded connection with the rods 22 may be adjusted in their ways to accommodate work of different sizes by turning the rods which are provided with cross pins 28 at their outer ends adapted to receive the clamp 29 (see Fig. II).
The actuating members 26 and 27 are connected by the rod 30 which is'swiveled in the member 26 and has threaded connections with the rack 27 (see Fig. IV).
The connecting rod 30 is provided with a hand wheel 31 at one 'end. The actuating members 26 and 27 are supported in ways 32 and 33, respectively, on the under side of the bed members 4 and 5. -The actuating members being connected by the rod 30 are simultaneously shifted longitudinally in their ways and, owing to their meshing with the pinions 25, simultaneously actuate the eccentrics and, through the connections described, the clamping jaws. The actuating member 26 is provided with a rack 34 with which the segment 35 of the actuating lever 36 coacts, the actuating lever being mounted at 37 at one end of the machine. The rod 30 is connected to the actuating member 27 through the nut 38 secured to the member and threaded upon the rod. When it is desired to adjust-the bed member 5 the actuating members are secured to the bed members 4 and 5 by means of the pins 39 disposed through holes 40 in the bed members and engaging holes 41 in the actuating members (see Fig. VI);
\Vith the bed members and actuating members thus secured the turning of the rod 30 by means of the hand wheel 31 adjusts the bed member 5 on the rails 6 as may be desired, the bed member being, as stated, secured in its adjustedposition by means of the set screws 10. This adjustment does not afliect the clamping actuation of the jaws.
The jaws are, as stated, independently adjusted to accommodate different sizes of work and to insure accuracy in adjustment the bed members are provided with pairs of scales 42 for each clamp disposed one at each side of the ways 13 and provided with scale indicia for the arms of the angled clamping members.
The scale numerals have been omitted from the accompanying drawing as such scale indicia will be readily understood and applied.
l/Vith the parts arranged as I have illustrated and described I provide a machine which is capable of very rapid manipula tion to clamp up or release the work and one in which the clamping stress on each of the clamp members is uniform and,
further, one which may be usted to work of varying sizes. The structure is simple and economical in its parts and very strong and durable.
I have notattempted to illustrate or describe various modifications which I contemplate as being desirable for certain adaptations of my invention as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a miter clamp, the combination of a frame provided with bed rails, a pair of bed members one of which is mounted 011 said rails for adjustment relative to the other, each bed member being provided with outwardly diverging jaw ways disposed at right angles to each other and comprising channels in the upper and under sides of said bed members, there being slots longitudinally of said channels, actuating members pro vided with double racks, ways for said actuating members disposed longitudinally of said bed members and centrally between their said jaw ways, a connecting rod for said actuating members having a swivel connection with one and a threaded connection with the other, means for detachably securing said actuating members to said bed members so that the adjustable bed member may be adjusted by the rotation of said connecting rod, means for securing said adjustable bed member in its adjusted positions on said rails, an actuating lever provided with a segment, one of said actuating members having a rack coacting with said segment, eccentrics disposed on said bed members at the sides of said actuating members and provided with eccentric straps and with pinions coacting with said double racks thereof, angled clamping jaws disposed in the upper channels of said jaw ways, pivot plates disposed in the under channels of said ways and connected to said jaws by pivots disposed through said slots, and eccentric rods having threaded connection with said plates and swivel connection with eccentric straps so that the jaws may be adjusted by the rotation of said rods.
2. In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members one of which is adjustable relative to the other, each bed member being provided with outwardly diverging jaw ways disposed at right angles to each other and comprising channels in the upper and under sides of said bed members, there being slots longitudinally of said channels, actuating members provided with double racks, ways for said actuating members disposed longitudinally of said bed members and centrally between their said jaw ways, a connecting rod for said actuating members having a swivel connection with one and a threaded connection with the other, means for detachably securing said actuating members to said bed members so that the adjustable bed member may be adjusted by the rotation of said connecting rod, an actuating lever provided with a segment, one of said actuating members having a rack coacting with said segment, eccentrics n-ovided with eccentric straps and with pinions coacting with said double racks, clamping jaws disposed in the under channels of said ways and connected to said jaws by pivots disposed through said slots, and eccentric rods having threaded connection with said plates and swivel connection with eccentric straps so that the jaws may be adjusted by the rotation of said rods.
3. In a miter clamp, the combination of a frame provided with bed rails, a pair of bed members one of which is mounted on said rails for adjustment relative to the other, each bed member being provided with outwardly diverging jaw ways disposed at right angles to each other and comprising channels in the upper and under sides of said. be'd members, there being slots longitudinally of said channels, actuating members provided with double racks, ways for said actuating members disposed longitudinally of said bed members and centrally between their said jaw ways, a connecting rod for said actuating members having a swivel connection with one and a threaded connection with the other, means for detachably securing said actuating members to said bed members so that the adjustable bed member may be adjusted by the rotation of said connecting rod, means for securing said adjustable bed member in its adjusted positions on said rails, eccentrics disposed on said bed members at the sides of said actuating members and provided with eccentric straps and with pinions coacting with said double racks thereof, angled clamping jaws disposed in the upper channels of said jaw ways, pivot plates disposed in the under channels of said ways and connected to said jaws by pivots disposed through said slots,
and eccentric rods having threaded connection with said plates and swivel connection with eccentric straps so that the jaws may be adjusted by the rotation of saidrods.
4. In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members one of which is adjustable relative to the other, each bed member being provided with outwardly diverging jaw ways disposed at right angles to each other and comprising channels in the upper and under sides of said bed members, there being slots longitudinally of said channels, actuating members provided with double racks, ways for said actuating members disposed longitudinally of said bed members and centrally between their said jaw ways, a connecting rod for said actuating members having a swivel connection with one and a threaded connection with the other, means for detachably securing said actuating members to said bed members so that the adjustable bed member may be adjusted by the rotation of said. connecting rod, eccmtrics provided with eccentric straps and with pinions coacting with said double racks, clamping jaws disposed in the upper channels of said jaw ways, pivot plates disposed in the under channels of said ways and connected to said jaws by pivots disposed through said slots, and eccentric rods having threaded connection with said plates and swivel connection with eccentric straps so that the jaws may be adjusted'by the rotation of said rods.
5. In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members adjustable relative to each other, each bed member being provided with outwardly diverging jaw ways dis posed at right angles to each other and comprising channels in the upper and under sides of said bed members, there being slots longitudinally of said channels, actuating members provided with double racks, means for simultaneously actuating said actuating members, eccentrics provided with eccentric straps and with pinions coacting with said adjusting member racks, clamping jaws disposedin the upper channels of said jaw ways, pivot plates disposed in the under channels of said ways and connected to said jaws by pivots disposed through said slots, and eccentric rods having threaded connection with said plates and swivel connection with eccentric straps so that the jaws may be adjusted bythe rotation of said rods.
6. In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members provided with outwardly diverging jaw ways disposed at right angles to each other and comprising channels in the upper and under sides of said bed members, there being slots longitudinally of said channels, actuating members provided with double racks, means for simultaneously actuating said actuating members, eccentrics provided with eccentric traps and. with pinions coasting with said adjusting member racks, clamping jaws disposed in the upper channels of said jaw ways, pivot plates disposed in the under channels of said ways and connected to said jaws by pivots disposed through said slots, and eccentric rods having threaded connection with said plates and swivel connection with eccentric straps so that the jaws may be adjusted by the rotation of said rods.
7. In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members provided with outwardly diverging jaw ways disposed at right angles to each other and comprising channels in the upper and under sides of said members, there being slots longitudinally of said channels, actuating racks, clamping jaws disposed in the upper channels of said jaw ways, eccentrics provided with eccentric straps and with pinions coacting with said racks, pivot plates disposed in the under channels of said jaw ways and connected to said jaws by pivots disposed through. said slots, and eccentric rods having threaded connection with said plates, and swivel connection with said eccentric straps so that the jaws may be adjusted on the rods by rotation of the rods.
8. In a miter clamp, the combination of coacting clamping jaws, actuating racks, eccentrics provided with eccentric straps and with pinions meshing with said racks, an eccentric rod having swivel connection with said eccentric straps and threaded connection with said jaws whereby the jaws may be adjusted on the rods by rotation of the rods, and scale inclicia associated with said jaws.
9. In a miter clamp, the combination of coacting clamping jaws, actuating racks, eccentrics provided with eccentric straps and with pinions meshing with said racks, an eccentric rod having swivel connection with said eccentric straps and threaded connection with said jaws whereby the jaws may be adjusted on the rods by the rotation of the rods.
10. In a miter clamp, the combination of bed rails, a pair of bed members one of which is mounted on said rails for adjustment relative to the other, each member being provided with aw ways, actuating members mounted for longitudinal movement centrally between said jaw ways, a connecting rod for said actuating members having a swivel connection to one and a threaded connection with the other, means for detachpair of bed members one of which is adjustable relative to the other, each bed member being provided with jaw ways, actuating racks, a connecting rod for said actuating racks having a swivel connection with one and a threaded connection with the other, means for detachably securing said actuating racks to said bed members so that the adjustable table bed member may be adjusted by the rotation of said connecting rod, means for reciprocating said actuating racks, eccentrics provided with eccentric straps and with pinions coacting with said racks, clamping jaws disposed in said jaw ways, and eccentric rods having threaded connection with said jaws and swivel connections with eccentric straps so that the jaws may be adjusted by the rotation 01' said rods.
12. In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members one of which is adjustable relative to the other, each bed member being provided with jaw ways, actuating racks, a connecting rod for said actuating racks having a swivel connection with one and a threaded connection with the other, means for detachably securing said actuating racks to said bed members so that the adjustable table bed member may be adjusted by the rotation of said connecting rod, clamping jaws disposed in said jaw ways, and operating connections for said jaws to said racks.
13/In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members one of which is adjustable relative to the other, each bed member being provided with jaw ways, actuating racks, a connecting rod for said actuating racks one of said racks being adjustable on said rod, means for reciprocating said actuating racks, eccentrics provided with eccentric straps and with pinions coacting with said racks thereof, clamping jaws disposed in said jaw ways, and eccentric rods having threaded connection with said jaws and swivel connections with eccentric straps so that the jaws may be adjusted by the rotation of said rods, said bed members having scale indicia associated with said jaws.
14. In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members one of which is adj ustable relative to the other, each bed member being provided with jaw ways, actuating racks, a connecting rod for said actuating racks one of said racks being adjustable on said rod, means for reciprocating said actuating racks, clamping jaws disposed in said jaw ways, and operating connections for said rack to said jaws.
15. In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members one of which is adjustable relative to the other, each bed member being provided with outwardly diverging jaw ways disposed at right angles to each other, actuating racks, means forsimultaneously actuating said racks, means for adjusting and securing said adjustable bed member in its adjusted position, clamping jaws disposed in said ways, and eccentrics operatively connected to said jaws and racks, the connection for said jaws to said eccentrics being adjustable to permit the adjustment of the jaws to different work, said bed members having scale indicia associated with said jaws.
16. In a miter clamp, the combination of a pair of bed members one of which is adjustable relative to the other, each bed member being provided with outwardly diverging jaw ways disposed at right angles to each other, actuating racks, means for simultaneously actuating said racks, means for adjusting and securing said adjustable bed member in its adjusted position, clamping jaws disposed in said ways, and eccentrics operatively connected to said jaws and racks, the connection for said jaws to said eccentrics being adjustable to permit the adjustment of the jaws to diflerent work.
17. In a miter clamp, the combination of diverging jaw ways, actuating racks, means for simultaneously actuating said racks, clamping jaws disposed in said ways, and
eccentrics operatively connected to said jaws and racks, the connection for said jaws to said eccentrics being adjustable to permit the adjustment of the jaws to different work, said bedmembers having scale indicia associated with said jaws.
18. In a miter clamp, the combination of diverging jaw ways, actuating racks, means for simultaneously actuating said racks,
clamping jaws disposed in said ways, and eccentrics operatively connected to said jaws and racks, the connection for said jaws to said eccentrics being adjustable to permit the adjustment of the jaws to difiierent work.
19. In a miter clamp, the combination of diverging jaw ways, actuating racks, means for simultaneously actuating said racks, clamping jaws disposed in said ways, and eccentrics operatively connected to said jaws and racks.
