To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HARPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refuse-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in refuse receptacles and has for its object the provision of an improved device of this character wherein all of the usual refuse such as garbage, ashes, cleanings, etc., may be readily disposed of and taken care of.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Fig. 5, an enlarged detailed section illustrating a locking arrangement employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a body 6 made of reinforced concrete and'having a sloping front top portion 7. A garbage receptacle 8 and ash and cleanings receptacle 9 are formed in said body, the receptacles 8 and 9 being provided with top openings 10 and 11 and with rear side openings 12 and 13 respectively. The openings 10 and 12 in receptacle 8 are provided along their sides with channel side members 14 and 15 respectively and slidable closures 16 and 17 in the form of sheet metal plates are slidably mounted in said slides to close the respective openings. Bowed leaf springs 18 are secured at one of their ends in the channels 14: and 15 with their bowed portions contacting with the corresponding edges of the closures 16 and 17 thus efiecting a tight seal of the closures. Closure 16 is provided with an operating handle 19 and a depending stiffening and sealing flange 20 contacting with the front of the body 6 and with a stop 21 adapted to contact with the front wall of receptacle 8 and prevent removal of said with the topof the body 6 and a stop 24: adapted to contact with the inner side of the top wall of said body 6 to prevent removal. The bottom 25 of receptacle 8 is situated somewhat below the bottom of opening 12 and an inclined surface 25 leads from said bottom to said opening, such arrangement tending to prevent the escape of water or moisture from receptacle 8 and facilitating the insertion of a shovel therein.
An upwardly swinging foraminated closure 26 is pivoted at 27 in opening 11 and is provided with laterally projecting pins 28 fitting in recesses 29 formed in the top wall 7 adjacent the sides of opening 11, thus limitin the downward swing of closure 26. A non oraminated sheet metal closure 30 is pivoted at 31 for upward swinging and can ries 011 either side a locking stem 32 having an angularly turned lower end 33 to engage slidably under the corresponding edge of closure 26 to operatively connect closure 26 with closure 30 to cause simultaneous swinging thereof. Each of the stems 32 operate through suitable perforations in the closure 30 between strips 34 and is provided with a L transverse pin 35 fitting within the slot between said strips, said pin serving to lock the parts together against accidental disengagement as will be readily understood. To disengage the closures 26 and 30 all that is necessary is to elevate the stems 32 slightly and turn through an angle of 90 degrees whereby the angularly turned end will be thrown out of engagement with closure 26. Closure 30 is provided with an operating handle 36 to facilitate manipulations thereof. An inner swinging foraminated door 37 is arranged to close the opening 13, said door being hinged at 38 for horizontal swinging and equipped with a latch 39 cooperating with latch members 39 on the body 6 to lock door 37 in closed position. A non-foraminated sheet metal door l0 is hinged at 4:1 to the door 37 in position to close the foraminations therein and is provided with a latch 42 cooperating with latch members -12 on door 37 to lock said door .40 in closed position. The receptacle 9 is provided in its upper front side with an opening 43 normally closed by swinging door 4.4: and guides 45 are secured to the side walls of sand receptacle in position to serve as supports for an ash sifter 46 insertible and withdrawable through opening 33. By this arrangement receptacle 9 serves admirably as an ash receptacle permitting insertion of ashes therein through opening 11 and withdrawal thereof through opening 13. The ashes inserted fall directly on sifter 46 which may be readily manipulated through door 44 and the coke or partially burned coals withdrawn. WVhen desired the doors 30 and may be opened independently of the doors 26 and 37 and the ash sifter removed, in which case the receptacle 9 serves as an admil-able combustion; chamber for burning cleanings, sweepings or other debris without permitting escape of sparks, the opening of doors 30 and 4:0 permitting of ample draft for such combustion. After the combustion the doors 30 and &0 may be closed thus preventing escape of the ashes formed.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1
1. A refuse receptacle having openings in the top and a side thereof; and two closures for each of said openings, one closure for each opening being foraminated and the other non-foraminated, substantially as described. I
2. A refuse receptacle having openings in the top and a side thereof; two closures for each of said openings, each inner closure be ing foraminated and each outer closure be ing non-foraminated; and a removable ash sifter under the top opening, substantially as described.
3. A refuse receptacle having openings in the top and a side thereof; an inner foraminatd upwardly swinging closure for the top opening; an upwardly swinging non-foraminated closure covering said inner closure; a detachable connectionbetween said closures effecting simultaneous swinging thereof; and a closure for said side opening, substantially as described.
. 4. A refuse receptacle having openings in the top and a side thereof; an inner foraminated upwardly swinging closure for the top opening; an upwardly swinging nonforaminated closure covering said inner closure; a detachable connection between said closures elfecting simultaneous swinging thereof; an inner foraminated horizontally swinging door for said side opening hinged to said receptacle; a latch for securing said door in closed position; an outer horizontally swinging non-foraminated door hinged to said inner door and arranged to close the foraminations therein; and a latch for se curing said non-foraininated door closed, substantially as described.
5. A refuse receptacle having an opening therein; an inner foraminated swinging closure for said opening; a swinging non foraminate'd'closure covering said inner closure; and a detachable connection between said closures effecting simultaneous swinging thereof, substantially as described.
6. A refuse receptacle having an opening therein; an inner foraniinated swinging closure for said opening, hinged to said receptacle; a latch for securing said closure in closed position; an outer swinging nonforaminated closure hinged to said inner closure and arranged to close the fora1ninations' therein; and alatch on said inner closure forsecuring saidnon-foraminated closure closed, substantially as described.
