HOWARD F. IBUBIER, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGER MANU- FACTURING- COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
EDGE-FOLDJ IN G AND TAPE-GUIDING- DEVICE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1911?.
Application filed November 1, 1913. Serial No. 798,632.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IIOWAPD F. BUBIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Folding and Tape-Guiding Devices for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in edge-folding and tape-guiding devices for sewing machines and has for its object to improve and cheapen the manufacture of button and buttonhole flies for shoes, and will be understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which, Figure 1 is a view in front end elevation of one form of commercial sewing machine fitted with the present invention. Fig. 2 a plan of the edge-folding and tape-guiding device, together with the needle-plate and a portion of the back side-plate, Figs. 3 and 4, details in perspective, of the tape-guide and edgefolder, respectively, and Fig. a portion of a shoe-fly as effected by the present invention.
Referring to the figures, 1 represents the front end portion of a sewing machine bedplate, 2 the front end portion or head of a sewing machine bracket-arm, 3 the arm faceplate, 4 the needle-thread take-up, 5 threadtension, 6 loop-taker, 7 needle, 8 needle-carrying bar, 9 feeding foot carrying bar, 10 feeding foot, 11 presser-foot bar, 12 resserfoot, 13 needle-plate and 14 back sli e-plate, all of which are common to sewing machines of the present class and are herein shown as comprising one form of construction to which the present invention is applicable.
Referring now to the parts more directly connected with the invention, 15 represents the tape-guide comprising the base-plate 16 provided with slots 17 and 18, said base-plate being adjustably secured to the slide-plate 14 by screw 19 passing through the slot 17 and threaded into said slide-plate, and 20 represents a tape-leader adjustably secured to an upturned portion 21 of said base-plate by screw 22 passing through the slot 18 and threaded into the thickened portion 23 of said tape-leader.
24 represents an edge-folder comprising the base-plate 25 provided with a slot 26 and scroll-guide 27, said base-plate being adjustably secured to the slide-plate by screw 28 passing through the slot 26 and threaded into said slide-plate, 28 represents a folding scroll adjustably secured to said base-plate by screw 29 passing through the slot 30 and threaded into said base-plate, the pin 31 acting to hold said folding scroll against turning on the screw 29.
To effect the product represented by Fig. 5, the operator first adjusts the folding scroll 28 to the desired width of fold, as 32, followed by an adjustment of the edge-folder 2% to guide the folded edge so that the line of stitching 33 will be arranged back from said folded edge distance sufficient to later permit of the seam 34: (the seam 34 comprises a separate operation for securing the lining 35) when the leather or fabric 36 is adjusted to stitching position.
To apply the stay tape 36 it is passed from the supply through the tension guide 37, guide-bracket 38, tape-leader 20 and under the needle 7, when the tape-leader is adjusted to meet the requirements of the width of the tape, followed by an adjustment of the tape-guide 15 to guide the edge of the tape back from the folded edge of the fabric or leather a distance suficient to insure that the tape will be entirely covered by the lining 35, secured by a separate operation.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is In an edge-folding and tape-guiding device for sewing machines for the manufac ture of shoe-buttonand buttonhole-fiies comprising an outer ply of material and an inner lying tape, in combination, an edge folder adjustable with respect to the stitchforming mechanism, a tape-guide adjustable with respect to said edge-folder, the latter being positioned relatively to said tape- In testimony whereof, I have signed my guide to fold the edge of the material in advance of the taping operation With its folded edge spaced from the stitched edge of said tape a distance suflicient to conceal the latter when the lining material, common to the manufacture of the present product, is applied.
