FRlNGlN G ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters To all whom it may concern:
Be it knowuthat I, WILLIAM A. ESTAVER of Cambridge, in thecounty ofMiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Im provement in Sewing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention has for its object theproduction of a sewing-machine attachment for the manufacture of fringe.
1 have herein shown my invention applied to a Willcox & Gibbs sewing-machine; but it may be applied with but slight modification to other well-known sewing-machines. j
In this my invention, wherever a fringe is to be formed upon the cloth or other material from a thread of wool, silk, or cotton,I employ in front of the presser-foot a vibrating threadguide, which,in its movements at rightangles, or thereabout, to the direction of thefeed movement of the material, has the fringingthread carried byitcanght bya fringing-hook, which hookholds the fringing-thread and carries it under the presser while the thread-carrier .is moved past the opposite side of the presser, and on reaching its farthest outward position a heading-finger engages the fripging-thread near the thread-guide and carriesit forward under the prcsser, so that the needle in its nextdescent will cross the needle-thread over and stitch the fringingthread down upon the material. The head of the fringe islaid by the heading-finger. The heading-finger and the adjustable fringing-hook are herein shown as carried by the same shaft.
I am aware thatfringe has been formed upon fabrics on a sewing-n1achine,but not by mechanism constructed as herein shown.
Figure 1 represents in front elevation a sewing-machine having my fringing attachmentapplied to it; Fig. 2, a front view thereof; Fig.3, a front elevation of partof the machine with the threadguide and itsco-operating devices in a different position 5 Fig. 4, a sectional detail on the dotted line or, Fig.3. Fig.5 represents fringe such as made by my attachment; and Fig. 6, a sectional detail on the line 3 3 Fig. 3.
The drawings represent aregular Willcox & Gibbs sewing-machine,a being the needle-bar; a, the vibrating arm to reciprocate the needlebar and its attached eye pointed needle; aflthe Patent No. 251,852, dated January 3, 1882.
Application filed November 19, 1881. (No model.)
usual hook-shaft; a ,the hook c ,th-e usual fourmotioned under-feeding device; a the usual presser-foot bar, and a the work or cloth support.
The frame b of the fringing attachment, adjustably connected with the work-support by a thumb-screw, c, has bearings which receive the rocker-shaft I), provided at one end with the arm b slotted, as shownin Fig. 6, to permit the connection with it at a point more or less distant from the shaft b of the link d, which embraces the eccentric d on hook-shaft a the connectioubetween the said link "and 'arm I) being made bya thumb nut and screw, 0 0 When the upper end of the link is connected with the arm I; nearest the shaft 1) the eccentric d gives to the rock-shaft its greatest movement to lengthen the fringe. The rockshaft bhas fixed to its front end the headingfinger e, and outside one of the bearings of the frame I) the said rock-shafthas adjustablyconnected with it by the screw2 the fringing-hook f, having a hooked point, J. The fringinghook may be adjusted to place its point more or less back of the heading-hook, to thus determine the length of the loops of the fringe g to be formed on the cloth or other material, It, as in Fig.5.
The thread-carrier is composed of a lever, 13, pivoted at F, slotted at i to receive a stud or roller, 11 ,011 the vibrating arm a, by which to vibrate the said thread-carrier, and of adelivcry-piece, t detachably connected with the main part of the thread-carrier by a screwffi.
The thread to be used for the fringe y will be led through the eye 4 in the spring take-up k, and thence into and through the eye 5 of the delivery-piece t and then to the cloth or material h. The presser-foot Z is extended at'jits inner side toward the fringing-hook, to bear on and prevent the loops of fringe from rising or curling up in the way of the needle. the thread-guide is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the fringing-hook comes into its most When i forward position toward the operator, and as 10, draws one part, 12, thereof ful-ly underthe presser-foot, and the other part, 14, but partially under thepresser-foot. J nst before the thread-guide reaches its farthest position to the left, as in Fig. 1, and the hook f its farthest position to the rear, the heading-finger e engages the fringing-thread near the thread-guide and is moved backward from the operator, carrying the portion 14 of the loop of fringe being formed back under the presserfoot, holding the said portion near the outer side of the presser-foot and stretched under the presserfoot between the said finger and the hook f,thus measuring off and holdingthe thread in a loop of thedesired length, while the regular needle of the needlebar a, properly supplied with thread, descends and crosses its thread over both portions 12 14 of the loop, making a stitch, l3, and making the head of the fringe g on the material h.
Thisinexpensiveand simple attachment may be quickly and easily applied to a sewing-1nachine, and be made to produce a fringe of greater or less length.
I claim 1. The thread-guide 1", combined with the fringing-hook f and heading-finger, to carry the fringing-thread backward under the presser-foot to be stitched in place, substantially as described.
2. The rocker-shaft, its arm, and link d, adjustably attached to it, and the fringing-hook and heading-finger carried by the said rockshaft, combined with the thread-guide, the needle, needlebar, and presser-foot, under which the fringing-thread is drawn, substantially as described.
3. Therock-shaft b, bearings forit, and means to rock it, combined with the heading-finger and fringing-hook carried by the said rockshaft, and made adjustable thereon relatively each to the other, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. ESTAVER.
