OIL-WELL-DRILLING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES V. THoMr-soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spencer, in the county of Keane and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-\Vell- Drilling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to well-drilling machinery, and more particularly to rockingarm impact-rigs having means for lifting the tool and releasing it quickly, so that it will strike the bottom of the boring un controlled by the lifting mechanisn'l, the impact being due to gravitation.
One of the objects is to provide a construction of the type indicated which will be simple in design andthoroughly eliicient in operation.
Another object is to provide a rocking arm impact-rig which may be positioned on the well-known fixed crank now in use, thus dispensing with the trouble and expense of making a new disk or crank.
Another object is to provide a rockingarm impact-rig which will obviate certain faults inherent in those now in use; that is, which is designed to overcome the most serious handicap in dropping a drilling-appliance with the rigs now in use,; namely,
the slap or sudden jerk or blow which in-.
evitably occurs in devices of this character now in use when the tripping-pin strikes the movable crank. This objectionable feature I overcome by a construction wherein the entire mechanism moves around together, bringing about a gradual and almost shockless engagement between the tripping pin and the movable crank. The construction is such that, in case the tools do not strike bottom, when the drop occurs, the drop has taken place at such a time that the gas-engine used to drive the fixed crank receives the weight or impulse of the tools in a way to accelerate its speed by absorbing the shock, thus lessening the danger of breaking any of the members of the drilling-outfit.
Other objects will appear as the specification proceeds and the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed.

Referring, now, in detail to the drawing:
1 designates the usual form of walking beam, which is well known in oil-well drilling machinery, and 2 the main operating Or driving shaft driven from any suitable source of power, such as a gas engine.
A crank 3 is fixed, toward one end thereof and centrally of its width, to the shaft 2, and, at the other end, is pivotally connected, as at 2, with one end of a movable crank at.
The fixed crank 3 is provided, intermediate its ends, and at points near the longitudinal edges thereof, with two openings 5, 5, through either of which may be passed a pin 6 projecting from the crank 3 at both ends, the end of the pin being screw-threaded, as shown at 7, on which is screwed a nut 8, whereby the pin may be removed, when desired.
The movable crank a is provided, toward the end thereof opposite the pivotal end 2, with a plurality of longitudinally-extending holes 8. The movable crank is also preferably provided, on one face, with a longitudinally-extending groove, recess or pocket 9 extending from the end opposite the pivotal end 2. The holes 8 register with said pocket 9, so that the projecting, threaded end of a wrist-pin 10 passing through one of said openings 8 enters said pocket and is screwed into a nut 11 resting in said pocket, so as not to project above the surface of said crank 4. The nut engages the walls of the pocket 9, so that unscrewing or loosening thereof is prevented.
Pivoted on said wrist-pin 10 is one end of a link 12, pivoted at the other end to one end of the walking beam 1.
It will be seen that, by reason of the relative position of the several parts, the fixed rank 3 and the movable crank 4 revolve in the same direction at almost the same rate of speed, and that, due to the particular position of the tripping pin 6, the impact between the two cranks, when the trip 6 engages the movable crank at, is very gentle. With devices in customary use, there is, due to the arrangement of their parts, a harsh impact or blow in the operation of the rig when the tripping pin strikes the movable crank; but the device of my invention obviates this customary fault.
It will be seen, also, that my invention comprehends means for adjusting, i. 0., changing the length of, the drop of the walking-beam and, consequently, of the impact-tool. at the end of the cable carried at the end of the walking-beam; and that such adjustment is accomplished by providing the movable crank 4 with the longitudinallyarranged series of holes 8. By changing the position of the wrist-pin from one opening 8 to another, the length of drop is altered. This is an important advantage in my construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a rocking-arm impact-rig for oilwell drilling apparatus, a driving-shaft, a crank fixed near one end and centrally of the width thereof to said shaft and provided, intermediate its ends, near the longitudinal edges of said crank, with openings, a removable tripping-pin projecting through one of said openings, said crank being pivotally connected, at the other end thereof, with one end of a movable crank, said movable crank being provided with a plurality of longitudinally-extending holes extending from the end thereof opposite the pivotal end, a wrist-pin passing through one of said openings in the movable crank, and a link pivoted on said wrist-pin.
2. In a rockingarm impact-rig for oilwell drilling apparatus, a driving-shaft, a
, crank fixed near one end and centrally of the width thereof to said shaft and provided, intermediate its ends, near the longitudinal edges of said crank, with openings, a removable tripping-pin projecting through one of said openings, said crank being pivotally connected, at the other end thereof, with one end of a movable crank, said movable crank being provided, in one face, with a longitudinally-extending pocket and with a plurality of longitudinally-extending holes registering with said pocket and extending from the end of the movable crank opposite the pivotal end thereof, a wrist-pin passing through one of said openings in the movable crank and provided with a threaded end, a nut screwed on said threaded end and resting in said pocket, and a link pivoted on said wrist-pin.
3. In a rocking-arm impact-rig for oilwell drilling apparatus, a driving shaft, a crank fixed near one end thereof to said shaft and provided with a movably-positioned trip-pin, a movable crank pivotally connected at one end thereof with the otherwise free end of said fixed crank, and a link pivotally connected to the movable crank and to the walking-beam, said .movable crank being provided with means, cooperating with said link, for changing the length of drop of said walking-beam.
