T0 all whom it ma concern Be it known t at I, TITUs A..BEEGHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resi-` dent of Taft, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Rotary Well- Bits, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for well drills, and particularly to a safety device designed to recover lost rotary bits, and has .for an object to provide an improved structure which will not only hold the lost or broken oil portion so that the same may be withdrawn, but wil] cause an indication at the surface showing that the bit is broken or lost.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a controlling valve for shutting off the flow of water from when a bit is broken oil" and thereb indicate what has occurred at the bottom o the well.
In carryin out the objects of the invention, a iieXib e cable is connected to the bit and to a movably or adjustably secured member associated with the valve which shuts the water ott' from a circulating pump. This construction permits the bit when broken off to hold the lower end of the cable stationary while the upper end connected with the valve is rotated, and by such twisting action to shorten the cable, resulting in a downward and closing movement of the valve. This will indicate to the operator that the bit has broken oiv so that he may take proper steps to remove the broken drill and substitute a new one.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a art of this specification, in which similar ciiaracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

the circulating pump v lower end of the tubing 2, is a bit 3 having a cutting portion 4 and a retaining threaded conical-shaped portion 5 fitting into a threaded conical-shaped opening in a member 6 rigidly secured to the tubing 2. The blt 3 is provided with a pair of openings 7 through which the water may circulate when the device is operating properly. The bit 3 is provided with an aperture 8 arranged centrally thereof, having an enlargement 9 at the end so that when the Babbltt metal 10 is placed in position around the cable 11, the same will be interlocked or wedged The Babbitt metal is preferably me ted, and while in a molten state, is poured in place. The cable 11 has secured at its upper end a connecting member 12 which is secured to the connecting member 13 by being threaded therein. It will be evident that the members 12 and 13 could be coupled together in any other desired way which would positively hold the same in engagement during the rotation of the device, and especially during the rotation of the device after the bit 3 had broken od. Connected to the member 13 is a cable 14 extending upwardly and into a socket 15 in the end of a squared reciprocating shaft 16, where it is secured by Babbitt metal which is preferably placed in position as above indicated while in a molten state, whereby the cable is rigidly clamped or braced in position. The shaft 16 is preferably formed square and loosely fits in the s uared portion 17 of the valve- 18,- Whereby t e valve may be adjusted back and forth freely. The upper end of the shaft 16 is threaded at 19 and accommodates nuts 2O which are designed to regulate the position of the valve 18. If for any cause whatever the bit 3 should break off the same will remain stationary while the tube or pipe 2 will contimle to rotate. This will cause atwisting or winding of the cables 11 and 14 substantially as shown `in Fig. 4, which will naturally shorten the same and cause a downward movement of the valve 18 until the same enters the passageway 21, whereupon the water will be shut off from the circulating pump. This will be a notification to the operator that the bit has broken off and is remaining stationary. In constructing the valve 18, the same is formed with rojections 23 and 24 slidingly fitted into slbts 25 and 26, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2, so that the valve is given/a free up and down movement and not a rotary i whereby whenever said bit is flowing through the movement, so that when the cables 11 and 11i twist the same cannot turn the valve.
The upper end of the tube or casing 2 may be arranged in any desired manner, and also have any desired driving and lifting means associated therewith, the construction o the means for rotating the casing, and the means for raising and lowering the same not forming anv part of the invention.
The invention consists in means for, indieating that the bit has broken oi, the same inclilding a valve 18, part of a bit 3, and the'bables and other connecting mechanism between the bit and the valve.
Having thus described my invention, l claim, as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: v
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a well casing including a bit, of a water controlling valve, and a exible member connecting said valve with said bit adapted to be shortened by twisting, broken 0H, a longitudinal movement will be given said valve for closing the same.
2. ln a device of the characterdescribed, the combination with a well casing provided with a valve, of a iiexible cable connected at one end to said valve land at the otherend to said bit soas to rotate with-the casing and associated devices when the bit is in proper operation, said cable being adapted to be twlsted and thereby shortened when said bit is broken from the casing and the casing is given a continued rotary movement, the shortenindgofsaid cable causing the closing of sai valve will be cut oil'.

5. ln a device of the character described, the combination with a rotary casing provided with a bit, of a HeXible member connected with said bit and adapted to be shortened by twisting, and means connected with and actuated by the iiexible member for indicating that the casing is moving independently of the bit.
6. ln a device of the character described, the combination with a rotary casing having a bit at the 'lower end, ofa contractible member connected with said bit and a reciprocating valve arranged at any desired point in the casing secured to the u per end of said contractible member where y when said bit is broken od said contractible memberwill-be operated upon the continuous rotation of the casing and valve independent of the bit, whereby a downward pull on the valve will be caused for closing the same.
