Be it known that we, EDUARDO MURPHY, a subject of the King` of Great Britain, and AMRico ANzULovicH, a citizen of the Argentine Republic, residing at No. 1960 San Eduardo street, Buenos Aires, Argentine Republic,`have invented certain new and useful Improve-ments in Boring-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a boring device and has for its object the construction of an apparatus adapted to operate in a perfect and automatic manner.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and employed without difficulty, an embodiment of this boring device is shown, by way of example, in the illustrative drawings attached wherein Figure 1 is a central section of the drill, showing the principal parts of the same.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the upper partof the device, illustrating a different position of the locking knives.
Fig. 3 is al horizontal section on the line 3 of Fig. 1.

The boi'er in accordance with this invention, consists of a cylindrical tube or barrel 1, open at its lower' end and having a closed,
' hemisplieiical top, provided with a cap or plug 5, adapted to rotate with respect to thebarrel 1. The entire borer is suspended from a crane or from some other suitable point,` as will be explained later on, by means ofva rope 2., fixed outside of the borer to a rod 4 which passes through the plug 5 to which it is firmly fixed by means of a pin. or other suitable fastening. The rod 4 is provided at its lower' end with a stirrup G which supports a ball bearing 7, arranged below the head 8 of another rod 9. The descending movement of the rod 4 within the barrel 1 is limited by a horizontal division ,means of screws at 22 (see Fig. 5).

The lower end of the rod '9 is jointed t0 two arms 11, jointed in turn to the lower en ds of two crescent shaped knives 12, ]o1nted at their upper ends to the lugs 13, affixed to the lower side of the partition 10. Said crescent shaped knives 12 are adapted to close into and7 to protrude from the barrel 1 through the side slots 14, for a purpose which will afterward be explained. On the rod 9, near the point where the same is jointed to the arms 11, is provided a projection 15, to support the lower end of a spring 1G the upper end of which touches the lower surface of the partition 10. The object of said spring is to keep the stirrup 6 under normal conditions .in touch with the upper surface of the partition 10 and as a result to hold the arms 11 in their extended position, with the knives 12 protruding out of the metallic barrel or casing.
Y Below the said knives -is arranged, inside the barrel 1-, another horizontal `partition 17 which forms the roof of the tubular chamber or casing intended to contain the driving mechanism. Another partition 18, some distance farther down inside the barrel 1, closes the chamber from below, thus preventing the entrance of moisture, earth or other foreign matter, liable to affect the operation of the borer. The wall of the barrel 1, at the section corresponding to the driving gears, is constructed with a door 20, hinged atv 21 and adapted to be closed by This door allows of access to the motor 19, mounted within the upper part of said chamber'` and supplied with electric current inthe manner to .be described'.
On the lower end of the shaft of the motor is mounted a gear wheel 23 .which engages with another gear wlieel 24, fixed to one end of an axle 25, mounted in ball bearings 26, 26. On the other end of the latter shaft is mounted the cog-wlieel 27, engag-y ing with a similar wheel 28 fixed to a shaft Q9 which holds a position corresponding to the axis of they barrel 1. This latter shaft rotates in ball bearings 30 and is held in position at its free end by a socket with ball bearings 31, mounted on a horizontal partition. On the partition 18 is also mounted a packing gland 33 which surrounds the shaft. 29 and prevents the passage of moisture and earth.
Although a specific system of driving gear has been described, it will be evident that as the only purpose of the gears is to reduce the speed of the motor to a degree suitable for the drill, any other convenient means of driving Imay be employed for the same purpose. Y
Below the partition 18 and in consequence outside the chamber containing the motor and the driving gears, the shaft ends with a boring chuck 32 or other suitable similar device by means of which the cylindrical drill 35 or the likel may be fixed in posi tion. The borer or drill is formed by a voke .t3-l to which is secured a hollow7 cylindrical body provided at its lower end with the usual teeth 3G and 37, the teeth 37 being connected by a bridge 38 provided at a point cm'responding to the axis of the barrel 1. with a pin or point 3S) which guides the device in its operation and supplies a support for the boring tool.
The portion of the barrel 1 occupied by the drill, is provided with a door 5l, adapt ed to be locked in position by means of screws as at in this case, hinges cannot be used on account of the boring tool rotating in close proximity to the inner wall ot the barrel.
Electric current is supplied to the motor 1i) t'rom any suitable source, not shown in the drawings. by means of a lead 3. ending in a metallic conducting disk 49, separated from the plug by means of an insulating washer tti. Said disk JA) is constantly in contact with a contact piece 50 from which the current is led to one of the terminals ol an interrupting switch l? in the interior ot' the motor casing. The other terminal of said switch is connected to the motor. Electric contact is established normally in the switch.
In the interior of the drill is arranged a horizontal disk lr() supported by a rod l1 inserted in the shaft ot the yoke 3l of the drill or borer. Between the neck ot' said yoke and the top of the disk 40 is arranged a spring 42 the effect of which is to maintain said disk in its lowermost position. The rod l1 is provided with a lateral stud, adapted to slide within yan elongated aperture in the shaft of the yoke piece 3l and supporting a metallic disk 43; this latter rotates with the boringr tool 35 and in turn is held fast between two stops lat. afiixed to the lower end ot" a rod 45, this latter being movably connected by means of a pivoted link 4e, to the switch t?. lltlhen for any reason as for instance. when the boring tool 35 has become filled with earth` the disk el() rises, it will cause the disk lf3 to rise also, and in consequence, the rod 45 and link lli will break the contact in the switch, whereupon the motor is left without current and stops operating.
Having now substantially described the main parts of the apparatus in accordance with this invention. we shall proceed to ex-v plain the method ot operation.
The borer is suspended from a crane. not relnesentechby means of a rope 2 which, as also the electric lead, is arranged to wind up when the boring tool is hoisted. Vvlhen the boring device is suspended by the rope the knives l2, by the action of the connecting arms 11 and the special suspension device, will close into the barrel 1, by the slots 14, and take the position shown in Fig. :2.
After boring has been initiated, as soon as the point 39 of the rotary boringtool 35 rests on the bottom ot' the bore hole. the drill will no longer exert anystrain on the rope 2 and the knives 1Q, under the pressure of the spring 16, will open outward as indicated in Fig. 1, and sink into the earth on the sides o1" the bore hole thereby preventing any rotary n'iovement ot' the barrel 1 with respect to said here hole.
The boring tool is thus placed in position ready for operation. By means ot' a switch, (not shown) the motor 19 is then started and through the gears 23`2t. shat't Q5 and cog-wheels QG and QT, the shaft 29 which is fixed to the drill 35, is caused to rotate. The drill, as it continues boring, will become filled with earth or sludge. to the level of the disk 40, whereupon the current is cut off from the motor, in the manner heretofore explained. By means of the crane which operates the rope 2. the borer is then extracted; as soon as the boring tool is litt ed the knives 12 will again close into the barrel l, contrary to the action of the spring 16, as will be clearly understood on inspecting the drawings.
The stopping of the motor may be noted by the attendant by means of an amperemeter or any other suitable known device.
After the boring device, has been hoisted, the door 51 is opened and the earth contained in the boring tool is discharged. The door 51 is then closed again, the crane is put in operation and the borer is lowered into the bore hole.. lhen it comes to rest on the bottom of the same, the knives 12 will open out and the motor commence to work and this series of opera tions will be repeated until boring has been completed.
In order to avoid any twisting of the cable Q and the electric lead 3, the former is provided with a ball bearing connection, while the latter is affixed to and in electric contact with a conducting disk 49, adapted to rotate independently of the barrel 1, and in constant electric contact with the contact piece 50, in the manner heretofore explained.
The arrangement of the -interrupting switch 47 and its accessory parts and connections is intended to prevent the boring tool 35 from continuing to rotate after it has become filled with earth, as otherwise serious damage might be caused both to the tool and to the motor 19.
The boring tool 35 is soconstructed as to permit of its being dismounted and replaced by a bit when this is necessitated by the stony nature of the soil to be bored, it being well known that cylindrical drills can only be used lwhen working in soft earth or gravel, and that a bit must be used for boring stone or very hard limestone.
A rotary file might also be secured to the shaft 29 for the purpose of widening the bore hole when this is desired as for instance, for the insertion of pipes.
The part'of the apparatus corresponding to the motor, is inclosed as before stated, within a chamber or casing formed by the Walls of the barrel 1 and the partitions 17 and 18, so as to entirely exclude the entrance of sludge or water which might affect the perfect operation of the motor. For repair- Y ing or inspecting the motor, a door 20 has been provided, and this door can be tightly closed by using 1a packing of asbestos or other suitable material. The driving gears might also be inclosed, if so desired, in an oil casing or be provided with other suitable lubricating means.
Various changes in detail of construction and arrangement will readily occur to those skilled in the art which do not depart from what we claim'as our invention` We declare that what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A boring device, com rising in combination: a cylindrical barre or tube, open at its lower end, an electric motor contained in said barrel, electric connections from without to said motor, a cylindrical drill or bit, arranged inside the lower part of the barrel, with its lower end slightly protruding beyond the same, means for driving said tool from the motor, means for interrupting the operation of the motor when the cylindrical borin\g tool becomes filled with earth, and crescent shaped knives arranged to protrude through the walls of the .barrel when the boring tool comes to rest on the bottom of the borehole and which automaticallywithdraw within said barrelwhen the borin tool is suspended, substantially as describe and for the purpose set forth.
2. Aln a boring device of the construction recited in claim 1,.do'ors in said outer barrel knives, dest-ined to lock the device against rotation, with respect to the walls of the bore hole', said lmives being pivoted at one end to a`iixed part of the apparatus, and a rod jointed to the other end thereof and adapted to slide in a verticalidirection, a spring which tends to maintain the knives normally intheir operative or open position, the rod being so arrangedas to draw the knives in, or render them inoperative, contrary to the action of the spring, on traction being applied lthereto by the means which bring about the suspension of the borer, substantiallyas described and for thf, purpose set forth.
4. In a boring device of the construction recited in 'claim 1, a plug freely swivelingin the head of the casing and centrally pierced to permit the passage of a suspension mem- 'ber therethrough, a contact ring mounted on the inner face of said plug, a cable passing through said plug and electrically connected to the contact ring thereon, a brush contact mounted on the inner face of'said casing and bearing on said terminal ring, and electrical connection from said brush to the motor.
5. In a boring device of the character described, a casing, a boring tool at the lower end thereof, a motor within the casing, a driving connection between said motor and boring tool, an electric switch in the motor circuit, and means associated with said boring tool for opening the switch when a predetermined amount of work has been done by the tool.
6. In a boring device of the type described, a casing, a motor within the casing,
a chambered boring tool driven by the motor, an electric contact device within the casing, and means associated with the boring tool lfor operating said contact device when the chamber of the boring tool is substantially filled with material.
7 In a boring device ofthe type described, a casing, a contact device therein, a chamberedboring tool within said casing, and means associated with said tool for operating said contact device when the chamber of said boring tool is substantially filled with material.
