APPARATUS FOR CLEANING OIL-WELLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 11, 1911.
Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
Serial No. 620,449.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MARK W. MARSDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Cleaning Oil-Wells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for cleaning oil and other deep wells.
One of the principal objects is to provide simple and efficient means for cutting up or disintegrating sand and other deposits.
Another object is to provide for bailing or removing the loose chips and sand produced by the action of the drill or the savings of the walls of the well.
Another object is to provide a sand bailer with means adapted and arranged to exert a hammer action thereon.
Another object is to provide a simple and eflicient sand bailer having a shifting or vibrating bail or bail rod.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the matters hereinafter described and defined in the subjoined claim.
A simple embodiment of the invention is ilustrated in the annexed drawing, where- O Figure 1, is a sectional view of a well showing the general arrangement of the bailer. Fig. 2, is a sectional view of the bailer. Fig. 3, is a section on line 3 -3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4:, is a sectional view of the bailer with the bail dropped.
Referring to the drawing, the tube or bailer 5, is provided at its lower end with a detachable ring 6, which constitutes the valve seat for a drop valve 7. The stem of said valve terminates in a barbed member 8, the function of which is to cut up or disintegrate the sand and other deposits to be taken up by the bailer. To facilitate this action and also the loosening of the bailer, the bail or bail rod 9, is vibratorily mounted in respect to the tube or bailer 5. An exemplification of this is illustrated more particularly in Figs. 2 and A, where 10, represents guides or ways in the form of lugs arranged interior of and which may be rivet ed to the tube. The arms 11, of the bail slide up and down in said ways and this reciprocatory or vibratory movement is limited by Weights 12, which tend to hold the bail in the dropped position, Fig. L, and by stops 13, farther up on the bail, which in the dropped position of the latter rest on the rim of the bailer. It follows from this arrangement that the weights 12, and stops 13, exert a hammer action with relation to the bailer. This construction and arrange ment provides an unobstructed passage through the bailer for the discharge of water, sand, and other deposits.
The numeral 14, represents the rope or cable for manipulating the device.
Manifestly the jogging or jarring action of the bailer is conslderably augmented by the use of the described shifting or vibrating bail rod. Also, the liability of breakage is much lessened and in the event of breakage the parts are readily accessible.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Hence the same is not limited other than required by the state of the prior art.
Having described the nature and objects of the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A cleaning tube or bailer provided at its operating end with a valve and with a cutting or disintegrating device and having an unobstructed passage to its outlet, ways or guides in the outlet end of the tube, and a sliding bail or yoke having arms adapted to said guides, said arms equipped with hammers and weights arranged respectively above and below the guides, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARK W. MAR-SDEN.
