THOMAS ERNEST LEIGH, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, HSSIGNOR TO ANGLO-AMERICAN TEXTILE MACHINERY COMPANY, OF ABINGTON, WIASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
LAPPE'I AND THREAD-GUIDE FOR SPINNING AND LIKE MACHINES.
Application filed May 17, 1913.
To all NJ/LOHZ it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ERNEST Linen, of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lappets and TllI'GzlChGlliClGS for Spinning and Like Machines, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to lappets and thread guides for spinning and like machines, the chief object being to provide improved means for adjustably securing the shank of the thread guide in position relatively to the lappet.
According to this invention the lappet is formed with an opening in its front portion and a longitudinal slot to the rear thereof; the shank of the thread guide is passed through the opening in the usual way, itor a detachable extension thereof is bent transversely to the main portion thereof and is adjustably secured by means cooperating with both the longitudinal slot and with the rear end of the thread guide, or with a bushing or other suitable exten- 51011.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan, partly in section, of one construction of lappet and thread guide according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan, partly in section, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 4 is a section plan of a modified construction.
Referring first more particularly to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3,A is the lappet, B the thread guide, and G the hinge whereby the lappet is secured to the lappet board in the usual way.
The lappet shown is of the box-like form. The shank of the thread guide passes through the usual hole a in the front por tion of the lappet, and the side of the lappet is formed with a longitudinal slot at adapted to receive a screw 6. The shank b is bent approximately at right angles as at b and its rear end is screw threaded and engages with one end of an internally tapped bush B the other end of which is engaged by the screw Z).
In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the shank B is bent three times at 6 6 6 and its rear end is reduced and screw- Specificatien of Letters Patent.

threaded at at b the portion 6 extends through the slot (4 in the side of the lappet and receives a nut as shown, the shoulder or abutment of the thicker portion of the thread guide being thus drawn tightly against the inner face of the lappet wall, or, as shown, against a washer interposed between the said shoulder and the said inner face. In this construction the three bends 6 are necessary with the box-like form of lappet in order to enable the shank to be inserted through the ordinary small hole a in the front of the lappet.
It will be obvious that various modifications may be made: For example, the longitudinal slot (0 may be formed in the upper or in the lower wall of the lappet, which may be formed with a cavity or recess adacent thereto, and the rear or bent portion of the shank arranged to lie in a vertical plane; further the invention need not necessarily be applied to lappets of box-like formit may be applied to lappets consisting of flanged plates in which case when the bushing B is dispensed with (as in the construction shown in Fig. l) the shank does not require to be bent as at 79 5 5 since the shank can be easily passed through the hole a by turning it until its rear end is clear of any depending flanges.
In all of the constructions described above the position of the thread guide may be adjusted longitudinally by varying the position of the screw Z) or the shank end 6 in the slot at in the lappet wall, the lateral adjustment being efiected by means of the hinge C as is well understood.
What I claim is 1. In a lappet and thread guide for spinning machines and the like, the combination with a lappet of box-like form, of a thread guide having a shank passed through the front wall of the lappet, said shank having an inner offset portion extended toward one side wall of the lappet, and means for attaching the offset portion to said side wall.
2. In a lappet and thread guide for spinning machines and the like, the combination with a lappet of box-like form having a slot in one side wall, of a thread guide having a shank passed through the front wall of the lappet, said shank having aninner offset portion extended toward the slotted side wall, and means for adjustably attaching the ofiset portion of said shank to the slotted portion of said side wall.
3. In a lappet and thread guide for spinning machines and the like, the combination with a lappet of box-like form, of a thread guide having a shank passed through the front wall of the lappet, said shank having an inner offset portion extended toward one side wall of the lappet, and a bushing attached to said side wall, the offset portion of said shank being engaged with one end of said bushing.
l. In a lappet and thread guide for spinning and like machines the combination with a lappct of box-like formation and having an opening in its front portion and a longitudinal slot to the rear thereof of a thread guide adapted to pass through the said opening and having its rear end bent transversely of its main portion, an extension of the said shank the said extension comprising a bush- I ing screwed on to the rear end of the shank and to extend transversely trom the main portion of the shank to one side of the lappet, and a screw adapted to pass through the longitudinal slot in the rear portion of the lappet and to engage with and to clamp the said bushing and thread guide to the lappet.
5. In a thread guide, a lappet having an opening in its front end and a longitudinal slot in its rear portion, a thread guide having its shank passing through said opening, the rear end of said shank extending transversely of said lappet and provided with a threaded end, an internally threaded sleeve to receive the threaded end of said shank adjustably mounted in said longitudinal slot, and a screw for locking said sleeve in its adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I have a'liixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS ERNEST LEIGH.
