@NEED PATENT CHARLES F. GOLDBECK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANA.
o IDENTIFICATION DEVICE.
Application filed August 8, 1918.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that l, CHARLES F. GOLD- nnoK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful identification Device, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention consists of an identification device comprising an attaching plate provided with a chamber adapted to receive an identification card or strip, and a covering piece for said chamber', whereby said card or strip is retained in place, means being provided for locking said piece with said plate so as to prevent improper separation of the latter.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanaying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the speciiic details shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of an identication device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a front elevation lof the attaching plate of the device.
Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of the covering piece of the device.
Fig. 4 represents a. horizontal section on line 4 4 Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section on line 5-5 Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 represents a face view of an identification card or strip that may be employed.
Fig. 7 represents a horizontal section of a modification.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates a plate of sheet metal or other suitable material, the same forming the body portion f the device and having therein a longitudinally-extending depression or chamber 2, and being provided with eyes 3, whereby it may be sewed or riveted to a garment of the wearer of the device.
4 designates a piece or bar of sheet steel or other suitable metal or material, the same having on its inner face a longitudinallyextending depression or chamber 5, said piece being -imposed on the plate 1 and connected therewith by the pivot pin 6, whereby said depressions 5 and 2 are in reg- Speeication of Letters Patent.

ister forming the enlarged chamber 7 to receive the identification card or strip S'which may be rolled or folded so as to be placed in said chamber 7, it being noticed 'that the bar 4 may be turned laterally on the pivot pin thus opening the chamberl 7, and permitting the card or strip to be placed thereinto, after which said bar may be returned to its normal position, thus closing the chamber 7 and retaining the card or strip S within the same. n order to prevent improper motion of the bar and the consequent opening of the chamber 7, l provide means for locking said bar with said plate, and vice versa. For this purpose, form in the bar the teat 9, and in the plate the socket 10, or vice versa, said socket and teat being preferably struck-up on the respective members so that one may enter the other and engage after the manner of a snap-fastening. Then as the bar 4 is resilient in its nature, it may be moved laterally by superior force applied thereto, and bent outwardly whereby the teat 9 emerges from the socket 10 or vice versa, and the chamber 7 is thereby uncovered and open and access is had to the card or slip 8 when the latter may be removed, and the identiiication matter thereon read-off.
When the card or strip is placed in the chamber 7, the latter may be covered by properly moving the bar 4 to its closing position, when the socket and teat snap together, and the card or strip is retained in said chamber, and the latter guarded against improper opening.
It will be seen also that in opening the chamber 7 the resilient covering bar is bent out and so raised clear of the socket 10. It may be turned to the right or left and so opened when it will spring backagainst the face of the plate 1 and remain there leaving the chamber 7 uncovered, whereby the card or strip may be placed in said chamber or removed therefrom without said bar swinging back on said chamber and interfering with the open condition thereof.
Then when sufficient power is applied to the bar it may be turned to the right or left when the teat 9 will ride over the socket 10 and then spring into the latter, the bar then resuming its flat condition upon the plate 1.
The sides of the bar 4 which extend from the depression 5 form flanges which will lie Hat closely against the plate 1 forming a tight joint with the latter preventing the entrance of dirt, etc., into the depression 5 and consequently into the chamber 7.
In Fig. 7 I show a depression formed only in the plate l, while the bar 4 is flat in its nature and covers said depression, this, however, reducing the size of the chamber to receive the identiiication card or strip, without producing di'erent results from those of the previous igures. A
rIhe device will be found eminently serviceable, especially in these war times, when soldiers and sailors will be provided with the same, so that in case o wounds or death the card or strip 8 having the matter shown thereon, or any other that may be advantageous, provides m-eans Jfor indicating the person who wears the device as is evident, but, of course, I do not limit the use of the device to soldiers and sailors.
I-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. An identiiication device composed of an attaching plate, a bar of resilient material which is connected pivotally with said plate, said bar and plate having between them a chamber for receiving identification matter, said bar being adapted to cover and uncover said chamber and means on said bar and plate for locking said bar in closed pov sition over said chamber, said bar being adapted to be bent out from its pivotal end thus disconnecting the locking means and turned to the right or left and to spring back flat upon said attaching plate preserving the uncovered condition of said chamber.
2. An identification device composed of an attaching plate, a bar which is connected pivotally with said plate, said bar and plate having between them a chamber for receiving identification matter, said bar being adapted to cover and uncover said chamber, and means for locking said bar and plate with each other, said bar being of resilient material and held at one end on said plate by the pivot of the plate, and having a member of said locking means on the free end of the bar, the sides of the bar extending from the side walls of said chamber forming iianges which are adapted to rest fiat on said attaching plate.
3. An identification device composed of an attaching plate, and a resilient bar which is connected pivotally with said plate, said bar and plate having between them a chamber for receiving identification matter, said bar being adapted to cover and uncover said chamber, said bar being provided on its free end with a teat, and said plate being pro-v vided with a socket with which said teat may be engaged for resiliently locking said bar with said plate, the sides of said bar forming on the sides of said chamber flanges which are adapted to rest flat on said attaching plate.
4. An identification device composed of an attaching plate having a locking member thereon, a resilient laterally movable bar pivotally connected at one end with said plate and having on its free end a locking member adapted to engage that on said attaching plate, said bar being bendable by its resiliency in and out from said pivot, said bar and plate having in the same a chamber ,tor containing the identification matter.
5. An id entiiication device composed of an attaching plate having a locking member thereon, a resilient laterally movable bar pivotally connected at one end with said plate and having on its free end a locking member adapted to engage that on said attaching plate, said bar being bendable by its resiliency in and out from said pivot, said bar and plate having in the same a chamber i'or containing the identification matter, the sides of said bar forming on the sides of said chamber flanges which are adapted to rest I'lat on said attaching plate.
6. An identification device, comprising an attaching plate and a covering bar therefor, with a chamber between the same, said covering bar being of resilient material and pivotally connected at one end with said plate to swing in a plane substantially parallel therewith, and interengaging locking means on said plate and bar beyond said chamber, said bar being adapted to be iexed during the locking and unlocking movements.
